you die, i thrive, and so it goes, In her attempt to guarantee the survival of herself and the man she loved, Marianna had placed them directly into custody. They offered no extra protection against Death and its armies, but they had healers with skills she did not possess. He would be angry at her but she could live with that far easier than letting him die.
The silence of her new prison was overwhelming. Marianna had thought the most irritating part of being apprehended by the Order would be the constant questioning as the want-to-be heroes' attempted to get information from her. What she had not anticipated was how maddening the silence would be, how without access to her mind-shredding talons, the only thoughts she had to grapple with were her own. With so many wards and spells, she had no access to her magic either, leaving her defenseless on top of it all.
They had yet to tell her if Aurelius had indeed survived, nor had they given her any information on the location of her daughter. All the arguing and demanding had done little; they had only assured her of possible attempts to locate her girl before leaving her to rot. She'd yet to see Piper, though she had demanded it time and time again. They had let her change out of her blood-stained gown, leaving her in a plain and rather ill fitting grey instead that she could only assume was Piper's or some other soul. A Healer had come to look at her side, confirming that her opponent had missed any major organ before sealing up the gash that left her side still tender.
The sound of two pairs of approaching feet drew her out of her book, a resort she'd taken to combat her raging thoughts. The chessboard she'd been given did little good without an opponent, but this activity provided some level of peace. A smile graced her features as she took in the two before her. One was a young man, one she vaguely recognized from the swirling evening her cousin had deposited her into custody, and the other was Claire Fernsby. She brushed a stray curl from her face, no longer tamed by her magic, before she finally spoke.
"What can I do for you both?"

“ It had been a bloodbath.
There was no way the Order and the Children could have anticipated Ivan's treachery, or just how terrible the night had gone. None of them could have guessed that Death himself would blow through the manor's windows and order their deaths. They couldn't have even begun to imagine the slaughter, the vampires that took sch pleasure in their deaths and the Kindred who were more than happy to help.
So few of them had escaped, and those that managed to escape were broken and scattered. It was impossible to know who was dead, who was alive but had gone underground, and who was still up and fighting. Raphael couldn't count how many people had been confirmed dead. Friends, allies, and strangers alike made up that list.
Raphael had been no exception to the destruction. Though he had managed to escape the masquerade massacre with only minimal injuries, a few broken bones and plenty of bruises and cuts, the heavy bandage that covered the hole where his eye had once been told enough of a story. Whatever spell the Kindred member had shot at him as London burned had eaten through his eye and into his skull, and probably would have killed him if Julieta hadn't been there. There was no fixing the damage the curse had wrought, but at least Raphael had lived to tell the tale.
Now, he supposed he and the world was left to try to figure out what came next.
A bit unsteady on his feet, Raphael followed Claire down the stairs, towards the cell where Marianna Lestrange was being held. At least they had captured her, in all of the mayhem. Maybe that counted for something, though Raphael's optimism was nearly depleted by now.
They had lost the war. It was time to accept that.
The former Dark Lady regarded the pair of Order members evenly for a long moment before she spoke. In that time, Raphael leaned lightly against the wall opposite her cell. He had found that balancing and perceiving depth was harder when one had only a single eye, and the last thing he needed was to fall over or run into something while he and Claire talked to Marianna.
"What can I do for you both?"
Raphael set his jaw, not replying just yet. There was a lot Marianna could do for them, including having not released Death to begin with. In a way, everything that had happened, all the lives that had been lost, all of that blood was on Marianna's hands, as much as if she had killed them all herself. There was nothing redeemable about the woman that sat in the cell before him.
But Raphael didn't voice any of those thoughts, instead deciding to let Claire speak first. She was in charge, technically—she was still a Second of whatever of the Order was left.

Don’t stop Trying to find me here Amidst the chaos Claire couldn’t be sure the Order even existed anymore, let alone did anything productive. They’d lost the war. It was really as simple as that. Death and its stupid minions had won, London burned, and anyone left alive had fled. Including Claire and Gen, actually. Claire had created her best safehouse yet, sealed with a fidelius charm. Emma was the secret-keeper, in a safehouse of her own. And that meant Gen was relatively safe. But Claire was stubborn. She didn’t actually know when or how to quit. So, despite the heavy losses, despite the horrors she’d witnessed at the site when trying to extract Mireille, despite the loss of Olivia still looming over her, she moved. More safehouses went up around the country, werewolves smuggled away, research done in quiet corners. Days slipped by, then a week. By the time she’d gotten word that they had Marianna in custody, they’d actually had her for a while. And despite it all, Claire did want to talk to her. No one was allowed to see the dark lady by themselves, for good reason. She was unarmed, the safehouse cell guarded with a beautiful set of wards that kept almost all magic at bay, and yet Marianna was still a threat. So, Claire took Raphael with her. He was nearby, and most importantly he was still alive. It helped, though, that they’d been friendly in school. One familiar face amidst this desolation. ”What can I do for you both?”Claire didn’t answer, instead unlocking and opening the door of the cell, and stepping inside. She gestured for Raphael to do the same before closing it behind the both of them. Marianna was less scary up close, Claire observed. Just a person, after all. A person who’d been left alone in a cell for over a week. Her hair was a frizzy mess, her clothes probably the same ones she’d been given on the first night. Good. Let her experience discomfort. Spotting the chess set, Claire stepped over to it, taking a seat. Her leg was killing her after days spent on her feet. She’d go to her shared safehouse with Gen multiple times a day to check in, always panicked that something with her spellwork would go wrong, but Claire was rarely there longer than the length of a nap. The end of the world was tiring. She leaned forward, pushed a pawn two squares forward. ”Why don’t you tell me something,” she said slowly, leaning back in the chair as she spoke. Claire hadn’t played chess in years, but she’d loved it as a child. Been decent too, beating most of the other kids in school. But she wasn’t a devoted player, letting the hobby fall by the wayside as she devoted herself to things she’d loved more. Such was the way of life. ”Something about that party, perhaps. What did you know?” MADE BY VEL OF GS

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, As the door to her prison opened Marianna made no move forward. She had assured Orion that she would cause no trouble in her captivity and intended to keep her word. He had while delivering her into Order custody, been successful in keeping Aurelius alive. Still, as Claire Fernsby and her male companion strode headlong into her space, the thought had flickered to life for just a moment that she could be free.
There were far worse fates waiting beyond this. She'd slaughtered those that had turned their wands on her beloved without a second thought, sending vampires careening into pits of flame. She had stepped out of line for the last time; there was no going back. All she had to cling to was that Eleanor had the capabilities to keep her daughter out of the line of fire.
The male remained standing, jaw set and face hidden by a bandage. It hardly took the mental game she could play to read he would rather be elsewhere than in her prison. His companion settled into the chair at the chessboard, taking not a moment to observe the game before sliding a pawn into place. The noise drew her attention and though she observed the board from a distance, she did not yet cross to play.
"Why don't you tell me something, something about that party, perhaps?"
Marianna tilted her head, her green eyes still on the game. It was necessary to consider the possibilities, to plan one's moves well in advance. It wasn't just a game of prowess, but of mental fortitude. She did not miss the irony of the applications to this single conversation, though Marianna considered much of life to operate under the same rules and terms of this singular game. She couldn't recall the last time she had finished a match, in the years she had been playing with Aurelius she had lost as many games as she had won, though they took months to complete. This one, she surmised, would be simple.
"What did you know?"
"I already told the last ones you sent here that I'll speak freely to Piper or my cousins," the Dark Lady finally spoke as she crossed the room to stand before the board. She lifted a pawn and set it down with a soft thud before drawing away. Finally, her eyes met Claire's, in challenge and warning. "For the two of you, there's a cost. You useless lot have yet to answer the most basic of questions." There was an edge of annoyance in her tone; she turned to observe the man again, her eyes narrowed, "and I'm bored and growing impatient."
Her gaze settled on the game once more as she slid into the chair opposite Claire. It would all be a simple enough game if they could play correctly. "An answer for an answer, or you'll get nothing at all."

“ Raphael's head pounded. The healer that had patched him up said it was probably just a result of losing his eye, his brain having to work overtime to compensate for his impaired eyesight. That made sense, sure, but he wasn't sure he believed that. He knew how his head ached when his Sight was working overdrive, though his Inner Eye had offered him little more than Feelings of dread and impending doom. Every waking moment filled him with the fear of what could come next, an overwhelming sense of dread shadowing every move.
What other doom could be coming, after the hell that had already happened, he couldn't fathom.
”Why don’t you tell me something. Something about that party, perhaps. What did you know?” "I already told the last ones you sent here that I'll speak freely to Piper or my cousin. For the two of you, there's a cost. You useless lot have yet to answer the most basic of questions, and I'm bored and growing impatient. An answer for an answer, or you'll get nothing at all."
Raphael bristled at Marianna's words, shifting from one foot to the other and crossing his arms across his chest. This woman had brought about the end of the world, and now she wanted to sit here and be ordering them around? A week ago Raphael might have let it roll off his back without comment, but a lot had happened in the past week. Thousands, probably millions now, were dead, and it was all Marianna's fault. She should have counted herself lucky that the Order hadn't killed her on sight and been thankful for anything they were willing to give her.
"With all due respect, Marianna," He said at last, words practically dripping with disdain. Raphael stared Marianna down, meeting the former Dark Lady's gaze levelly. It was odd, how little he feared her. Maybe it was because he no longer had anything to lose; his parents and sister were probably dead, most of the people he called friends were too, and he was down an eye. There was nothing left for Marianna to take from him. She was just a woman now. "Which is to say, none at all, you aren't exactly in any position to be making demands. You'll answer our questions, and maybe then we'll decide to answer some of yours."

Don’t stop Trying to find me here Amidst the chaos It had only been a couple of weeks since Claire and Marianna had met under much different circumstances. Claire had felt anger then, first for the part this woman had played in Emma’s kidnap and torture, and then for the death of Claire’s other sister. Coming here, she’d thought she would be angry at the sight of Marianna. But sitting in front of her, meeting the challenge of her gaze, Claire felt nothing but contempt. Marianna Lestrange had been powerful once and she was a threat still, but a lesser one than those roaming free outside this place. Inside here, in this tiny cell, Marianna was just a person who’d lost something. She had that in common with each and every one of her captors. And despite any words she might have to the contrary, Claire knew that Marianna didn’t hold the reigns of this conversation. ”I already told the last ones you sent here that I’ll speak freely to Piper or my cousins.””Then I’m sorry to tell you that none of them are interested in speaking to you,” Claire responded evenly, not an ounce of apology in her tone despite the words. She watched quietly as Marianna placed a pawn on the board, a standard opening move. Claire barely considered it- the beginning hardly mattered so long as you didn’t blunder. ”For the two of you, there’s a cost. You useless lot have yet to answer the most basic of questions. An answer for an answer, or you’ll get nothing at all.””With all due respect, Marianna. Which is to say, none at all, you aren’t exactly in any position to be making demands. You’ll answer our questions, and maybe then we’ll decide to answer some of yours.”Claire could’ve laughed at Raph’s words; she’d never seen him like this. Her strongest memories of him were from their school days, when he was just a sweet and quiet boy with strange visions or feelings. She liked that he’d become a force to be reckoned with, respected that in him. To honor his courage, she brought a knight out onto the board and glanced back up to meet Marianna’s eyes, the look in which Claire suddenly found amusing. ”He has a point, you know,” Claire mused, keeping her comments directed just at Marianna. ”We can just leave and come back another day. What’s it been, days since someone’s spoken to you? We have plenty of other things to do if you don’t want to have a conversation.” Claire trailed off for a moment, lazily glancing about the little cell in which Marianna had been contained the past several days. ”But,” she offered, slowly turning her gaze back to face the other woman. ”If you are able to produce something interesting, I’m sure there are some questions of yours that we’d be willing to answer.”MADE BY VEL OF GS
