Ivan presents himself as whoever he needs to be, when he needs to be it. Centuries of life have granted him a deep understanding of how people work, and how best to manipulate them, which he uses fully to his advantage. Ivan is well-spoken and charming, crafting personas to adopt and drop on a whim, concealing the sinister man behind them. biography Born near Kyiv in 1422, Ivan had a humble beginning to his life of extravagance. The youngest of four children, and the only son, had him in a place of honor in his parents' eyes. They were poor, but put all their available resources into their son, convinced that he would bring them to wealth with his intelligence and aptitude for magic, which displayed itself at a young age. Ivan was sent to Durmstrang, whereas his sisters forewent formal magical education, as was common at the time. At the institute, Ivan excelled, finding a particular knack with alchemy and dark magic. Upon graduation, Ivan began an apprenticeship under a reclusive alchemist. He was quick to begin to forge gold with which to carve himself an elegant lifestyle, forgetting entirely about the promises he made to repay his family's sacrifices. Ultimately his greed led his mentor to sever ties, a mistake which proved fatal for the old wizard. At only twenty years old, Ivan murdered the man who had once been his teacher out of bitterness, ransacked his laboratory, and set out on his own in Russia. He worked tirelessly to improve his craft, and the wizarding world at the time began to take notice, granting him the opportunity to rub elbows with influential and powerful people. He enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle, though failed to marry and settle down in his human days. It wasn't until his early sixties that he began to take notice of how he had aged. Ivan could have been content with pursuing the Elixir of Life, but vanity refused to allow him to become even older physically. Ivan sought out vampirism actively, eventually finding a widowed countess in Romania with the affliction, willing to infect him in exchange for gold and marriage. Reluctantly, Ivan agreed to her terms, though was unprepared for the reality of having a sire. The countess exerted her will over him forcefully, the alchemy which he had once used for his own gain diverted to instead fill her coffers. He lived as her husband, her prisoner, for nearly a century before he was able to break the bond, and the countess suffered the same fate as his mentor a lifetime ago. As he had before, Ivan cleared her treasury and fled once more, giving himself a new surname and beginning over again. Embittered and looking for the power he had lacked, Ivan began a pattern of seducing and turning a lover who caught his fancy. Each met their end at his hand when he grew bored of them, and he would uproot again to avoid catching blame for a suspicious death. Only one of his more recent lovers was of note, as their coupling resulted in a rare, born vampire child-Ivan's daughter, Valentyna, born in Israel in 1940. Val became the only person Ivan had truly cared for aside himself, and he wondered if perhaps he could settle for once. Ultimately, Shoshana proved too soft to raise a proper vampire, Ivan did away with her, his third fledgling, to mold his daughter in his own image. The pair traversed much of eastern Europe and the mideast together, Ivan parting with her only when she became of school age, and sent her to Durmstrang where he had gone to school. Ivan looked west after the conclusion of the Second Wizarding War, settling himself in England and purchasing a pub in Knockturn Alley-the clientele proving to have use both in feeding and in information. He built his influence slowly and steadily through the early 2000s, his reputation drawing other vampires to him, forming a coven out of a tangle of lovers, Ivan grooming each to do his bidding. The emergence of Death intrigued him deeply, his centuries of age making the pull to his creator quite strong. Death became the only being Ivan had willingly answered to, using his ironclad mind and vantage point of his pub to deal information, commanding his coven to do the dirty work. In a decision that still enrages him, Ivan sent one of the newest of his coven to the Battle of the Ministry for the Elder Wand, in which they perished at the hand of a member of the Children of the Moon. Ivan had had his eye on the insurgent, wolf-loving group, but had never expected them to be of real threat. Determined to show them what they were dealing with, Ivan approached them to join, with the guise of having a change of heart, while in actuality began to spy on the Children to feed information to Death and the followers. It is a dangerous game that Ivan plays, but it’s one that he’s good at, and he’s determined to see them fall.
