you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Marianna's world had come apart at the seams. It was deserved, she realized suddenly. It was only a matter of time before her world tore apart just like those of all the ones she'd maimed and killed. Her baby was lost; there was no way now that she'd be able to get her back and save the man she loved. Bella was safe in her current position, perhaps better off than she could be in her arms, especially now.
The main battles had begun to die down. Those that remained trapped within the walls of the grim party still attempted to fight for their lives, though some had given up and accepted their fate.
She'd found Aurelius still surrounded by his attackers, losing the fight she'd pulled him into to begin with. The vampires had turned on them at Death's command and done so gladly; they may have stood a chance together but the creatures had descended on him in a good number. She'd managed to take some of them out, killing vampire and mortal alike to get to him as he finally collapsed to the floor. He was hurt, she didn't need to be a Healer to know the blood leaking from his chest and onto the floor around him wasn't right, nor was the bend in his leg. His ivory suit was crimson, bloodied and singed as he lay there. At this distance, she couldn't tell if he was breathing.
Her hand was pressed to her side, trying to stop the flow of blood that leaked from the gash that had been Persephone Fawn's handiwork, a parting gift to her. The train of her golden dress was stained red, the sheer fabric not hiding the wound that bit and stung with every breath as she fought her way across the room. If she could get to him, then she could at the very least get him out. He didn't get to die, not when she'd been the one to bring him there to begin with.
A figure appeared in her path, the looming robed form undeniably their host. She met his gaze, her grip on her wand tightening as she stilled. He was the obstacle between her and her now dying beloved. If he was already dead, she now couldn't properly assess with Ivan's smiling face between them.
"You still have other guests to finish off," she managed, pressing her empty hand against the angry wound that tore through her from ribs to her waist. "Get out of my way."

The evening had gone better than Ivan could have possibly hoped. Just as he’d unveiled his true intention, complete with spectacular theatrics, an unexpected, yet most welcome guest had arrived. Ivan should have known that such an opportunity would not escape the notice of his Father, but to be the one to draw Death’s attention was an accomplishment that he reveled in. He’d been singularly praised for his actions, for gathering so many of its foes into such a small space- lambs led to the slaughter. He would be handsomely rewarded for this gift, but for now the carnage was its own reward. Ivan had been content to watch from the stage as the first of the attacks began, reveling in his accomplishment. But merely watching had gotten boring. Ivan had descended into the battle, killing with impunity, feeding messily, greedily. His face and hands were slick with blood, though his dark costume didn’t show the extent of his spoils. An oversight perhaps, it really would have been quite striking if he’d stuck with his initial white attire- allowing the fabric to grow crimson with time. Alas, the choice had already been made. At any rate, this would be a night that would never be forgotten. Once he was finished here, the whole of London would feel terror spurred by him. The night was young, families settling in on Christmas Eve, but only woe would be descending their chimneys that evening. He discarded his latest kill, the now drained corpse dropped unceremoniously from his grasp to the bloodstained floor. Ivan had never felt so strong, so powerful, as he did in that moment- strutting amongst the carnage, wondering where next to direct his wrath. It was then his gaze fell upon one of his more esteemed guests, she was slow, staggering. Marianna had been wounded. Pity. She could have done better. He stepped between her and Aurelius’ near lifeless form, and despite her condition she was quick to snap at him. “You still have other guests to finish off, get out of my way.”Ivan tutted, lightly shaking his head. His gaze fell to her hand at her side, the blood seeping between her fingers. Marianna smelled so sweetly… “It is a shame I didn’t have the pleasure to speak with your Mr. Raymon,” Ivan said, disregarding her order, “men who serve naught but themselves always fall hardest. Such a pity.” He looked pointedly at the wound she was still trying to hold together. MADE BY VEL OF GS

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Within the walls of her house, there had been formalities Ivan had chosen to play into, but here and with Death's command clear, Marianna didn't have those to fall back on. Earlier in the evening, she could have taken him on with ease, but her battle with the Fawns had left her wounded and she had Aurelius to consider. In his current state, he could no longer protect himself. He'd fought his battle, but the onslaught of Death's army all trained on him had been too much, so she would have to protect them both. She didn't trust Ivan not to turn his attention there and finish off what the others had begun.
"It is a shame I didn't have the pleasure to speak with your Mr. Raymon."
"An opportunity you will grow to regret," she responded through gritted teeth, her eyes flicking to his form and his fingers which still held tight to his wand. It was her fault he was here but he wouldn't die because of it. She could live with the blood on her hands, the list of people she'd slaughtered long and ever-growing, but she couldn't add his name to it. It would break her. "I think you would have found much to discuss. Perhaps another time when things are less...chaotic."
"Men who serve naught but themselves always fall hardest. Such a pity."
The angry gash that Persephone had left her with still bled and Marianna didn't have the skills to mend it. She'd been taught to maim and kill, but healing was never something she'd taken to. In this state, she could fight, but not nearly as efficiently as she would need to. She watched him as his eyes stayed there at the gash that tore through her, tracking the blood as it dripped down. She pressed her wand to her side and mended the torn flesh just enough that the injury wasn't as deep. It was still angry, still burning and bleeding, but it wouldn't hinder her as much. Her back straightened a bit, her eyes only on the vampire whose restraint was slipping.
Ivan didn't regard the man he spoke of at all; his entire focus was on her and the blood that covered her. She'd been bitten before and could remember the rush of pain and ecstasy, but she knew Ivan would more than likely tear out her throat. Or make her one of them. The thought flickered to life suddenly that there was an alternative to death in this battle, something worse.
"Words you should remember," Marianna warned as she took a step back. Her gaze moved once again to her lover's frame. She lifted her wand, casting a shield charm around him she hoped would be just enough to deter any other attackers, before she took aim at her opponent. The vampire was faster than her, and with as much blood as he was already covered in, she could assume stronger too. She'd have to let her magic do its work.
"You owe me; let me pass."

Ivan continued to casually stand between Marianna and her destination, wondering what might come of this. It seemed the disgraced Dark Lady had an unfortunate habit of digging herself into deeper and deeper holes. She could have proven herself here, rather than waste her time trying to save an enemy of Death. Aurelius too could have done well had he not been so self-serving. A pity that Ivan had observed in mortals time and time again. He should have known not to get his hopes up, Marianna had power, but she’d never use it the right way. “An opportunity you will grow to regret. I think you would have found much to discuss. Perhaps another time when things are less...chaotic."Ivan chuckled again. Only then did he tear his gaze from the tempting wound in Marianna’s side to look upon her fallen lover. He was still alive, but only just, he’d seen many on the brink of death in all his centuries, Aurelius Raymon’s time was running short. He returned his gaze to Marianna, offering a slight smirk. It was funny how she seemed to assume that Aurelius could be saved, that they would all sit down for tea or some other such silly thing when the night was over. No, Aurelius had made his bed, and now he was lying in it. And evidently his mistress planned on doing just the same. He said nothing, however, merely watching as someone who was ally and enemy both healed the gaping wound in her side, or at least attempted it. A woman of destruction, it seemed she had difficulty doing magic in the opposite direction. Ivan could have fixed it for her, but what motivation did he have? As curious as he found her, ultimately mortals meant very little to him. “Words you should remember,”Ivan’s eyes, bright and red from his recent feed, shimmered with laughter he did not lend voice to. “Oh but Marianna, I answer to Death, not just myself, surely you remember,” Ivan said lightly. He regarded her wand, pointed directly at his unbeating heart, with the same sort of amusement. Overconfidence, perhaps, but she was far outnumbered here, any misstep towards him and she would find herself in even hotter water than she already was. “You owe me; let me pass.”He considered this a moment, but ultimately relented, stepping aside with an exaggerated bow, hands gesturing to Aurelius Raymon’s prone form. “Let it never be said that I don’t repay my debts my dear lady,” Ivan said, straightening as his signature smirk returned to his thin lips, “if you wish to be repaid by being allowed to further dig your own grave, please don’t let me keep you."MADE BY VEL OF GS

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Marianna watched the vampire peel his gaze from the blood leaking from her side to survey the dying man they spoke of. Aurelius' thoughts still echoed, though they'd died from the clear roar they had been to something softer. She knew there was no chance of being in the vicinity of this vampire again without him attempting to strike her down, but the amusing idea of future pleasantries was just enough of a distraction that she was able to take a few steps to the side, moving around the obstacle between her and her target so he was at her side instead. At this distance, though, the vampire had the edge. He'd make it to Aurelius before she ever could and would kill him with great satisfaction.
"Oh but Marianna, I answer to Death, not just myself, surely you remember."
The red glow of his eyes was haunting. They were bright, full of glee even as he turned to regard her again. She stilled once more, her wand still trained at his chest. They were now in a sea of enemies; her only ally lay dying on the marble floor. She had already taken out several of Death's forces to get to this point but Ivan would prove a much greater challenge; he'd steal more than just the blood in her veins if given the chance. His voice was knowing, patronizing as if he knew already the fate that awaited her in her disobedience.
"I do, and I think it's quite a shame a brilliant mind is so wasted to be a slave."
He considered her another moment, his red eyes sweeping over her. Her wand remained steady in her hand, waiting for his impending attack, but it never came. Instead, the vampire bowed to her, his hands sweeping in the direction of Aurelius' battered body. She took a few steps in that direction before she caught his eye and the mirthful grin on his lips as he stood straight once more.
"Let it never be said that I don't repay my debts my dear lady; if you wish to be repaid by being allowed to further dig your own grave, please don't let me keep you."
Marianna knew nothing she could do would actually save her from Death's wrath. It never mattered how well she stayed in line, what orders she carried out or what powers she had; she'd been the fool who thought to control it, and she'd never be allowed to forget it. Whatever end this transgression would earn her was always going to happen, admittedly just faster than she had expected.
"He's not a part of any of this," she hissed, her grip tightening on her wand. Aurelius had always been neutral; unmarked and self-serving, sure, but she had accepted that. He wouldn't die because she'd dragged him into battle with her. Ivan was still useful to her, though. He had information on where her daughter was, and though she suspected where Eleanor was hiding her, she couldn't be certain. She would only have the chance to strike once; she needed to know where. She couldn't leave without it, he knew that too, and time was running out.
"We came and I helped in your plot; we played our part. Tell me where my daughter is and lift the apparition ward."

Ivan continued to stare down the disgraced Dark Lady, his posture casual, unthreatened. Though truth be told the vampire had yet to decide what to fully make of her. Someone who simultaneously was and was not an ally. She could have been a friend, perhaps, if she weren’t so blinded by her own foolishness. By… love? Ivan’s gaze briefly flickered to Aurelius, wondering if perhaps the great Marianna Lestrange were even capable. Aurelius was handsome, or might have been were he not coated in his own gore. Ivan tutted his tongue quietly, nearly imperceptible over the din of the surrounding chaos. "I do, and I think it's quite a shame a brilliant mind is so wasted to be a slave."His easy smile faltered, expression briefly going stern before relaxing once more into the same casual sort of ease. Ivan liked to think of himself as better than a slave, his servitude coming from a place of gratitude and thirst for power in equal measure. Death itself would always exist, would always claim the living at the end of whatever time it allowed them. Death couldn’t be defeated. Only a fool would align themselves away from it. But of course, the penalty for resistance was a grisly end, like so many around him were currently meeting, was there really much choice? It was something Ivan took pains to not linger on often. Ivan ultimately said nothing to this perceived slight, but still watched Marianna, uncertain as to what would be her next move. Ordinarily humans were predictable, but she’d seemingly developed a knack for doing the unexpected, or the foolish. “He’s not a part of any of this,”He made a small noise of amusement, a sound that couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a chuckle or a scoff. “Perhaps you weren’t paying attention, my dear lady? We’re all part of this, he chose his side, and he chose… poorly,” Ivan said, voice smooth as silk. The corner of his lip flickered upward in a brief smirk, but his eyes remained bright, sharp as they watched Marianna’s every move. “You could still correct your own course.” Ivan almost hoped she might. Marianna was a powerful witch, it would be a shame for that power to be wasted, spilled across the marble like that of her lover’s. But she was seemingly as stubborn as she was strong, a combination he recognized in himself, and wasn’t sure whether or not he appreciated drawing the parallel. "We came and I helped in your plot; we played our part. Tell me where my daughter is and lift the apparition ward."Always one to get right down to business. Ivan smiled again, his mind still a steel fortress against any attempts by Marianna’s magic to try and breach it. “I’m afraid that the ward isn’t mine to lift,” Ivan responded, still wearing that smile, and gestured broadly behind him, “can’t hardly play favorites when all against Death must perish, no?” His expression now bordered on impish. The fact of the matter was, Ivan was stalling. He had no idea where Death had hidden the babe, and given Marianna’s penchant for defiance, wasn’t expecting to have to make good on his bluff. you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Marianna couldn’t slip into Ivan’s mind to learn whatever plan he had. This evening would always end in death but before this, her name did not grace the list Ivan had cultivated. His gaze flicked to Aurelius’s still prone form behind her, and she moved still to shield him with her slender figure. He couldn’t defend himself, but she could take whatever Ivan decided on. He needed her but turning her back on the vampire would end poorly. Though his face twisted at the idea of being a slave to his master, Ivan said nothing else about the slight. Still, she’d press there if it hurt. Press anywhere to draw his attention long enough that she could make it from there to her target. “Is the truth of your situation hard for you to bear? You’re nothing but a mindless slave, Ivan. You’re in charge of nothing.” The shield charm she wove around Aurelius would be enough to keep off any returning attackers while she dealt with her vampire ally; once ally now adversary. There would be no building bridges again after this standoff, or if Aurelius died. “I’m only the enemy because I refuse to be that again; you’ll live for eternity as a coward.”
“Perhaps you weren’t paying attention, my dear lady? We’re all part of this, he chose his side, and he chose...poorly.”
The only thing Aurelius Raymon would ever choose was himself. When the time came, he’d even rid himself of her to save himself. That had always been their reality. She knew the inevitable end of their relationship was tumultuous, that it would break her heart, and she’d allow it. Yet she’d choose him in this moment because letting him die on the marble floor was not an option. He’d chosen to help her, to be with her and play to her whims, and was slowly dying because of it.
“You could still correct your own course.”
She laughed, the sound slipping unheeded through her lips as she stepped back toward her lover. If she could keep the vampire talking long enough, then she’d make it there without taking him on. In her state, regardless of what else was at stake, she knew an all-out duel wouldn’t fall in her favor, but there was no alternative that she could see. She was a powerful witch who could best those remaining in this room, but this vampire was a challenge she’d have a bit more difficulty with, especially now weak and woozy from the blood still leaking from her tender side. “With you? And what would that take in exchange? Let you slaughter him? My blood at your beck and call?”
His mind was well guarded, no matter what poking and prodding she did would break down the walls he had vuilt, and there was no time. No matter where the vampire wench had stolen her girl away to, she was at least safe there and away from this bloodbath. Eleanor would at the very least protect the girl, Marianna had nothing else to hold her to but her word and the promise that if anything did happen to Bella, Marianna would tear Eleanor apart. She’d been merciful when she’d buried Bastian, the same end wasn’t in store for any of the other vampires who crossed her now. “I’m afraid that the ward isn’t mine to life, can’t hardly play favorites when all against Death must perish, no?”
Marianna’s face fell, her body faltering back closer to her beloved. Even if she got to him there was no way she’d get them both out without being able to apparate. He was wounded, how much so she couldn’t really tell, but enough to know he’d need her to be able to make it out to the lawn. It would take all her attention. She’d been lured there the same as the rest of the guests she realized; they’d both been brought for their power, to fight and then die.
The curse was instinct, a blow to knock him off his feet, but the vampire had seen it coming and deflected it with ease. There was ire behind it as she stared him down, the first move already made.
“Go to hell, Ivan.”

It seemed Marianna didn’t need to use her magic to find the words that stung. Ivan’s most deadly sin had always been his pride, he wouldn’t stand for a mere mortal wounding it, no matter how powerful they were. He kept his expression in that same sort of impish delight, but his burgundy eyes betrayed his true feelings, flashing dangerously with his anger rather than glittering with delight as they had once been. Ivan liked to think himself a good judge of character, but apparently he had gotten Marianna Lestrange wrong. A foolish woman, too big-headed and power-hungry to see the big picture. They might have been able to be friends if she could see the forest for the trees, but she was weak in the same way all mortals were. Was she really going to be willing to throw everything away for the dying man on the floor behind her? Perhaps she was more foolish than he thought. “Is the truth of your situation hard for you to bear? You’re nothing but a mindless slave, Ivan. You’re in charge of nothing.”Ivan’s smirk turned to something more akin to a snarl. Marianna, who he had at one point considered an esteemed guest, seemed to be lowering her ranking each time she opened her mouth. And to what end? What was she looking to accomplish here? Her motivations were as much a mystery to him as his were to her. “I’m only the enemy because I refuse to be that again; you’ll live for eternity as a coward.”“You think far too highly of yourself, Marianna,” Ivan said flatly, his eyes still conveying his rage at her insults, “look around you- this, this was all my doing. Every last corpse lies here from my actions, my plan. I am no mere slave. You, however, are a fool. Risking everything for what, love of this man? Pathetic.”He merely watched as she inched closer to Aurelius, wondering what her plan was when she got to him. Until recently, he hadn’t had plans to attack her or her plus one to the party, but Marianna seemed to want to dig her own grave. Betraying Death was one thing, but betraying him was another. Her laughter at his offer to help her correct her own course was the last nail in the proverbial coffin- it seemed she was no better than her dying lover. “With you? And what would that take in exchange? Let you slaughter him? My blood at your beck and call?”Ivan looked pointedly at Aurelius. “It seems I wouldn’t have to do anything to him at all, Marianna,” he said casually, his smirk finally returning in earnest. It didn’t take vampiric senses to see how much Aurelius was fading. The Dark Lady was running out of time if she wanted to save him. But before he could address the second point, Marianna had flung a curse at him. In her weakened state it was easy to see coming, to deflect with hardly so much as a flinch. Ivan’s smirk evaporated, his mouth instead settling in a firm straight line. So this was it. The end of what could have been a wonderful alliance. What a pity. They could have ascended to greatness together, such a powerful witch would have made a queen amongst vampires should she had had her priorities straightened. Ivan’s fury was returning to simmering again, disgusted at her lack of gratitude, her lack of thought, it didn’t have to end this way if she’d not been such a fool. “Go to hell, Ivan.”Now it was Ivan who responded with laughter. His anger had seemingly boiled over to the point where he no longer paid it any mind. If Marianna wanted to be against him now, then so be it. “Ladies first,” Ivan snarled, and then he responded with a spell of his own, a simple knock-back jinx designed to put her to the ground should she not deflect it in time. you die, i thrive, and so it goes, The ire in Ivan’s eyes grew with every word. It felt good, watching the vampire’s temper flair and rise higher and higher as he kept considering her words. It was dangerous to battle an enemy like this, but keeping his attention gave her time to consider what she could do from here. Both had to make it out, there was no other option; it would destroy her otherwise. He snarled at her, baring fangs that would tear out her throat as easily as it had those he had left bloody in his wake.
“You think far too highly of yourself, Marianna.”
How many countless times she had heard that. It was an ego bred from a powerful family and connections, a personality that craved greatness, and perhaps it was even a bit true. She did think highly of herself, but she had all the capabilities to back it up. She had not lived a life of mediocrity. That wasn’t what she was born to do.
“Look around you- this, this was all my doing. Every last corpse lies here from my actions, my plan. I am no mere slave. You, however, are a fool. Risking everything for what, love of this man? Pathetic.”
“And who will get the credit for this night? Your name will not be what everyone who has fled from this building fears.”
It would be Death that got all the credit for this night. They both knew that; it didn’t matter how much of the plotting Ivan had done. All the glory was stolen from the servant the moment the master made his appearance. Ivan was just as egotistical as she was, he relied on displays like this to earn his shred of glory that he would never get.
Ivan’s eyes moved more directly to Aurelius’ form she was still attempting to guard. It was the first true glance he’d spared in her direction, but it sent chills down her spine.
“It seems I wouldn’t have to do anything to him at all, Marianna.”
She took a hasty few steps back, moving to be just a few more away. So close, but she would have to be rid of this vampire before she could render him any kind of aid and get him out. It wouldn’t matter if he died. She didn’t have her daughter, her life would be forfeit with nothing left to love. Maybe he didn’t love her, not entirely, but she had never asked for that. The vampire didn’t answer her question, merely set his mouth in a thin and firm line. The two of them stared one another down, even as he deflected the curse she had thrown his way. If he advanced, she wouldn’t be able to hold him off both of them.
They would die.
“Ladies first.”
He threw a spell her way, and it took more effort than she would have liked to send it spinning into another advancing vampire instead. If he got his hands on her, he would kill her and that wouldn’t be the worst of it. She pulled the shield she had wrapped around Aurelius forward to envelop her slender form, moving back the final few steps so that she could stand over him. If she went down, they’d go down together. Both had to leave alive. She threw another curse in Ivan’s direction, the red arch moving with ire behind it. She would have to incapacitate the vampire or get him to turn his attention elsewhere. Aurelius reached for her, his fingers grazing the train of her dress. She turned to him, watched his chest rise and fall and his fingers as they searched for his wand, for her.
Vampires could be easily bought, especially this one. Her desperate green eyes met Ivan’s hungry red ones.
“What will it take to get him out of here? Name it.”

Ivan’s gaze locked fully on Marianna, the rest of the party, the slaughter, a mere afterthought in the back of his mind. For now he had eyes only for the traitor, the failed ally. He’d killed people for less, he ought to have struck her down where she stood, but something in those wild green eyes gave him pause. Or perhaps the remembrance that Death would want to deal with her itself, slighted as Ivan may be, this was not his battle to fight. But Marianna didn’t need to know that. He signaled with his free hand, a group of Death’s vampires advanced, but when he held his hand out, the universal sign for “stop,” they grew no closer to Marianna and the foolish mortal man she cared so much for. They instead circled, eyes wild and bright from their feed, itching for more carnage. Ivan still watched only his latest foe, catching glimpses of bloodstained cloaks in his peripheral vision. “And who will get the credit for this night? Your name will not be what everyone who has fled from this building fears.”He bristled. Frustratingly, she was right. Ivan, of course, wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of conceding the point. Perhaps a part of him would be miffed later, the Children torn at the hands of Death rather than its cleverest child, but perhaps the reward his master would bestow upon him would be greater than glory for this endeavor. Ivan was a proud thing, but over the centuries, he had learned he also needed to be patient. Perhaps he needn’t worry about credit at all, this was bigger than history textbooks and legends- this, why, this was the end of the world. He said nothing to this, only eyeing Marianna stonily, quietly calculating his next move, lips once more curling into a rather sinister sort of sneer. He stood firmly, neither advancing nor retreating as his attack was deflected to one of the minions he’d summoned to encircle the pair of humans. There would be more where that one came from. There were always more. Ivan could see the haggardness in her stance as she adopted her pitiful shield charm, standing over the man she was willing to risk so much for. He deflected the curse she sent, the power behind it enough to jar his wand arm, like the recoil of a gun, as he sent it careening into the thinning crowd to their left. It struck violently, though Ivan cared not whether it hit friend or foe, only that it hadn’t hit him. He tutted his tongue, lightly shaking his head, and then took his first step forward since this particular display had started. Only one. But one seemed to be enough. Marianna was cracking, he could see it, and the woman then all but confirmed his theory. “What will it take to get him out of here? Name it.”Foolish, foolish, foolish woman. After that display she expected to be able to buy his leniency? He uttered a short series of barking laughs. The nagging thought of this being Death’s battle prodded at him, and his laughter died quickly- though the sparkling of its ghost still lingered in his eyes. He might not be able to end this the way he wanted, but he could still stand to gain from here. “And what might you have to offer, Madame Lestrange?” Ivan purred, taking another small half-step forward, wand at the ready should she strike again, “your gold doesn’t interest me, my coffers are quite full as it is. What are you willing to do to spare him, hm?” He had ideas of his own, but he was having far too much fun toying with her to make this a quick bargain. MADE BY VEL OF GS

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, They were entirely out of options and the slaughter was closing in. Marianna had been struck with bouts of hopelessness all her life, but never had it settled so heavily in her chest. This was her fault; he never should have been there. In the grand scheme of things, it didn’t matter if she’d had support or not as her attendance was more or less mandatory, but he’d come just for her.
Her heart had been so guarded, a token kept only to herself, but somewhere in their torrent relationship she’d let him have one of the biggest shares of it. It was by no teaching of her mother, or her father, or anyone else that had crafted her into the weapon she had become that she would protect him. Perhaps only her aunt, who’d protected those she loved above anything else, had shown her that this was the only choice she had. There was a much worse fate waiting for her should Death’s army get their hands on her, but the idea of what that could be would only sink her further when she was already drowning.
The vampires around them stilled, held off by Ivan’s single command. This was what they were really up against, and sooner or later this would have all played out. Perhaps to a different tune but this was inevitable. They accounted for every detail except this one, so sure of themselves that the idea of dying here had been nothing but a laughable offense neither dared voice. She turned to face the vampire lord before them, the others a mere afterthought against this new enemy.
Only weeks ago, they shared drinks, sitting across from one another in her home; how things had so quickly changed based on his master’s words.
He seemed stunned by the force of her magic, the spell’s recoil into a different opponent leaving relief to shine on his face. Ivan wasn’t entirely scared of her, not wounded and so distracted as she was now, but he was still wary of her. Since she couldn’t see into his mind, that would have to do. He took another step forward, the glee still shining in his eyes as he did. He threw his head back and laughed, and she took the moment of gloating to move to her lover’s opposite side, his form between them now so her back now stayed shielded from the biggest threat. The battle had stopped, only to pick up should its most powerful players try again at their duel. Aurelius was still breathing, though it was ragged and weak; he lifted his hand, pressing it against her still bloody side with all the force he had left.
“And what might you have to offer, Madame Lestrange?”
What did she have? In any other case, she didn’t have to make bargains for things. Her magic, the sheer power she could wield, left nothing of her opponents. This wasn’t a normal fight, she wasn’t on even ground anymore, and he knew that. She wasn’t just fighting to save herself, but it wasn’t even her she was concerned with.
“Your gold doesn’t interest me, my coffers are quite full as it is. What are you willing to do to spare him, hm?”
Even she didn’t know all the treasures that lay within the Lestrange vault, but as he said, she couldn’t buy her way out of this. She glanced down at her lover once more, her eyes meeting his before trailing to his bloodied hand. That was worth enough to buy a vampire and their freedom.
She whispered some kind of reassurance into his flickering thoughts before her gaze lifted to the vampire. All she had to do was get close. “Give you what you’ve been craving since the moment you set foot in my home,” she said as she rose, steadier on her feet than before. Maybe her job of healing had helped more than she thought, or the dizziness had become so normal she couldn’t truly feel it anymore.
“He leaves here alive, and you’ll have a taste of the most powerful blood in the world.”
