❝ | The pull towards Death had never been stronger, and it repulsed Santi to no end.
He'd felt the tug towards his creator since it had been unleashed onto the world by Marianna Lestrange, though it was something that he'd been able to ignore with ease. Santi had never had the desire to follow it - he imagined that it was akin to a stubborn dog being yanked by a leash that he did not want to be contained by. At any moment, he could break the hold Death had on him and sprint off into the distance.
But now that it was fully rampaging, now that it had plans to end all non-vampiric life on the planet... Santi felt as though he couldn't rip himself away, even if he tried.
Santi had kept this to himself - even Ellie didn't know how he felt. It was a miserable existence, living with a homing beacon that wanted him to betray everything that he knew and loved. He was strong enough to avoid it... but, how long would that hold?
He'd done his best to keep busy, taking to wander the safehouses and doing whatever menial tasks he could. It was during one such rotation that he heard a familiar voice call his name. Santi's head lifted, and surprise filled his features.
"Del?" Santi asked, nearly dropping the box of healing supplies he'd been holding. The concern that filled their face, mixed with - was that relief? - shocked him.

“ Del didn't know how much longer they could go on.
It had been only a month and a half since their rescue from the Kindred that everything had gone to shit; indeed, Del had only been home a week or two before the world ended. They were still recovering in more ways than they could count, and suddenly Death was bringing destruction upon the world. They still got winded climbing the stairs to their apartment, then suddenly London was being burned to the ground. Del had taken Austen (and Austen's friend, who had happened to be over for dinner at the time) and run, finding safety where they could and taking care of the two boys under their care. When the dust settled, they had found their way back to the Children with Austen and Albin in tow, making sure the boys were safe and taken care of. They were their responsibility now, and they would do whatever it took to make sure the two were okay.
Del had never been so tired, so sore, but they continued on. They weren't much help to the Children or the Order, not in their state, but they did what they could. It involved a lot of small tasks, or larger tasks interspersed by lots of breaks and lots of concerned questions from others they were working with. Quinn had warned them to take it easy, to let the others that were left take care of what needed to be done, but Del couldn't sit idly by. Not while there was so much at stake, not when so much had already gone wrong.
That day, though, they had fallen going down the stairs of the safehouse, their legs that barely kept them upright folding like a house of cards when their heel caught on the step. Despite Del's insistence that they were find, the incident was enough for Quinn and the other healer who'd happened to be there at the time to order them to rest.
It was the last thing Del wanted to do, but they knew deep down they needed to. They had barely healed physically from the ordeal they had been through, and they knew mentally they were doing less than stellar. Nightmares kept them up more than they slept still, memories of the hell they'd been through ricocheting through them whenever they closed their eyes for too long....
At last Del relented, letting Quinn park them on the safehouse's couch with a blanket and a plate of breakfast. They hated to admit how good the couch felt, soft under their aching bones. They made themself as comfortable as they could, though the sudden appearance of a familiar smell made them perk up.
"Santi?" Del was loathe to admit they had been worried about the vampire, hesitant to admit they had grown to care for the other Child of the Moon. Some small part of them was still scared, still caught Santi's scent on the air and was transported back to the cold, dingy Kindred cell, but mostly now they saw a friend in the messy-haired vampire.
"Del?"
"You're okay." Del wasn't sure why that was such a shock to them. Santi was far from the type to go quietly. He wouldn't go down without a fight, and Del hadn't heard his name on any of the list of fallen. Maybe they were surprised to see him there; they had heard about far too many vampires that had defected, at last succumbing to Death's pull and joining his ranks.

❝ | Had they become friends when Santi wasn't looking?Though much of his focus had been on Ellie and ignoring the pull towards Death, he couldn't deny the fact that the well-being of the small, lanky werewolf had been at the back of his mind. Santi had told himself that it was merely out of obligation - he'd been assigned to care for Del when they'd been rescued, thinking that the scent of a vampire might help mask their scent and make them harder to trace. But, maybe it had been more than that.Del looked just as surprised at their concern for Santi as he did and, for a moment, they merely stared at each other. The world had been turned upside down since the last time they had seen one another, and it showed on both of their faces. They'd become world-weary in a short time - though Santi had always felt that way, the added pressure of the pull towards Death certainly hadn't helped."You're okay."Del's voice was small, but there was no denying the slight tone of relief behind their words. Santi managed a small smile, nodding."So are you," Santi said simply. "I'm... I'm really glad to see you, Del." |

“ Del wouldn't admit outright that Santino Corleone was their friend, that sometime in the long weeks Del had spent in the hospital, Santi guarding them in case the Kindred tried to reclaim what they thought was theirs, they had become even the slightest bit chummy.
At first, Del had scarcely been able to breathe with the vampire in their hospital room, fear running through them despite how harmless Santi appeared or how many times they had been assured he was on their side. But the more time they spent together, Santi keeping watch while Del rested and healed, they supposed something of a friendship had been struck between them.
Leave it to the end of the world to make Del realize they actually cared about Santi.
"So are you. I'm... I'm really glad to see you, Del."
"It's good to see you, too," Del echoed, craning their neck towards the kitchen to make sure Quinn wasn't lurking. When they were sure he had actually gone to run his errand, Del threw the blanket off their legs and rose; they were a good bit wobbly and unsteady, but they made it up off the couch, which they counted as a success. They could already feel the bruises blooming on their bum and shoulder from where they'd toppled down the stairs that morning. "I was... Were you at the masquerade? Is Ellie okay?" It had been no secret to Del how Santi felt about Ellie, the dark-haired Order member who had accompanied his watches on more than one occasion.

❝ | While there was no sunniness from Del, nor even a smile, there was a lightness in their expression that was close enough for Santi. It brought a smile to his face, at least, seeing the softness in their eyes.So they really had become something of friends after all. Gio was going to taunt him endlessly for it - big strong, bullheaded Sanit turned into a fucking teddy bear for a human and a werewolf."It's good to see you, too."Santi settled the box that he'd been holding on the table in front of him as Del peered this way and that - what they were looking for, he didn't know. He had to resist the urge to rush to the werewolf's side when they got to their obviously unstable feet. Del had always been stubborn like that, and Santi didn't blame them in the slightest. It looked like they should have been resting... but, Santi had always been an enabler at heart.Besides, Del was unlikely and not to be underestimated. Santi had no desire to piss them off and wind up on his ass as a result."I was... Were you at the masquerade? Is Ellie okay?""As good as she can be. We both were there... she didn't leap in front of any curses that wouldn't have harmed me this time, so I suppose we're making progress there,"Santino replied. He'd recounted Ellie's bullheadedness when Hogsmeade had been attacked to Del while they'd sat in the hospital room together. Even now, he smiled thinking about the woman he loved being so desperate to save him, even when she didn't quite realize why."Were you there?" Santi asked.
