March 2023
It was the first time that Maeve had ever come back. Sitting there on Nathaniel's couch, she contemplated walking out all over again. When she met Nathaniel, it had been clear to her, he was just another one of her marks, another one of her victims. Everything had gone according to plan, he had fallen for her, as hard as anyone. But, he wasn't like all the others. He wasn't an asshole swimming in money. He was nice to her, sweet, and she realised that she had come to enjoy the time they spent together. Last autumn, he had shown her all the stupid places in London that he loved so much, and weirdly enough, she had loved all of them.
But when her brother had sold Nathaniel his bookshop, everything had fallen apart. Suddenly this hadn't just been her game anymore. As always, Wesley had messed everything up by getting involved in her business. When Maeve found out, she had only stayed in London a couple more weeks. Before the end of the year, she had packed her whatever things she had at his apartment, as well as any of his valuables she could find. Which was really not all that much after Nathaniel had bought her brother's stupid bookshop. All she had taken was an envelope with cash, two watches and some other jewellery pieces that she assumed were his mother's. It was all in the bag that she had placed on his dining table.
Maeve had planned this carefully, knowing this was the time his radio show was on. She had listened to it the past two months more than she would be willing to admit. She had planned to just return his things and then leave again, but she had lingered. The way that the thought of being with Nathaniel had lingered the past months. Maybe, just maybe, she had made a mistake. Maybe Wesley had been right to put his trust in Nathaniel. Maybe for once she had to listen to her older brother's advice. And so she was still there, expecting him to walk through his front door any minute. "I kept your key," Maeve said when the door to the living room opened and she saw Nathaniel again for the first time since leaving him in December.
