❝ | All things considered, Archie was happy.
It seemed silly, each time he caught himself laughing or smiling, given the state of the world... but, it was true. He was happy, finally. It had taken mistakes being rectified, the reunion with Lenora, and nearly losing his life for the third time in order to finally reach a state of euphoria.
And now, at the end of the world, what was there left to do but be happy with what he had?
Occasionally, Archie felt a modicum of guilt, knowing how much more suffering there was in the world now that Death had set out to end it. Still, he was near family, had the love of his life back, and was breathing. What more was there to ask for at that point? Beggars couldn't be choosers, even in the worst case scenario like the one that the world was in.
Still... he was happy.
Archie had been folding various blankets and linens with a group of survivors, chatting and making casual jokes. It almost seemed normal, as if he were simply doing the same job that he'd been doing at St. Mungo's before the world had fallen apart.
At the sound of his name, Archie peered up, lips pulled back in a smile. To his surprise, Astrid Henio was standing a few feet away, far from the sheepish girl he'd known before.
"Astrid, you're okay!" Archie said, beaming. He moved in to hug the younger girl - an unlikely friend in the dark.

“ Astrid was not a fighter, had never thought she would find herself with the Order, but she supposed nothing was the same as it had once been.
Mere hours after the world came crashing down, the Potter siblings had been whisked off to one of the few remaining safehouses of the Order. Astrid had followed along, holding tight to Josie all the while. After everything they'd been through, even the end of the world wasn't going to keep Astrid from her girlfriend.
That put Astrid in the middle of the Order, or whatever was left of it.
Keeping busy was the best Astrid could do. She had no idea what was going to happen—no one did, anymore. It was all they could do to survive, now, in the world left after Death's destruction. Astrid did her best to stay close to Josie, fear outweighing her desire to help far more often than it should have in the first few weeks, but as the new normal began to sink in, Astrid knew she needed to help. There were so few people left, and every one of them needed to pull their weight.
Astrid wasn't exactly a good candidate for scouting missions, out into the world full of bloodthirsty vampires and Kindred running amuck, but she could at least transport supplies between safehouses. Her apparition still wasn't perfect, but she'd been training hard with Professor Allard before her death and she'd gotten better. Still not good enough to pass her apparition exam, but licensing was the least of anyone's worries now. That was her task that day, moving bags of canned food and linens between safehouses.
Astrid apparated into one such safehouse, immediately met with the chatter of people working. Her eyes grew wide when she realized she recognized one of the people. "Archie!" There had been precious few friendly faces in the Order for Astrid (no doubt a few of the people she crossed paths with were wondering why the hell a Henio was in their midst), and the few people she knew and trusted rarely had more than a tired grimace to offer her. Seeing Archie's smiling face was a relief.
"Astrid, you're okay!"
"I'm so glad you're okay," Astrid breathed, hugging Archie back just as tightly as he hugged her. "I mean—you are okay, right?"

❝ | Archie still wasn't entirely sure how he'd managed to find a friend like Astrid Henio. Merlin knew how insufferable her brother was. He supposed that the odds had to be in her favor - Tavas had gotten so much of the bad genes from the Henio dynasty, he'd likely sapped them all away from Astrid. She was good, and kind, and he was surprisingly relieved to see that she was okay. He'd seen Josie Potter a short while ago, as well as Beckett, so he supposed he should have assumed that she would have been close by. The two young women rarely went anywhere without each other now that they were officially together - of course the end of the world would only solidify that. The pair embraced tightly, two old friends just trying to survive."I'm so glad you're okay. I mean—you are okay, right?""As okay as I can be, given the circumstances," Archie replied, pulling out of the hug. "I'm apparently hard to kill - barely made it out of the party where everything happened, but I'm here, and alive. That's all I can really ask for. Where were you when everything went to hell?" |

“ Until recently, Astrid Henio had not been a person who could afford true friends. Friends were dangerous, in the life she had led. They could hold secrets, secrets that could come out and ruin Astrid. The closest she had to friends were the peers she was expected to associate with, fellow Pureblood children that would one day inherit Pureblood society from their parents. They had a cross to bear, a responsibility. That pressure caused them to keep each other at arms' length, close enough to associate with but never close enough to really know them.
But with Archie, and Chloe, and the handful of others she had befriended over the last year or so, it was different, in an almost impossible-to-understand way. She could be herself, or at least a bit closer to herself. There were no secrets to keep or pretenses to uphold. It was.... weird. Astrid was still trying to get used to it.
"As okay as I can be, given the circumstances. I'm apparently hard to kill - barely made it out of the party where everything happened, but I'm here, and alive. That's all I can really ask for. Where were you when everything went to hell?"
Astrid stepped back from the embrace at last, setting down the last bag she carried. Archie's words and tone, despite how grim the situation and subject matter was, made her smile. "With Josie, we were at her nan's." It had taken a lot of time, that night, to figure out what was going on. The Potter siblings and those close to them had been swiftly taken into Order custody, taken to safety and kept far away from the danger of Death's destruction. By the time it became clear what was happening, it was too late to do much. Astrid still wondered about her parents, about Tavas... but she couldn't go looking for them. Not now.
"We didn't even see a lot of what happened. Got swept off to a safehouse not long after word got out about the masquerade." Astrid Alexandria Henio★ dandy ♫

❝ | Despite the subject matter, Astrid let loose a sweet, genuine smile, and it warmed Archie's heart to no end. He was far from the type to want to ignore the horrors in the world - he'd lived them far before the apocalypse had come. It was part of the reason he'd decided on a career in healing, wanting to change the world for the better. To do so, one couldn't shy away from horrible things that happened to people in the world.Still, it was nice to see that there was still some joy to be found, even if it was small. Even something as small as a smile warmed him, gave him a shred of hope that not all was lost to the void that Death seemed intent on creating."With Josie, we were at her nan's."That was the Burrow, if he wasn't mistaken. That seemed as good a place as any to hunker down - and Merlin only knew that the Potter-Granger-Weasley clan was tough as nails. They'd suffered so much in three decades, but they were a strong bunch. If there was anyone who would protect those closest to them, it was that family."We didn't even see a lot of what happened. Got swept off to a safehouse not long after word got out about the masquerade.""I'm glad you missed it - it wasn't pretty," Archie replied, shaking his head. His tone dropped. "Professor Steele isn't doing well, and I'm worried what that's going to do to what little morale there is," he admitted. "She lost Professor Malvolio - he sacrificed himself to get her and everyone else out, from what I heard. I was gone by that point." |
