biography Emmaline and Hugo Fernsby were not what one would call a match made in heaven; though their match was not as contentious as Emmaline’s older brother’s marriage to a veela, a pureblood French woman marrying a British halfblood was still considered controversial by many outside of the Cantrelle family. Emmaline, the youngest of the Cantrelle children, graduated Beauxbatons as a shining star of her class. She could have had the pick of virtually any position in the French Ministry of Magic, but she chose to take a year off before deciding on a career path. Her year-long break after graduation turned out to be the best decision she would ever make. Emmaline and Hugo Fernsby met the summer after she graduated, when she was visiting London on holiday. Though they only spent a few days together, their connection was immediate and electric. The two kept in touch when Emmaline returned home to France, exchanging letters that soon became the highlight of Emmaline’s days. In a matter of months, the pair of lovers’ letters had become stolen moments together, whenever one could travel to the other’s city and spend a few days together. Why they were so committed to keeping their relationship a secret, neither could say; maybe it was a result of Emmaline’s older brother’s all but disownment by the family, or just a desire to keep it between them. Whatever it was, no one in Hugo or Emmaline’s family knew they were even seeing each other until, five months after they met, Hugo asked Emmaline to marry him. She of course accepted and the two were married in Paris, moving to Hugo’s hometown of London after the wedding. It was in London that, a year and a half into their marriage, Emmaline and Hugo welcomed a son to their family. He was named Oscar Hugo Fernsby, the apple of Emmaline’s eye. Two years later, the Fernsby family grew to four, this time a daughter named Eliza. Emmaline and Hugo were happy with their two children, and so it was a big surprise when, two and a half years later, Emmaline found herself pregnant once more, this time with a golden-haired boy to be named Nathaniel. For a few, blissful moments, the family was happy and perfect. Hugo had, by then, earned a position in the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, and Emmaline was more than content to stay at home and raise her children. The Fernsbys lived in South London, in a gorgeous four-bedroom townhouse, and all was well. When Oscar came of age, Emmaline and Hugo paid for him to attend Beauxbatons, his mother’s alma mater. Then, as good things always do, everything fell apart. It was on the eve of his twelfth birthday, just before he was to enter his second year at Beauxbatons, that Hugo crossed the path of a rogue werewolf and was killed. Emmaline and Hugo were devastated to lose their eldest son, though the Fernsby family’s suffering would only increase when, less than a year later, Hugo Fernsby was killed in an accident on assignment for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. Emmaline was devastated to lose her husband, especially so soon after the death of her eldest son. Stranded in a city she had no real ties to, with an eight year old daughter and a six year old son not able to grasp the loss of their father and brother in the span of a year, Emmaline had few choices at her disposal. Though she had never held a job of her own, she did manage to find a job at Slugg and Jiggers, allowing her and her children to remain in London. Her husband’s life insurance money allowed her to send Eliza and Nathaniel to Beauxbatons, and she was able to pick up the shattered pieces of their life and provide her children with the best childhood possible. Nathaniel entered Beauxbatons with a name already made for himself, though never would it have been a name he would have chosen for himself; everywhere Nathaniel went, at least for his first year or two at the school, he was known as the brother of the boy who died. It was a moniker that hung heavy on his every movement, one he wouldn’t begin to outgrow until his third or fourth year, when he was older than his brother ever got the chance to be. It was also at Beauxbatons, however, that Nathaniel’s true gifts became clear to him. He had never been able to explain the flickering objects and figures he caught glimpses of when he gazed into mirrors, nor was he able to ever articulate them to his mother or anyone else who asked. It was only when he received his first vision, a sudden image that sent him to the floor of his Charms class, that he was referred to the Divination professor at Beauxbatons and finally had a name for what he was, for what the things he saw meant. Nathaniel’s Sight was nurtured and allowed to flourish under the professor’s mentorship, allowed to grow and expand in his years at the school. By the time he graduated, Nathaniel was a gifted Seer, though few outside of his close friends and family were privy to his gift. It wouldn’t be for many years that Nathaniel would be able to truly grasp the fate of Fernsby men. He had been young when his brother and father died, though the history of the loss of his grandfather, and various uncles and cousins, made for a convincing case in Nathaniel’s eyes: Fernsby men were not made for this earth, and his days were numbered. Following graduation from Beauxbatons, Nathaniel returned to London, living with his mother for a few years while he attempted to figure out his direction in life. He bounced around between jobs, unsure what he necessarily wanted to do. His mother supported him in the two years he bounced between jobs, more interested in her son being fulfilled and happy than anything else. Nathaniel bounced between positions for some time. He only lasted at the Three Broomsticks as a bartender for two weeks, and a shelf stocker at Flourish and Blotts for three and a half. It was only when at last he landed an off-air job at a London radio station that Nathaniel decided he had found where he belonged. It was a job he flourished in, and soon enough he had landed the host of a radio show in the afternoons. It was in those years between school and finding his career path, though, that Nathaniel found his passion. It started as a simple community outreach program one of his various jobs put on, packing boxes of food for disadvantaged communities, but something about the experience lit a flame under Nathaniel. Soon enough he was volunteering at soup kitchens on the weekends and enrolled in several different mentorship programs for at risk youth in London. Nathaniel Fernsby may not be long for the world, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make the world a little better while he could. Nathaniel's life was going great. He had moved out of his mother's house, had a successful job and a fulfilling life outside of it, and he was even dating a wonderful guy. It should've been a wonderful time in Nathaniel's life but, as had been the story of his life thus far, it all came crashing down. In October 2020, his mother Emmaline was diagnosed with stage three lymphoma. The prognosis was grim, and Nathaniel and his sister spent the next year trying to nurse their mother through her sickness. Nathaniel's work suffered and his budding relationship was ended abruptly. When the terminal diagnosis was received by the family, Nathaniel began researching newer, more advanced treatments outside of the UK. Sadly, it was all for naught, for on December 19, 2021, Emmaline Fernsby passed away at the age of 49. As Nathaniel grapples with losing his last remaining parent, he has returned to his life as it was before his mother's diagnosis, trying to pick up the pieces left behind in the wake of such tragedy.
