biography Claire was born on a cold February morning, fourth of the five Fernsby children. She was very quiet as a child, letting her older siblings do most of the talking for her. Early on, she had a fascination with magic, sometimes “borrowing” a wand from her parents or siblings in an attempt to do magic of her own. She was delighted upon receiving her Hogwarts letter and rushed happily off to the school, where she was swiftly sorted into Ravenclaw. Claire fit in well there and quickly rose to the top of her class, doing particularly well in Charms. In her second year, she read about the healing arts and became fixated on the idea of becoming a Healer. She kept her grades high and earned OWLs in every subject to keep this dream alive. The summer before Claire’s 6th year, everything changed. Her parents had always loved to experiment and typically tried out their latest inventions in their workshop in the backyard. That August day, Henry announced to the kids that they had finished a particularly spectacular invention and invited them out back to the workshop. All the kids except Olivia, who was already graduated and working at the time, followed their parents to the workshop where they fired up a mysterious device. The kids got closer, trying to figure out what it was. Suddenly, the machine exploded, launching shrapnel and quickly catching fire. Claire was hit in the mid right thigh with a large piece of metal. Unable to move much, she merely watching as other pieces hit her siblings and parents. She tried desperately to crawl away as the fire approached, but the weight pinned her down. As the flames started to reach her feet and calves, she was pulled furiously out from under the metal by Emma. The two of them were then able to crawl out of the workshop and send for help. Despite their efforts, Emma and Claire were the only survivors of the accident, as responders were only able to find the charred remains of their family members. Devastated, the three surviving sisters arranged a burial, which Claire attended in a wheelchair, as she was still unable to walk. She stayed at St. Mungo’s for weeks as the Healers tried first to save her leg, and then to get her function back. By the time her 6th year started, Claire could walk with a cane. Claire was dealt another emotional blow early into the term, as Olivia announced that she would move out of the country for a job opportunity. And at the end of the term, Emma hastily left the country too, leaving Claire alone for the first time in her life. She stayed with a friend for the summer, buckled down in school and at work for her last year at Hogwarts, and graduated without the ambition she once held. Claire moved to Hogsmeade, where she continues to work. She walks with only a small limp now, which is more pronounced as she tires. And she hasn’t seen either of her sisters in years.
