❝ | There had been many times in Piper's life where she felt that things were too overwhelming to go on, but never before had she ever contemplated simply giving up.
Not until now, anyway.
Piper had little time to come to grips with watching Damien die, knowing that she needed to be strong for the war to come. The world was quickly overrun by Death and its children - they'd nearly wiped out all Muggles first, and were running rampant in the apocalypse that they had build.
And then she'd lost the baby.
It had all happened so fast, with no time to react. One moment, she'd been fine, carrying to term. The next minute, there had been so much blood, and she'd been forced to give birth to a half-formed child that had never gotten the chance to live. She knew it wasn't her fault, that her body had simply given up from the stress... but, Piper couldn't help but blame herself.
She'd lost two Damiens in the course of two weeks, and she didn't know how to cope.
Claire had taken over much of the Order duties in her stead while she recovered, a hollow husk of her former self. Piper spent more days in the room in one of the safehouses trying (and failing) to sleep. Her face had grown gaunt, body nearly skeletal. She couldn't keep food down, she could barely force herself to drink water.
She wanted to die.
Piper had been nestled in a blanket, settled in an armchair in front of the fireplace built into the wall of her room. Her dinner remained untouched, as did the bottle of water they'd brought to her - the seal still intact. She didn't look up as the door the room opened, nor did she pay the person who'd entered any mind when they settled on the ground slightly in front of her.

“ It was over. The world had ended, millions had died, and the few that were left had been dealt unimaginable losses. Friends, parents, siblings, allies... none had been safe from Death's destruction.
Out of all of them, though, Piper had perhaps lost the most.
Raphael had been there when Damian fell, had to pull Piper away from his fallen form and to safety the night of the masquerade. There was nothing left they could do for him, not anymore. And, Raphael knew, he would have wanted Piper and their child safe, no matter what happened to him.
Then, she had lost the baby, too.
Raphael had been away on a scouting mission when Piper had miscarried, hearing secondhand about the loss days later. It had broken his heart; he hadn't known Damian well, but he knew how much Piper loved him. And to lose her child, so soon after.... It was a tragedy unlike anything they had yet seen.
So Raphael stepped up. He took on what he could, helped Claire with the duties Piper usually headed. Anything he could do to help his mentor, to take on responsibilities so she could grieve. She deserved as much. He would do whatever he could, so Piper could have the time she needed.
The door's hinges creaked as Raphael swung it open, slipping into the darkened room Piper had secluded herself in for days now. It broke his heart, seeing his mentor, his friend, reduced to so little by her loss. Piper Steele was the strongest of them all, and if she couldn't withstand the carnage that had been wrought on the world, then what hope was there for the rest of them?
Piper didn't turn when he entered, didn't react outwardly in any way, but Raphael hadn't expected her to. Instead he simply made his way across the room, settling cross-legged before her on the floor. For now, he didn't say anything; Raphael wasn't sure what he would say, if he'd tried. 'Sorry's wouldn't bring either Damian back, wouldn't heal Piper's broken heart or make the world go back to normal.
"Are you still in any pain?" Raphael asked at last. He'd been briefed by the healers who'd looked after Piper on her condition, knew she was likely still in some degree of pain. He would get her pain medication, if she needed it, and anything else she might need to get better. Refusing to eat and drink, as it appeared she was doing based on the untouched dinner and water, wouldn't help, but he would do what he could. Raphael wouldn't force the food and water down her throat, but he had other ways to coax it into her.
The Piper that Raphael knew, had learned under and worked alongside, wouldn't want pity or questions about how she was feeling. Raphael would respect that. Her emotional wounds he couldn't heal, but he could at least make sure she was physically recuperating. Even if she didn't want to. Damian would want her to continue on, he knew. ❝ | Piper was exhausted from the concern of those she loved, for no amount of well-wishes or condolences would bring back the Damiens she had lost. Her beautiful, precious boys, gone too soon. It nearly ripped her in two to think of them, of what could have been before Death had ripped them both from her. Though the monstrosity hadn't been directly responsible for the loss of her baby, it was as if it had ripped the fetus from within her with its cold, clawed hand. This world was mercilessly cruel, though that was something Piper had known before this had happened. It was what had kept the joy of pregnancy dulled, what had kept her from fully committing to marrying Damien the way that he had wanted. They had to win the war first, she'd told him. She'd been so stupid to think that they had a chance at winning. She should have married him when she'd had the chance, and they should have done more to prevent the pregnancy in the first place. But, would have have made the pain go away, or lessened it at all? Piper wasn't so sure."Are you still in any pain?"The question was one out of concern, asked in nothing but earnestness. But, it was a miserable question, one that she despised with all of her being.Still, she didn't have the energy for anger.Piper shook her head, though she wasn't sure whether that was the truth. The physical pain was nearly non-existent, given the amount of pain-relieving draughts she had been given. She hadn't wanted to take them, but it was the only way she could sleep - and it was dreamless, she had found, and that oblivion was the closest to bliss Piper had found.
No amount of potions and healing salves would take away the emotional pain, though. |
