Christmas had come and gone, and with it the war and looming threat of danger had gone, too. The world itself had seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
For Rémie, things didn't look all that different. Christmas was smaller that year, far too many of her cousins and aunts and uncles dead, abroad, or hadn't come, but it was still a joyous occasion. The empty seats cast a somber shadow over the event, but Rémie didn't let it get in the way of her enjoying the holiday.
There was one last celebration to cap off 2022—Amaya and Adora's fifteenth birthday, their quince, and their dads were throwing them some sort of grand party to celebrate.
Exactly what a quince entailed was a mystery to Rémie, but she was excited for the possibility of seeing Amaya and some of her school friends nonetheless. So far, Hogwarts' closing had felt like little more than an extended Christmas holiday, but she knew that sooner or later the reality would set in and Rémie would have to come to terms with the fact that she was not returning to the castle. The danger of Death and the war might have been passed, but it seemed the Ministry was firm in their decision to shutter Hogwarts for good.
Rémie had picked her sparkliest dress for the occasion, white sequins and a flowing skirt capped off with matching flats and a sparkly headband. Her mother had tried to get her into heels, but both she and Rémie knew it was a bad idea to try and get her to walk in them and not fall over.
Music was blasting from every direction as Rémie entered the party, or at least she assumed that it was, based on the people on the dance floor and the vibrations in the air. The decorations drew far more of Rémie's attention, bright colors everywhere, balloons and streamers and lights dancing in her vision. It was beautiful.
It didn't take long for Rémie to find her friends, a handful of her schoolmates who Amaya had invited. The high-pitched squeals of excitement shared among the girls was probably enough to drown out the music, hugs and excited signing passed among them. The birthday girls, the quinces themselves, had not yet made an appearance, but for the time being Rémie was more than happy to catch up with her friends.
Rémie missed the announcement of Amaya and Adora's arrival, for obvious reasons, but followed the crowd's gaze to see the twins step onto the scene. Rémie found herself staring; she couldn't help herself. Amaya was absolutely stunning, from the dress she wore to the smile that graced her lips.
Thankfully, Rémie was able to snap out of it before Amaya caught sight of her and started over. Rémie raised a hand and waved, hugging Amaya excitedly as soon as her friend was close enough. "You look amazing! Happy birthday!" She signed after pulling back, fingers flashing quickly in excitement before she reminded herself to slow down—she'd been helping both Santos twins to practice their sign language, but she knew neither of them were experts or could necessarily keep up with her flying hands.
