there's all these secrets that i can't keep ❝ There was one key piece in Wesley’s plans, and it was neither of his sisters. No matter how much he loved them, Wesley could not burden them with his intentions. There was also the matter of how neither of them would support what he was about to do. Maeve would likely be less vocal, but if Kitty ever found out…
Wesley was making sure Kitty didn’t find out. Not for a long, long while, at least. When everything was already done. When no changes could be made.
No, his entire plan hinged on Nathaniel Fernsby. It hadn’t been difficult to find out who his youngest sister was seeing. Even if Wes hadn’t heard it from her, he could’ve had it figured out. If Maeve was spending time with a young man, it usually wasn’t romance. It was her stupid, reckless behaviors. The ones that were going to get her killed if she wasn’t careful - and she never, ever was.
It was the biggest thorn in Wesley’s side. So he had worked something out, he hoped, that would both minimize that and stop whatever little silly shit she was up to with this man. This unsuspecting man, who had no idea what he was getting into.
Contacting Nathaniel had been a little difficult, especially because Wesley was certain that he was being tracked by his father. He acted as if his every move was being watched. It was that reason that he could not involve his sisters just as much as any other.
He did not want it getting traced back to them.
Everything was arranged and in place, it was just time to see if this gentleman would help him.
Wesley did not disguise himself, seeing no reason to. If he was being watched, then fine. He was not leading them to his sister directly - and hopefully, the connection between this stranger and Maeve would forever stay buried.
He had asked Nathaniel come to the bookshop. It was easier that way, especially for the proposition he was about to make. And, since the attack, he had made sure that the security was improved. At least to have a private enough moment to get his request across.
It was strange, he knew, but he really hoped that this worked. Wes hadn’t realized he’d been holding his breath until he saw the man walk through the door of his shop, the little bells tinkling in the hushed silence.
Wes stood, gesturing for Nathaniel to follow him. He led them back into his office, which he had warded several times over to be safe.
“My apologies for the…unorthodox introduction,” he said, settling into his chair and gesturing to another for Nathaniel to sit in. “It’s my understanding that you are well…acquainted with my youngest sister, Maeve.”

“ The letter that had been deposited on Nathaniel's windowsill by the tawny owl had been... suspicious, to say the least. He didn't recognize the name Wesley, nor did he understand why this man would want to meet him at Flourish and Blotts, of all places. In a world so dark, it was hard not to be suspicious of just about everything. Nathaniel was far removed from the war, sure, but the powers at play had long since proven they didn't care who got caught in the crossfire.
Still, it would never be said that Nathaniel was untrusting or thought the worst of people. Even if the invitation had been odd and unorthodox, he had to believe that there was no malicious intent behind it. In a world so dark, with tragedies happening around every corner, Nathaniel held on to that belief that there were good people in the world. So, that afternoon Nathaniel had taken himself to Flourish and Blotts, as the letter had instructed.
Nathaniel didn't recognize the man that rose and gestured to him, but he could only assume this was the one that had written him. He offered Wesley a polite smile and followed him back to the office, settling into the chair Wesley had gestured to.
"My apologies for the…unorthodox introduction. It’s my understanding that you are well…acquainted with my youngest sister, Maeve."
"I'm afraid there aren't many normal introductions, anymore," Nathaniel replied with a small nod. At the mention of Maeve, he couldn't help the smile that lit up his face. They had only spent a few months together, now—and he wasn't entirely sure if they were dating, or just hanging out. They hadn't discussed it—but Nathaniel found that some of his best days were when he saw the young woman who had captured his attention so. "I suppose you could say that, yes. We've been acquainted, as you say, for a few months now. Is she in some kind of trouble?"

there's all these secrets that i can't keep ❝ Wes could tell by Nathaniel’s body language that he didn’t necessarily fully trust this meeting at first. It was as good a confirmation as any in his mind about this young man’s character. He, too, would have been suspicious and on edge. Nathaniel seemed careful, diligent, and kind. Wesley did not approve of many of the things Maeve did, but having this gentleman in her life was something that he did approve of. Even if he knew his sister was merely using him.
It was equal parts endearing and perhaps slightly alarming that Nathaniel lit up when he mentioned Maeve. Clearly, he had it bad. Which, as Maeve’s elder brother, was sweet to know that someone had such affection for her. However, Wesley knew Maeve. He knew she likely didn’t share those feelings. Even if she did, her mischief always won out. She was using him, playing him, and it was that which Wesley was trying to outplay her with.
I’m afraid there aren’t many normal introductions anymore.
That was more than true. Wesley realized a little too late that his haggled, wounded and destroyed appearance likely didn’t help matters.
I suppose you could say that, yes. We’ve been acquainted, as you say, for a few months now. Is she in some kind of trouble?
Wesley couldn’t help the laughter that barked out of his mouth. “Maeve is some kind of trouble, and I mean that as seriously as I mean that you are likely better off having never met her.” It was a harsh thing to say about her sister, but he needed to know, Wes felt he needed to warn Nathaniel just how dangerous his sister could be. “I’m not saying you should leave her, or that you two shouldn’t see each other, I’m not that brother. If anything, I’m looking out for you more than her…”
The half-werewolf trailed off, shaking his head. He hoped, he prayed, that the things he was about to do would shake some sense and self-preservation into his sister. That they would shake her out of this stupid, reckless lifestyle and force her to settle down and stay safe. All his previous attempts had failed, but he had realized that to get through to his wild sister, he needed to do something equally wild and perhaps stupid.
But it was all he had left.
“I know it may not seem like it now, but please trust me. Maeve is after one thing in most, if not all, of her relationships, and that is money. One day, you’re going to wake up and she is going to be gone, and with her, some of your most valuable assets. My sister is,” he forced out a sigh and shook his head in exasperation, “she’s my sister, and I love her, but she has no idea the things that are happening, and she refuses to listen and keep herself safe. She’ll take you for everything, and I’m hoping that what I’m about to do will stop her.”
Wes sat forward and opened one of the drawers in his desk, pulling out a folder and setting it before Nathaniel.
“I’m going to sell you my bookstore.”

Nathaniel's pleasant smile melted away, lips turning further and further into a frown the longer he listened to Wesley speak. That didn't sound like the Maeve he knew; she was kind, funny, beautiful, a little airheaded with a taste for the finer things that Nathaniel didn't quite mirror, but she wasn't this troublesome figure her brother was making her out to be.
He opened his mouth to say something, but in the end decided against it. Nathaniel wasn't sure what he would say if he had tried, in that moment. So he stayed quiet, figuring he would come up with something to say in response to Wesley eventually. Sometimes his brain just needed a second to catch up.
“I know it may not seem like it now, but please trust me. Maeve is after one thing in most, if not all, of her relationships, and that is money. She’ll take you for everything, and I’m hoping that what I’m about to do will stop her.”
"Look, Mr.—Mr. Dawlish," Nathaniel started to protest, pausing for a split second in indecision over Wesley's surname. He was probably also a Dawlish, right? Oh well, it didn't matter that much, he supposed. "I am sure that you and your sister have a history, but she is not—"
“I’m going to sell you my bookstore.”
Nathaniel stopped short at Wesley's next words, caught off-guard by Wesley's plan. Why on earth would this stranger, this man Nathaniel had only met mere minutes before, sell his business to him? "I'm sorry, I don't think I'm fully understanding," Nathaniel said at last, after blinking blankly at Wesley for what must have been a solid fifteen seconds. It all seemed a bit preposterous, built upon an assumption Nathaniel still wasn't sure he believed in. "If Maeve will, as you say, take me for a fool—though I don't see how the Maeve I know would ever be possible of something like that—how does you selling me your business stop that?"
