Winter Wonderland [Sawyer]

The season's first snowfall had graced London a few nights before, leaving a light dusting across the city. It was the perfect opportunity, in Blaise's mind, to go ice skating. When he finally got up the courage to ask out the cute dad he had met a few months ago and started talking to, it would be a spectacular date. Ice skating, some hot cocoa, maybe a walk through the park after. Blaise had even invited Sawyer's son, if Sawyer wanted to bring him. For a guy who had been brutally dumped more times than he could count, he liked to think this was a pretty A+ idea.

But that didn't stop him from being nervous as hell when the day came. 

Blaise had tried on probably a dozen different sweaters and jackets, trying to find the exact right outfit. It was his first date since he and Rose had broken up almost a year ago, and he didn't have the faintest idea what he was doing. Breathe, Blaise. It's going to be fine.

When at last Blaise had decided on an outfit, he apparated to Cardiff, to the little chocolate shoppe he and Sawyer had agreed to meet at. There were a few flurries in the air, coupled with a bright and cold wind, but besides the gleaming stars it looked to be a clear night. 

Blaise bounced anxiously on the balls of his feet, standing under the shoppe's awning to keep as much now out of his hair and off his shoulders as he could which he waited for Sawyer. 

When his date rounded the corner, Blaise couldn't help the smile that stretched across his lips. He raised a hand in greeting, waiting for Sawyer to join him in the warm light of the chocolate shoppe. "Hey, it's so good to see you," Blaise greeted when Sawyer drew near.

Sawyer hadn’t the faintest idea what he was doing, getting back into the dating scene like this. It had been hard enough in the days before Vienna, and now after the divorce he had more baggage. Of course, they didn’t see their son that way, Sawyer loved Basil more than anything, but that didn’t mean prospective suitors would see the boy similarly. Fortunately, the kindly man Sawyer had met in the apothecary seemed smitten with him anyway, and even in the few casual encounters they’d had, did well with Basil. Basil, who was enjoying the day with his grandpas, so his father could go on a date.

A date.

They were both giddy and incredibly nervous. Blaise was taking them ice skating, which was perhaps the most adorable thing Sawyer could think of. He hadn’t been since his dads had taken him, Del, and their baby sister as kids. He hoped he could still remember how to do it. Sawyer paused before the entryway mirror on his way out, adjusting the mustard yellow scarf Del had knitted him ages ago beneath the opening of his navy peacoat. He smoothed his hair before donning the matching mittens, and took a deep breath to soothe his nerves before apparating near the spot Blaise had told him to meet at.

The healer wasn’t hard to spot, looking cute as a button under the chocolate shop awning. Sawyer beamed as they approached, the tip of their nose already rosy pink against the crisp winter air.

“Hey, it’s so good to see you,”

He felt himself blush but he didn’t exactly know why. “And you! Godric, you’re looking so dapper, putting me to shame here,” Sawyer echoed, following up with a small, nervous giggle, “what did you want to do first?”

Blaise felt his heart rate spike in the split second that Sawyer rounded the corner. He was unused to that kind of playful thrill that went through him when he saw the other person, but it was a nice feeling. It was different. It was good.

He had almost forgotten how it felt, to like someone and to have them like you back (at least enough to agree to a date). Blaise hadn't put him out there since Rose, and that hadn't exactly ended well. 

“And you! Godric, you’re looking so dapper, putting me to shame here. what did you want to do first?”

Blaise laughed, feeling his face heat up at the compliment. "You're too sweet, really. I love that scarf, not everyone can pull off mustard," He replied with a playful little wink. 

"I thought we might get some hot chocolate, then walk over to the park," Blaise continued, motioning with a nod of his head towards the chocolate shop behind them. He had heard about the supposedly heavenly hot chocolate that the shop made. Hopefully it was a proposition that Sawyer would like, though the doubt crept into his mind almost immediately. What if Sawyer was lactose intolerant, or was allergic to chocolate? He should have thought about that before now.

"If that's alright with you, of course." Blaise added quickly. Merlin, he was blowing this.

Godric that laugh…

Sawyer had told themselves time and time again before this date that they were going to take things slow. Things were different now, he had a lot more on his plate, and he had his son to think about. It wouldn’t be fair to Basil to keep introducing new people if they didn’t end up working out. But that logic already had one foot out the window, and Blaise’s laugh threatened to have the other foot immediately follow it.

"You're too sweet, really. I love that scarf, not everyone can pull off mustard,"

Sawyer’s cheeks, already pink from the cold, darkened a bit more, but he beamed regardless, lightly touching the scarf. “Oh thank you, my sibling knitted it for me, they say mustard is my color,” Sawyer said sheepishly.

"I thought we might get some hot chocolate, then walk over to the park. If that’s alright with you, of course.”

Blaise really was quite thoughtful, clearing every step of the way before they had even gotten started. Sawyer appreciated that, he recognized himself as a generally nervous person, reassurance was one of the quicker ways to his heart. “I think that sounds perfect,” Sawyer agreed, pausing to take a deep breath, even from outside the wares within the chocolate shop were tantalizing. “It already smells so heavenly, I’m looking forward to getting to have some.”

Merlin, Sawyer was positively adorable. Every time Blaise was sure he couldn't possibly get any more charming, they did something as simple as reaching up to touch the scarf around his neck, and Blaise was hooked. No matter how many times he told himself not to get too involved too fast, it was useless. 

“Oh thank you, my sibling knitted it for me, they say mustard is my color... I think that sounds perfect. It already smells so heavenly, I’m looking forward to getting to have some.”

"Well, then, after you," Blaise replied with a grin, stepping aside and pulling open the door to the chocolate shoppe. If Blaise had thought the smells outside were heavenly, they were nothing compared to the aromas that flooded through the door as soon as it was open. Blaise didn't have a huge sweet tooth, but in that moment he had never smelled anything so delicious. 

Blaise stepped gratefully into the warm interior of the shoppe, pulling off his hat and shoving it into the pocket of his coat. There was only a short line at the counter, and before long Blaise and Sawyer were stepping up to the register. There were so many options, and Blaise didn't even know where to begin in making a decision. 

"I'll have a hot cocoa, with caramel and whipped cream," Blaise decided at last. He smiled and nodded in thanks to the woman before the register before stepping aside and turning to Sawyer. "Whatever you want, it's on me."

"Well, then, after you,”

Sawyer beamed his thanks before stepping into the shop, grateful for a reprieve from the cold. The air was warm, heavy, comforting, perfumed by the tantalizing scent of chocolate. Blaise had really found the perfect place- Sawyer just needed to not let decision anxiety grip him, a task easier said than done as he craned his head back to look at the menu. Gods, why were there so many choices? Fortunately his date was a trifle more decisive, and stepped up first to order before turning back to him.

"... Whatever you want, it's on me."

They beamed again. They hadn’t expected to be treated in addition to this. Ordinarily the things Blaise was doing- holding doors, offering to pay- the typical chivalrous things men stereotypically did for women might have made him dysphoric. He wasn’t a woman, and had spent most of their life rejecting their birth sex, but Blaise did these things so simply and effortlessly it didn’t feel gender-based at all. Blaise was simply kind and thoughtful. “Oh, erm, I’ll just do a plain hot cocoa with marshmallows, please,” Sawyer decided after a semi-awkward pause. He watched, almost fascinated, as the barista made the cocoas, they did so methodically, likely able to craft the beverages in their sleep, the seamless execution was a marvel. Sawyer could appreciate when places did things the muggle way like this. He did the same with his beloved baking. There was something more special, more personal about it when done by hand rather than a flick of the wand.

“Thank you, by the way,” Sawyer chirped as they were handed their drinks, unable to help the broad grin that now seemed permanently affixed to his face.
