❝ | Theia hadn't thought that she would, but she had mourned the loss of Aylin once the party had been over. The smoke had cleared, the day had broken, and Theia had finally allowed herself to grieve the woman that she had loved.
But, there were no tears - not for her.
The grieving process was meant to happen in stages, but it was as if she'd skipped straight over denial and into anger. Realistically, there had been denial before this, back when she had convinced herself that Aylin would never stray away from her, nor for the cause that was so dear to Theia. The process had started back then, when she'd been too blind or too stubborn to accept the reality that she had already known.
Aylin had betrayed her - and she was going to pay with her life.
Valentyna had been the one to egg her on, and had continued buzzing around her head like a mosquito. If Theia had any sense at all, if she hadn't been brainwashed into believing that Ivan was her savior and protector, she might have seen it for what it was. Val was simply antagonizing her, winding her up like a children's marching toy.
And Theia let her.
The two women had set out in the night to hunt together, as they had gotten in the habit of doing. Much of London was destroyed, burned to the ground, but that hadn't stopped the pair from stalking along the Thames that night.
"Anything?" Theia called from across the way. She'd been standing on the other side of a mostly-toppled bridge, with Val having gone ahead to sniff things out for them. Though they ran the streets, they still had to be careful - the Order and the Children were no longer pulling punches.

“ This was the world Valentyna belonged in.
They had worked so hard for this, had come so far.
London had fallen in a night, and the rest of the world was not far behind. At last, Death's image for the world had been formed, and the world was falling in line. Soon enough, they would have everything they had worked for.
All that was left was to track down the traitors to their cause, and Valentyna was more than happy to partake in tracking one in particular down. Aylin had always been the weakest of them all, but Ivan had placed his faith in the wrong person to keep her committed to their mission. Theia had let the half-vampire stray too far, and now she had to die. She had picked the wrong side. Death had made Its orders clear; anyone not with them was against them, and they were to die so the world could become what it should be.
Valentyna had poked and shoved Theia until the young vampiress had seen sense of the situation. Aylin and anyone who thought like her was a threat to correcting the world's order, and she needed to die. It was Theia's fault that she had strayed from the correct path and, now, Theia was helping Valentyna track her down.
But that was only part of the fun; London was full of stragglers, muggles and wizards alike who Valentyna was more than happy to dispatch. Carnage was what she lived for, and the ruins of the city made mirth dance in her eyes. That night, Valentyna and Theia stalked the banks of the Thames, picking through the carnage. No sign of the lost little lamb they were hunting, at least not yet.
The bridge wasn't what it had once been, with cars parked every which-way and bodies scattered among them, but it was one of the few still standing, no matter how precarious. Valentyna went first, scouting the other side of the bridge for any signs of the Order or Children. There weren't many of them left, but the few stragglers still posed a threat. Valentyna turned back to Theia's direction when she'd made sure there was nothing to worry about.
"Anything?"
"Nothing important," Val replied with a shrug, stepping over a prone body in the street as though it was simply a crack in the sidewalk. There was nothing immediately visible or apparent, but the sound of movement in a building bordering the Thames caught her attention. "Come on over, time to have some fun." With any luck, it would be the traitor they were looking for, but the scent wasn't recognizable as Aylin. No matter—they had all the time in the world. And Valentyna would ensure Theia didn't stop until she'd righted her wrong.
