you die, i thrive, and so it goes,
Her baby would come home.
As Marianna prepared for Ivan's impending party, that fact forced her to put aside her reservations of working with the vampire. He needed her there and she needed his information. Though she had long suspected her child's father, and by associate his vampire harlot, had taken her child, it had been Bastian himself who had given her the information in full.
Now all she had to do was take her and the vampire would help her. He was, as they'd agreed on, in her debt.
As she worked through the evening, attempting to get her plans in order before the fated evening was upon them. She wanted to have every possibility accounted for. They couldn't take any chances with her daughter in the balance, and since she'd specifically requested Aurelius to join her, she wouldn't have anything happen to him either.
A commotion downstairs drew her attention and she rose from her desk just as one of the elves appeared in the study with a sharp crack. "Master Arcturus, mistress."
Her cousin tore into the room, almost barreling over the elf had the creature not already apparated out of the room. He looked disheveled, not the mostly put together young man she knew. He favored one leg as he stood before her, and she could see the edge of some kind of bandage that was wrapped around his arm. He'd been in some kind of fight, and she went about the task of discovering exactly what had happened as she poked around in his mind. Ransom and his sister, that quiet one Sonia, had taken it upon themselves to go after her cousin. In his own house no less, and though she didn't pick through all the details, she knew enough.
It was the look in his eyes that took her aback. She didn't approach, waiting as she still took him in. Arcturus had, mostly, been on her side as a child. They'd tormented Orion together, called him names and teased him, and while the two hadn't gotten along always, he'd never looked at her with the ire he did in that moment. Orion had in every day of their adult lives but never Arc.
"I'll kill them both," She voiced, finally surging forward to close the space between them so she could see his injuries up close. "It was Ransom, yes? I knew he was stupid but I didn't think he was this kind of idiot."

“ Attacked, in his own home. It was a stark reality in this world, one Arcturus should have prepared himself for when he moved back to the Lestrange Manor. There were countless people with a score to settle with the Lestrange name. Former Death Eaters who saw him as a traitor to the pureblood cause. Innumerable enemies of his father's who, since they couldn't get to the man himself, would no doubt settle for one of his heirs. Really, there was no shortage of people who probably wanted Arcturus dead.
But never had Arcturus thought it would be because of Marianna that he'd almost died on the floor of his home. He had thought by keeping Marianna as close as he had, within arms' reach but just barely, whatever ruin she would wreak would be reserved for people other than himself. He thought he would be kept safe from the carnage that perpetuated itself everywhere his cousin went. But no—the chaos of Marianna's madness had at last reached the people closest to her. First her daughter, and now Arcturus.
Arcturus was still uneasy on his feet when he apparated to Marianna's manor. He was still uneasy on his feet, favoring his left side, though he had stubbornly refused the cane the healers had suggested. For the most part he was healed up, bandages covering some of the deepest wounds, but besides the black eye blooming brilliantly across the left side of his face and an obvious limp, he looked as good as new. The casual observer might not have even been able to see that he'd nearly bled out on his floor a few days prior.
As bad as he felt, though—it still felt a bit like he'd been hit by a truck—he had a score to settle.
His knock on the front door of Marianna's manor was a nicety at best; the house elf didn't even have the chance to fully open the door before Arcturus was forcing his way in. "Where is she?" He demanded. The house elf pointed meekly towards the study, and Arcturus needed nothing more.
"I'll kill them both. It was Ransom, yes? I knew he was stupid but I didn't think he was this kind of idiot."
"Don't touch me," Arcturus snapped, taking a step away from Marianna. There were a thousand different things he wanted to say to his cousin, a million different things he ought to have said long ago. "This is your fault. Out of all the terrible things you've done, Marianna, I had always hoped I wouldn't be another casualty of your hubris."

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, "Don't touch me."
Marianna had barely begun her approach before her cousin reared back. She paused, hesitating on the rug in the middle of the study as her cousin snapped at her. He'd never spoken to her like that. Orion and Marianna had gone back and forth their entire lives. Arcturus had only ever been a bystander when the family tempers flared. Her face twisted in a look of distaste though settled quickly. It was hard to keep herself under control at the best of times but her cousin had been through enough. He, it finally appeared, had inherited the same bubbling anger as his older brother and cousin. Without a mediator this time, she knew things could turn ugly very quickly.
"This is your fault. Out of all the terrible things you've done, Marianna, I had always hoped I wouldn't be another casualty of your hubris."
Her fault? Plenty in the world was Marianna Lestrange's fault; the actions of a powerful woman tended to leave marks, however good or bad. It was her fault Death was free, and it was because of her her daughter was missing. Yet, she had nothing to do with whatever had transpired between her cousin and her former pupil. Ransom was most certainly an idiot, one who would pay severely for this final transgression, but she had not directed him toward Arc in any way.
"My hubris? Last I knew, my dealings were kept far from involving you. Ransom Flint makes his own decisions; this had nothing to do with me," Marianna said sternly. There was a forced calmness to her voice, learned from her years as a professor. She no longer had control over that boy, though she could still hand out his punishment for this slight. She turned, moving back toward the desk she had previously occupied.
"Lay the blame at my feet if you like but our name alone, outside of me, puts you in harm's way."

“ Marianna looked at him with what Arcturus could only call the measured restraint of a teacher dealing with an ornery student. That only served to make him even more angry; she was treating him like a child, like someone who couldn't handle himself and who didn't have every right to be angry. It was typical of his cousin—the moment one did not bend to her whim or bow out of the way, he was a problem, one she would deal with in whatever way her twisted mind saw fit.
"My hubris? Last I knew, my dealings were kept far from involving you. Ransom Flint makes his own decisions; this had nothing to do with me. Lay the blame at my feet if you like but our name alone, outside of me, puts you in harm's way."
Arcturus had to laugh at that, shaking his head. It was a scoff, nearly, but a dark chuckle all the same. "Nothing to do with you? If it hadn't been for you and your meddling in that boy's life, he probably wouldn't even have known my name. You twisted those children's minds, played with them like puppets, and assumed it would never come back to bite you in the ass, Marianna. You know it, I know it," Arcturus replied. His anger had been tempered by his outburst, returning to a simmering inferno deep within him. After growing up between his cousin and brother, Arcturus knew how to keep his anger out of reach of those who could feed on it and turn it against him. Now, it boiled just below the surface, close enough for him to grad hold of if he needed it again but died down enough that he would likely not have another outburst soon.
"I never cared what you did. It's your life. As long as it didn't affect me, you could do as you pleased. Burn the world to the ground, if you want, just leave me out of it." Arcturus had always felt that way, even as two of the most important people in his life took two drastically different paths. Orion, towards the Order and the Ministry and what could be considered the life of an upstanding citizen. And Marianna, towards the Death Eaters and the world of their parents. So long as they left him out of it, let him do as he pleased, he had never cared what they did. He just didn't want to be affected by any of it. It was selfish, maybe, but the world could burn around him so long as he and the people he cared about were spared from it.
"I've always known that what my father did and what our name is would put me in the path of people who wanted me dead, but Ransom and Sonia Flint did not break into my house because I am a Lestrange. No, Marianna, that blame lands squarely on your shoulders."

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, "Nothing to do with you? If it hadn't been for you and your meddling in that boy's life, he probably wouldn't even have known my name. You twisted those children's minds, played with them like puppets, and assumed it would never come back to bite you in the ass, Marianna. You know it, I know it.” Marianna stared at her cousin from her seat at her desk, fury blazing in her eyes. No one had ever understood why she’d become a teacher. It had never been her sole intention to twist the youth under her guidance. Everyone had placed that expectation on her; they’d watched her like a hawk for the entirety of her tenure. It didn’t matter how much she worked to improve herself and her image. She had only taken those under her wing who had wanted to be there for one reason or another. Vitoria, Ransom, and Noa had all had their own asparitions that had aligned with her. In the end she’d decided it was easier to fold to the expectations rather than keep fighting them. The army that had been left to her needed its leader, and she was made to do just that, no matter how poorly it had ended.
“I never made them do anything; they followed their ambitions and claim I led them astray.”
"I never cared what you did. It's your life. As long as it didn't affect me, you could do as you pleased. Burn the world to the ground, if you want, just leave me out of it."
There is was, the expectations set upon her once again. She never wanted to destroy the world, only make it how it should be. It only proved despite their close relationship that her cousin didn’t know her at all. Arc would never understand her, maybe he never had tried. Her hand closed around her glass to keep her from moving for her wand instead. The last thing she wanted was to duel her cousin in her own house.
"I've always known that what my father did and what our name is would put me in the path of people who wanted me dead, but Ransom and Sonia Flint did not break into my house because I am a Lestrange. No, Marianna, that blame lands squarely on your shoulders."
She sat at her desk, her face twisted before settling into a blank mask. She had learned long ago to shove her emotions deep down, all the hurt at every betrayal buried so even she couldn’t see it when she looked at herself. Her green eyes shimmered, with tears hot with rage that disappeared as she blinked. She had her own issues to try and mend, her daughter was out in the world alone, and this was what she had to deal with instead. Her cousin was a liar; she was used to them. His name was Lestrange after all.
“That’s enough,” she said finally, her voice quiet but firm. It was expected for her to sit and rage, to yell as mad people did, but Marianna had not lost her mind. She was calm, collected, scarily navigating her anger instead; emotion was a weapon to weild just like any other.
“You think I’m a monster, your point has been made,” she said. “You’re just like the rest of them; either do something about it or get out of my house.”

“ “That’s enough. You think I’m a monster, your point has been made. You’re just like the rest of them; either do something about it or get out of my house.”
Arcturus shook his head. He'd said what he wanted, and it hadn't had the impact on his cousin that he'd been hoping it did. One last bone to throw her, in hopes that she might, for once, see that she had made mistakes, and acknowledge them. But no. Marianna Lestrange was nothing if not unapologetic.
"I don't think you're a monster, Mari. That might be how the world sees you, but I know you. You're my cousin, and I love you, despite everything," Arcturus said at last. No matter how angry he was with Marianna, no matter how much he had been put through in the name of being a Lestrange, he did love Marianna. But he was starting to doubt whether Marianna had ever loved anyone but herself.
With another shake of his head Arcturus turned, deciding he might as well just leave. He'd come, he'd said his piece, and that was that.
But something else was nagging at him. Something Arcturus couldn't leave without getting an answer to. He stopped in the doorway to the sitting room, turning back to regard his cousin. When he spoke next his voice was soft, sad. Like he already knew the answer.
"Do you even care, that I could have died?"
