❝ | He wasn't sure how long he'd been in this particular cage.
The Order, to their credit, had ensured that he was comfortable this time - or, as comfortable as he could be, given how long he'd been unconscious and recovering from the brutalization at the masquerade.
He didn't remember much... but, Aurelius knew that it had been a slaughter, and that he'd been targeted very quickly. Marianna had done her best to help, but even she had been betrayed at the end of it all.
She'd saved his life - and brought them both right back to the Order.
Aurelius hadn't seen Marianna since he'd passed out on the floor of Orion Lestrange's home, though he was certain that she was being kept somewhere just as he was. He had never assumed that going to the Order for help would be something within her capabilities... but, it seemed even she wasn't so arrogant as to admit when she had lost.
Aurelius still wasn't sure what the level of his injuries had been - all he knew was that he only had one usable arm, and still had no feeling past his hips. The healer that had come in to check on him that morning said that there would likely be lasting damage - but, that he should be able to walk again someday.
If the world didn't end before then, that was.
Aurelius was lying slightly propped up in the bed within his cell when the door to the cellar he dwelled in opened. One eye opened to survey his newest visitor, and his lips curled into a partially amused smile.
"Finally come to see me, Arthur?"

arthur lewis holmesembers ★ | I do not suffer insanity, I enjoy every minute i'm talking to his shadow, suspended on dust Ever since Lauren had died, it seemed as though time was moving differently. It could have been months or mere seconds since he heard the news, and he would not be able to tell the difference. Things had devolved so quickly after that. He felt like he’d only just managed to get his feet under him and begin to take care of the young teenager now in his charge and help him in grieving his murdered mother, when a student then tried to take his own life, the school was shut down and London had been set ablaze by Death and its followers. For so long, he had felt as though he had a handle on things. Sure he was not one of those in charge of steering their society towards a better path, but he had been close enough. His proximity to powerful figures had always meant that he had a finger on the pulse of the war, he was able to predict most of the oncoming shifts and movements.
This, though. This had blindsided him. Arthur was lost, and he did not know how to find his way back onto a road that made sense. Paxton, bless his heart, tried his best. He wanted to understand, Arthur could see it in his eyes, but at the end of the day it was different. He had not been involved. If it came down to it, he would tell the other man to take the kids and run as far as he could, to never look back at the burning wreckage that was the city they’d both once loved. What Paxton didn’t understand was why Arthur couldn’t bring himself to leave. He wasn’t sure he himself understood it either, but he did know that there was at least one person who would.
After many sleepless nights, he found himself drawn to the one Order safehouse he’d avoided since finding out which prisoner was being kept there. He thought that chapter of his life had been closed. He wanted so badly to move on, to find happiness in his life purely as it was. And yet, here he was. Seeking comfort from the monster that hid under his bed.
“You’re looking well Aurelius. More alive than I anticipated.”

❝ | Aurelius was woefully unaware of what the outside world looked like, with the Order keeping their lips shut tightly whenever he was able to ask. They'd alluded to things being difficult... but, Aurelius was left to his own devices to assume just what had transpired after the party. It wasn't difficult to imagine the level of destruction, though it was certainly hard to fathom how wildly the world likely had changed from Death's attack. So, when Arthur entered the room looking relatively well-rested and put-together, Aurelius couldn't help but wonder if nothing substantial had happened at all. He hadn't imagined the masquerade, nor the fallout, and he certainly hadn't faked his injuries... but, for a moment, Aurelius wondered if this was some cruel joke being played on him.It was even more suspicious when Arthur greeted him warmly."You’re looking well Aurelius. More alive than I anticipated.”"More alive than I likely deserve, if we are being honest with ourselves," Aurelius replied, a sliver of dark humor curling the left corner of his mouth upwards in a wry smile. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit? I don't know that I have any information that could warrant an interrogation, though I suppose that has never stopped the Order before."

arthur lewis holmesembers ★ | I do not suffer insanity, I enjoy every minute i'm talking to his shadow, suspended on dust “Good to see that you haven’t lost your sense of humour after all those injuries,” Arthur commented wryly. The room was sparsely furnished, though it was not the slightest bit surprising given the circumstances. With everything going on in the world outside of this cell, ensuring that the holding cells of the Order’s most were well decorated was hardly a priority for the organization. The fact that they had Aurelius at this point was important enough, they did not care particularly much about making sure he had an entertaining view. Though, Arthur supposed he was the one providing the view at this point. Still, there was a single chair which he dragged over to the glass so that he could look his captive in the eye as they spoke.
“Oh you don’t have any information that we don’t at this point, Aurelius, I’m sure that that’s an interesting position for you to be in.” He shrugged, crossing one leg over the other and leaning back in the chair. It was certainly interesting for him, if not Aurelius. In all the times they had spoken before, both men had been on equal footing, or at least some semblance of it. Now, Aurelius had no power. He had nothing to bargain with, no allies, and nothing to hold over Arthur’s head. He was helpless, and they both knew it. He was curious what the other man would do, now that he was cornered. “This is hardly an interrogation. Consider it… curiosity I suppose. I wanted to see where you had ended up, at the end of all this insanity.”

❝ | Better men than Aurelius might have taken the opportunity presented to them to reflect on their past mistakes, to become a kinder, more generous person. The thought had crossed the man's mind, of course - to right what wrongs he could, to shift his perspective. However, a tiger couldn't change its stripes, so to speak, and Aurelius had no intentions of truly changing his outlook on life. He was old, and had resigned himself to the fact that he likely would not be on the planet for much longer.Perhaps it was better that way, any way - a long life of sin coming crashing down around him, sending him to Hell or oblivion. He couldn't decide which was worse.Aurelius sat up as Arthur dragged a chair up to the glass that separated them, settling in nicely."Good to see that you haven’t lost your sense of humour after all those injuries.”Aurelius chuckled. "I need some way to pass the time," he replied."Oh you don’t have any information that we don’t at this point, Aurelius, I’m sure that that’s an interesting position for you to be in. This is hardly an interrogation. Consider it… curiosity I suppose. I wanted to see where you had ended up, at the end of all this insanity." "At the end?" Aurelius inquired, raising an eyebrow. "I highly doubt there is an end... not until Death finishes us off," he replied. An uncharacteristic chill ran down his spine, causing Aurelius to shiver slightly. He shifted, though he couldn't help the way the color drained from his face."I must admit... I was foolish for underestimating it. It nearly killed me. I... don't know that I've ever been afraid like that before. Not since my childhood at least, not since I had a fear of the dark. Have you seen it yet?" |

arthur lewis holmesembers ★ | I do not suffer insanity, I enjoy every minute i'm talking to his shadow, suspended on dust There was something disturbing about seeing Aurelius displaying… well any kind of emotion really. The man that Arthur was familiar with was more akin to a hawk than any person with feelings. He chose his targets well, whether they be physical or emotional, and stuck with no mercy. A predator trapped in a cage was still a predator, or at least that was how it had seemed the last time that they had been in such a predicament, with Arthur on one side of the glass and Aurelius on the other. But now he was not so sure. It was different than the last time, Aurelius no longer seemed convinced that he had everyone wrapped around his finger. If anything, he seemed resigned, afraid even. The caged hawk had had its wings clipped, and somehow that was more frightening.
“Is this not the end, at least for some things?” he replied, though he was not sure if the question even made sense in and of itself. He refused to believe that Death would ultimately have the power to end civilization as they knew it. It was a powerful being, sure, but it was not infallible. It had been trapped before, after all, and Arthur did not doubt that its arrogance would lead to its downfall once more, regardless of whether it was within his own lifetime or after it. It was ironic, in a way, how much that ran parallel to the man sitting before him.
“Aurelius Raymon, admitting that he wasn’t correct? This really is the end of all things,” he chuckled a little, though he knew it was hardly appropriate. It was difficult not to, there was something so absurd about this entire situation. “I can’t say that I’ve had the pleasure, no. And I don’t intend to, at least not for a long time. Though your fear of it does make me wonder, what the hell were you thinking?”

❝ | Arthur had always been difficult for Aurelius to read, though he'd made a good show of it thus far in their relationship with one another. It was the academic in him, Aurelius supposed - it was far easier to deal with children when you could perfect your poker face. Still, there was a wariness about Arthur that hadn't been there before, as if Aurelius was still a cobra coiled to strike. He supposed he couldn't blame the younger man - though Aurelius had not truly changed in any meaningful way, even he had to acknowledge that he was different than he had been.Encountering Death so intimately would do that.Aurelius had never been one to question his mortality, though he had found it more empowering to live his life without acknowledging it. If he existed as if he couldn't be touched, then that was the reality in which he'd lived. It had worked like a charm... until it hadn't."Is this not the end, at least for some things?”Aurelius could only give a simple shrug of his shoulders in response."Aurelius Raymon, admitting that he wasn’t correct? This really is the end of all things. I can’t say that I’ve had the pleasure, no. And I don’t intend to, at least not for a long time. Though your fear of it does make me wonder, what the hell were you thinking?”"I've made many mistakes in my life, but I've found it far easier to ignore them than to acknowledge them. I learn from them, sure... but, those are my crosses to bear in private," Aurelius replied. He considered Arthur's second question for a while before he responded, tone measured."I've found that it is easier to not put the entirety of my faith into others - Marianna included," he replied. "I have always been self-serving, though relationships like the one I have with her are unavoidable in life. I am human, after all," he explained. "I thought that I could keep her close, but that I could leave her in the end if things fell out of favor. I was wrong." |
