You said, remember that life is Not meant to be wasted We can always be chasing the sun Not everything had gone exactly to plan with the kidnapping of Emma Fernsby. Thalia hadn’t minded the initial outcomes, after all, things could get messy when you hired a hitman to do the job. But really, she’d hoped that Emma would have a bit more information. It seemed that her deaf prisoner didn’t have a great sense for what her two sisters did with the Order. Or was a master of deflection, though Thalia doubted that. They’d been through a lot over the past few weeks, her and Emma. At times, Thalia had played nice, bringing Emma food and water in exchange for tidbits about Claire’s work with the Order. Other times, of course, she was a bit rougher around the edges. Thalia hadn’t been overly gruesome, just had lightly pushed Emma around to get her to be a little more forthcoming. So sure, there were some cuts and scrapes, but she truly saw herself as quite benevolent. Due to her own home’s proximity to Piper Steele’s, Thalia had opted to move Emma after just a few short days stationed there. Thalia had stayed close with Marianna Lestrange, and informed her that she was welcome to talk to the prisoner herself in exchange for a place to keep her for a while. It still wasn’t clear exactly how things would play out between Thalia and Marianna, but it was an interesting arrangement for the time being. Thalia found herself sitting in the dungeon of the Lestrange manor, lazily talking at Emma in the wee hours of the morning when the wards went off. That was odd- there were rarely unexpected visitors here. They went off a second time, two visitors. Thalia stood, listening for signs of movement from upstairs where Marianna was sleeping. Instead, she heard the sounds of scuffling in the back garden. Marianna was awake and fighting back, no doubt. Thalia drew her wand and stepped out from the little cell where Emma was kept, walking a few steps just out of sight to the bottom of the cellar’s stairs. The wards tripped a third time, letting her know that someone was definitely coming down here. Only one person would’ve been bold enough to coordinate this, so Thalia crouched just out of view of the stairs, waiting for her opportunity to attack Claire as she came down. A few minutes passed before the door creaked open. Smiling, Thalia jumped out and cast a quick stunning spell at her victim. As it was blocked, she raised her eyebrows in surprise to see that it wasn’t Claire Fernsby at all, but rather her wife, who was creeping down the stairs. ”Ah, Genevieve,” she said with a glint in her eye, wand still leveled at the other witch. ”I didn’t expect that it would be you.”MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ Gen hoped there were no vampires lurking in the dungeon of Marianna Lestrange's manor—her pounding heartrate alone would have surely given her away.
When Claire declared she had developed a plan to rescue Emma, Gen had jumped at the opportunity. She couldn't imagine what Emma was going through, but if the recently-rescued Children and Order members were any indication, it was nothing good. That Del person from the Children had been practically dead when they were rescued, and Gen was intent on helping in any way she could to make sure Emma did not suffer a similar fate. The sooner they rescued her, the better.
Still, Gen found herself seized by anxiety as she, Olivia, and Claire prepared to infiltrate the manor. This was her first truly dangerous meeting; so far she had only done scouting missions and helped with strategy. She liked it that way, and she knew Claire rested easier knowing she wasn't regularly throwing herself into firefights.
But Emma was family. Gen would do anything to get her back.
The plan was simple, yet its simplicity made it ever the more complicated. Claire and Olivia would enter from the back of the estate, alerting Marianna to their presence. Claire would focus on dismantling the wards, so they could escape when they found Emma. Olivia would keep Marianna occupied, with Claire's help if it came down to that. Gen, meanwhile, would wait before entering the property. She would enter from the side, towards where Marianna likely kept her dungeon. Hopefully, Marianna would be preoccupied by then, and Gen would be able to slip inside and find Emma, and be out before the lady of the house had any idea.
Gen could see the first bright flashes of light that signaled Olivia and Claire's trespassing on the property from a distance. There were spells coming from both directions. Marianna was outside and fighting back. This was Gen's chance.
The dungeon was, surprisingly, easy to find. The Lestrange Manor was a bit of a maze, but Gen was descending the stairs before long. The sounds of Olivia, Claire, and Marianna going at it above still rang out clear. Gen was in the clear for now, but it was impossible to know how long her window would remain open.
As soon as Gen eased the door open, though, a stunning spell was being shot at her. Gen deflected it easily, an unlit lantern behind her shattering into a thousand pieces. Gen had been fairly adept at dueling in school, and she'd been working hard with Claire in the past months to ensure she was as good as she could be.
The person standing at the other end of the wand that had fired the spell was one Gen had never expected to see there. Surprise flashed in her eyes, but she did her best not to let it reach the rest of her expression. Thalia Tomaras had been an ally; Gen would have even gone as far to call her a friend. To see her here was another in the long line of betrayals the Order had suffered by now.
”Ah, Genevieve. I didn’t expect that it would be you.”
"I could say the same to you, Thalia," She replied, keeping her wand similarly raised. She cast a nonverbal shielding charm, getting ready for whatever other spell Thalia might be preparing to cast at her. Gen didn't move much quite yet, shuffling a few more feet into the room and letting the door partially shut behind her. Over Thalia's shoulder, Gen could spot a dark silhouette in one of the cells, but it was impossible yet to tell if it was Emma or not. "I'm afraid you've found yourself in possession of something that doesn't belong to you." december 20, 2022 ● 627 words ● Genevieve Sue fernsby-Alighieri★ dandy ♫

Emma wasn’t sure how long it had been, the only indication of the passage of time she’d gotten since being relocated to this cellar was the growth of her hair- now a good deal longer and shaggier than she preferred it. Or would have preferred it, if Emma could feel much of anything at all anymore. She’d learned that cooperation with Thalia meant survival here, but what she was clinging onto for was beyond her. Even if she ever got out of here, the life she’d used to have was gone. Sareena had to have been buried by now, a funeral held without the love of her life. The thought sparked the first thing close to real emotion she’d felt in a while, but it was short-lived, fading into the haze of her high just as quickly as it had come. Weak-minded, it hadn’t taken much prodding by Thalia (though she still wore the wounds in various states of healing from said prodding) for Emma to spill the little she did know- including, regrettably, the addiction she’d once overcome. The only time Emma had fought was the first time Thalia had forced the potion into her, she’d tried so hard to avoid that familiar warmth, that familiar floatiness, but a quick retaliation from her captor put her into place. Now Emma took each vial without complaint. What was there to stay sober for now anyway? At least the potions dulled the pain, sometimes even let her drift away to sleep without the nightmares… That was, until Thalia decided she needed something. Which she had that evening. Emma found herself nudged awake by the toe of a boot, the potions made her slower, but compliant, and she shakily sat herself up. Her head was aching, her body grown weak with a fever that had set in. The cold, dampness of the cellar combined with shallower breaths when she was high hadn’t been doing her lungs many favors. Thalia questioned and probed for what felt like hours, Emma’s answers slow and labored and peppered with coughs that ached her chest. Thalia stood up suddenly, alerted by something Emma hadn’t noticed, but she was both too weak and too high to care. It wasn’t as if there were anywhere for her to go- she lived her days chained to the wall by a shackle around her ankle, her tether just long enough for her to reach the row of dangerous plants Thalia had her tending. Poisonous vines, creeping tendrils, carnivorous flowers flourished under the glow of the sunlamps- Emma found herself staring at them vacantly in Thalia’s absence. She caught spellfire from the corner of her eye and reacted slowly, delayed by sluggishness of potion and illness. What was going on? Emma peeled herself from the floor, staggering on leaden legs to try and find a vantage point. Thalia’s back blocked her view, but the wand at the ready was telling. She’d given up hope of any sort of rescue after being moved to Marianna Lestrange’s manor, and truthfully, as the days stretched on, she’d started not to want it. Her sisters would be better off without her, and when she outlasted her usefulness, Thalia could simply get rid of her. It was longing for release of death rather than freedom from captivity that was her motivator. Life always had a funny way of keeping her in it. Sensing a duel might break out, Emma retreated back, sinking heavily onto the low bed on the floor to stay out of the crossfire. She held her head in her hands, hacking coughs shaking her entire torso. Why was anyone risking anything for her? MADE BY VEL OF GS

You said, remember that life is Not meant to be wasted We can always be chasing the sun Being a double agent for the Kindred had been rather fun, but Thalia wasn’t sure she was really ready to give it up just yet. Being in the Order for so long had been a source of pride, plus had provided her the sort of respect Thalia was accustomed to amongst the leaders of the Kindred. She’d taken a risk by taking Emma Fernsby, but it didn’t have to mean the whole thing was over already. If she wanted to, she could salvage it still. ”I could say the same to you, Thalia.”Fortunately, Thalia came with a built-in excuse. Her twin. ”Cute that you think I’m Thalia,” she commented with a little smirk, casually casting a jinx that bounced off the shield Gen had already cast. Good, Genevieve had come prepared for a fight. Thalia would prefer a bit of fun before dispatching the attackers or ditching the place entirely. She’d do whatever suited her, as it was clear that Emma wouldn’t provide too much further information. ”I’m afraid you’ve found yourself in possession of something that doesn’t belong to you.””And you think it belongs to you instead?” Thalia countered with a little smirk. She backed up slightly to allow Gen a view of the figure behind her. Emma was already cowering in the corner, coughing up a storm. Thalia had actually planned to work on that today- the stupid girl had gotten sick from the cold of the dungeon. But no matter now, it was a minor detail. ”So, you’re finally going to fight a battle yourself?” Thalia taunted as she fired off another spell in Gen’s direction. ”I’m surprised, but good for you.” Thalia stood firmly in Genevieve’s way, just a few feet from the stairs, and still a dozen or so feet from Emma’s little cell. She reached her non-wand hand out with a smile directly at Gen as she extinguished the lights. ”Good luck.”MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ ”Cute that you think I’m Thalia. And you think it belongs to you instead?”
Gen narrowed her eyes at Thalia. She was vaguely aware that Thalia had a twin, though Gen had never met her. This could be Melina, or this could be Thalia lying to her. Whoever this was, though, she was standing between Gen and her sister. Melina or Thalia, she was the enemy, and Gen would be damned if she let her win.
The shield Gen had constructed was strong, and Thalia's spells bounced off harmlessly, occasionally striking a collateral wall.
”So, you’re finally going to fight a battle yourself? I’m surprised, but good for you. Good luck.”
"I think you will find that I am willing and able to fight my own battles. It just takes a lot to piss me off," Gen replied coolly. She liked to think of herself as a pacifist most times, but when it came to her family or her wife, Gen was willing to do whatever it took to make sure they were safe. That included, Gen realized in that moment, killing Thalia, if it came down to that.
A split second later, the room was overcome by darkness. Gen's breath hitched and she took a step back, then another, until her back was against the wall. She could inch her way along the wall until she reached the cell where Emma cowered. It would take a long time, especially if she was fending off attacks from Thalia, but it would be better than Thalia getting behind her and getting the drop on her.
"Lumos maxima!" In the split second of illumination, Gen frantically scanned the room. Something about whatever spell Thalia had cast made the darkness inky and hard to penetrate, and Gen saw frighteningly little. "Incarcerous!" She fired the spell at the general area where she had last seen Thalia and hoped for the best. december 20, 2022 ● 317 words ● Genevieve Sue fernsby-Alighieri★ dandy ♫

You said, remember that life is Not meant to be wasted We can always be chasing the sun Thalia flicked spells lazily at Gen’s shield, just biding her time as she wore down the spell. Gen was a powerful caster, judging by the strength of her shield. Thalia found herself a tad impressed, though she was maintaining her focus for the moment. Keeping Emma wasn’t necessarily the top priority, though Thalia was still hopeful for more information. Perhaps if Emma couldn’t supply that, Gen could instead. ”I think you will find that I am willing and able to fight my own battles. It just takes a lot to piss me off.””Now, tell me,” Thalia commented with a dramatic pause. ”Is this your battle, Genevieve? Seems like it’s theirs.” Thalia gestured vaguely toward the outside where she assumed Claire, and perhaps even the third sister would be. As the light disappeared from the room, Thalia took a step to the side, casting a few trip lines across the hallway between where Gen stood and Emma’s cell. ”Lumos maxima!”As soon as Gen cast the spell, Thalia pulled the light into her free hand, shaking her head. ”Don’t be daft,” she muttered, though she immediately realized that speaking would give her position away. Fine, she might as well work with what she had here, and make it take Gen as long as possible to get to her objective. Thalia began spinning up the light she’d caught off Gen’s spell, a little glow beginning in her hand. ”Incarcerous!”Genevieve hadn’t quite figured where Thalia was standing, so a slight move to her right caused the spell to miss Thalia completely. Thalia rolled her eyes, opening her hand to allow the light to rush out. A brilliant white light completely filled the space between them, causing spots even in Thalia’s own vision. But she used the distraction to her advantage, running back toward Emma’s cell. She pulled it open, the bright light helping her see the way. Emma was crouched in the corner, cowering in fear, and still high from earlier that day. Thalia grabbed her by the arm, hoisting her up and in front of Thalia and pressing her wand against Emma’s throat. She tugged the ball of light toward her, shrank it down to a little glowing light in front of her and Emma as Genevieve looked on. ”You want her?” she asked, a gleam in her eye from the dimmed light. ”Tell me something good or she dies here.”MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ ”Now, tell me. Is this your battle, Genevieve? Seems like it’s theirs.”
"The moment I married Claire, they became my family. This is as much a fight as it is theirs. What, are you trying to convince me to give up and join your cause? Not a great way to start, not that you'd be successful even if you tried," Gen replied, squinting in the darkness and trying to make out something, anything that could potentially be helpful. She inched forward a few more feet, reinforcing her shield charm even as Thalia peppered it with hexes. She was ironclad in her resolve, and nothing was going to stand between her and Emma.
Gen fired her binding spell into the darkness and hoped for the best, but a split second later she was blinded by a painful light. For a moment she saw spots, and by the time she was able to focus again, Thalia had moved into the cell and grabbed Emma and pressed her wandtip to her throat. Emma barely reacted, which, coupled with the coughing Gen had been witness to when she'd first entered, wasn't a good sign. What had Thalia subjected her to?
”Don’t be daft. You want her? Tell me something good or she dies here.”
Gen narrowed her eyes, weighing her options carefully. There was little doubt in her mind—whether unfounded or not remained to be seen—that she could best Thalia in a duel. But Emma was caught in the middle, and the last thing Gen wanted was to hurt her sister-in-law more than she had already been.
"And how do you expect me to believe you are a woman of your word, and won't just kill her regardless?" She asked at last, words measured and even despite the way Gen's heart raced. She had known this would be dangerous, but this was a danger different than she'd expected. Gen was willing to die for Emma, and she would do it in a heartbeat, but Gen didn't know how she would live with herself if Emma died before her eyes. "You Kindred aren't exactly known for being people of honor, after all. You'll have to forgive me for not trusting you unconditionally." Gen decided not to mention that she knew next to nothing about the Order and its workings; she was still relatively new to the alliance, and Claire took great care to keep her out of harms' way and keep her from being the next person taken by the Kindred and tortured for information. She inched forward a half-step, wand held at her side and ready.

Suddenly, the light was gone. Emma pressed herself further into a ball, fear it seemed was the only thing that could break through the dullness of the potion. Since the day Sareena had died, Emma couldn’t stand the dark. It reminded her of how that strange man had trapped them in their greenhouse, where her fiancee would meet her end. Was he lurking here again too? Whomever had come to her ill-advised rescue would need to look out, but Emma couldn’t even begin to voice a warning. Panic had seized her throat in an iron grip, she could barely breathe, let alone scream. Her cough and her fear left her gasping for air. She held her knees to her aching chest tightly, wanting nothing more than for all this to be over. Whoever had come needed to leave, Emma would take the brunt of Thalia’s anger about it, but she wouldn’t let anyone else die for her again, she couldn’t take it. As suddenly as the light had left, it returned tenfold. Emma squinted, unable to see through the brightness, as if she were staring at the sun. Blinded and deaf, she recoiled when Thalia seized her arm in an iron grip, having had no warning the contact was coming. Of course, she hadn’t even been able to tell it was Thalia until she finally was able to blink the spots out of her vision. The light had been dimmed and her world returned to a hazy sort of focus. Emma hung limply in her captor’s grasp, putting her feet under her felt like too much work. Sweat beaded her brow, she licked her chapped, cracked lips. Emma looked up at her attempted savior, eyes glazed over, the left one swollen halfway shut. Gen? If Gen were here then Claire couldn’t be far behind. Emma wanted to scream, tell them to flee while they still could, couldn’t they see it was a trap? But the words were too hard to find as another coughing fit rattled her ribcage. Gen was saying something, not to her, or at least Emma didn’t think so. It was only then that she registered the wand pressed against her throat, but that failed to strike fear. Maybe Thalia would finally grant her mercy, let this hell be over… “Gen, go,” Emma finally croaked, though it lacked the urgency it needed, and she doubted her sister in law would listen anyway. What, are you trying to convince me to give up and join your cause? Not a great way to start, not that you’d be successful even if you tried.”Thalia snorted at this, though she didn’t respond as she planned her next move. As if she’d try to convince someone to switch sides. People were free to do whatever they wanted, in her view at least. Thalia just didn’t mind if that freedom came with some consequences. And consequences could be quite dire if you crossed the wrong people. Which Claire certainly had, and Gen was towing that line as well. ”And how do you expect me to believe you are a woman of your word, and you won’t just kill her regardless?”Thalia chuckled at this, watching how Gen froze once she realized the position she was in. Stupid Order types, always freezing when their loved ones were in danger. ”I don’t expect you to believe me,” Thalia replied coyly, a smile coming across her face, lit by the remainder of the light in front of her. ”But I doubt you’ll just let her die for nothing.””You Kindred aren’t exactly known for being people of honor, after all. You’ll have to forgive me for not trusting you unconditionally.”There she was, on her little soap box once more, touting about how the Kindred couldn’t be trusted. ”So many assumptions, hmm,” Thalia commented, tutting softly as she pushed her wand more firmly into Emma’s neck, waiting for Gen to make a predictably bad move. They never could make things easy, could they? ”Gen, go.”A little croak from her captive, at last, still coughing up a storm. Instead of going, Gen moved a half step forward at the sound and Thalia shook her head softly. ”You should listen to your sister-in-law,” she commented. ”Diffindo,” she muttered quickly, tracing a line on the side of Emma’s neck that began to quickly pour blood. Not in any place that would kill her, of course, just a little show of force and a reminder that Thalia’s next blow could be much worse. MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ ”I don’t expect you to believe me. But I doubt you’ll just let her die for nothing.” “Gen, go,”
"Not without you," Gen said, shaking her head. Whether Emma was in any space to read her lips, she had no idea, but it needed to be said. She wasn't leaving that cellar without Emma.
”You should listen to your sister-in-law. Diffindo."
Gen's eyes widened as the blood poured from Emma's neck, rage clouding her vision a split second later. It was an unfamiliar emotion for Gen; she didn't let a lot get to her enough to make her truly angry, truly full of ire. Her grip on her wand tightened until her fingers started tingling and going numb. Her jaw set.
It was one thing to threaten Gen, to threaten her family and hurt the people she loved. It was another thing entirely to punish Emma, who had never hurt a fly and would never dream of hurting anyone, for the actions of another. Gen would trade herself in an instant, let Thalia hold her captive and torture her for the rest of her days, if it came down to it.
Or at least, she would have up until the moment Thalia uttered the curse and blood started pouring down Emma's throat. Now, Gen was out for blood.
"Let her go. You want a fight, then let's fight like civilized people. No tricks of the light. No holding an innocent woman in front of you like a shield. You, and me." Gen's words were all but growled. Perhaps she wasn't being completely rational, but she was competent in her abilities. She could take whatever Thalia threw at her. "I'll tell you whatever you want to know, or you'll be carried out of here in a body bag. Your choice."

Emma looked up at Gen from her awkward angle, dangling in Thalia’s grasp. The fuzzy quality to the world hindered her ability to read lips, the words Gen spoke were lost on her, but the shaking of her head was impossible to miss. Damn stubborn Gen, she must have already been around Claire for too long to be able to dig in her heels. Emma didn’t want to be saved, not at the cost of her sisters- in-law or otherwise. What was there for her to even return to anyway? The life she had was gone, it wasn’t worth anyone risking themselves over. Why couldn’t they see that? Presumably Thalia said something in response, but facing away from her captor Emma was fully in the dark about whatever it was. But she didn’t need to hear anything to feel the cut opening on the side of her neck. Were she sober, not weak from a high fever, she might have been alarmed at this. Thalia had tortured her, smacked her around a bit, but never anything that had drawn blood, or broken bones. It was chilling, or would have been if she had the capacity to care, maybe there wasn’t a line Thalia wouldn’t cross. Emma only managed a slight flinch, a response to the sharpness of the pain that cut through the dulling effect of her high. The blood oozing down her flesh felt warm, maybe the first real warmth she’d had in a while. Her hand shakily found a trail of it that had already snaked down to her chest, she looked at her reddened fingertips passively before letting them fall. It was strange, almost, seeing her own blood on her hands, last time they’d been coated with Sareena’s… A garbled sort of cry between a gasp and a wail fell from her lips, triggering another series of side-burning coughs, the cut at her neck giving a painful twinge with each hack. “Gen… please,” Emma began, the words slow and clumsy from her mouth, the sentence hung there, unfinished. Emma wasn’t even sure what she was going to ask, only that the room was spinning, spinning, spinning… The reluctant, awkward stance of her feet failed as her knees buckled beneath her. You said, remember that life is Not meant to be wasted We can always be chasing the sun ”Not without you.”Thalia chuckled slightly as Gen practically whispered the promise to her sister-in-law. What must it be like to have that kind of conviction, to have someone you were that afraid to lose. There wasn’t a soul in the world Thalia wouldn’t leave behind if it meant she could live. Her own preservation would always be first and foremost, that was only practical. Genevieve, Emma, Claire, all of them were foolish and naïve for risking their own lives to try to save each other. It would only hurt all of them. As her neck was slashed, Emma barely managed a flinch, still too dulled by her own potions to be entirely aware of what was going on around her. Poor dear, Thalia really had tempted her too much with her old habits. She almost could have felt bad for the girl and how weak she was. Except for the fact that it was her own fault, her weakness. Thalia hadn’t felt that way in a long time, she had taught herself strength from a young age and she wasn’t looking back now. ”Let her go…You, and me. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know, or you’ll be carried out of here in a body bag. Your choice.”Gen wavered back and forth, first begging Thalia to let go of her helpful little shield and fight like someone with nothing to lose, and then attempting to threaten her. Thalia started to laugh, amazed by how stupid Gen thought she was. It was typical really, an Order member wanting a fair fight like they didn’t know the world wasn’t fair. Thalia opened her mouth to tell her off, but then out of nowhere, Emma dropped to the ground. ”Gen…please.”Thalia yelped, more in surprise than pain as Emma buckled. Her prisoner pulled her down a bit with her, but Thalia managed to let go before her own standing was compromised. Perhaps she could’ve held Emma aloft, but the effort of it would’ve certainly given Gen an advantage. No matter, this was what the other witch wanted anyway, right? Well then, a fight she would get. ”One on one it is,” Thalia commented, tutting slightly at Emma’s felled form, now crumpled on the stone and dirt floor between them. Thalia stepped to the side, just far enough not to be behind Emma but close enough to prevent Gen from getting to her first should she try. ”You did say you wanted me without a shield, didn’t you?”She rushed at Gen, blinking out the light in the room as she did so, enveloping all of them in darkness, the only remaining light the tiniest of glows in her non-wand hand. Just enough so Thalia could see the shield Gen haphazardly put up to defend herself. Thalia smiled and at the last second, she swerved, darting to Gen’s right and slashing across her non-wand arm so a wound significantly larger than Emma’s opened up there. Thalia threw some of the light back into the room, grabbed the wrist of Gen’s now-injured arm and tugged it hard behind her. She pressed her wand into the back of the other woman’s neck, a grin coming across her face at her own triumph. Twisting the arm further and yanking it up, she watched with glee as the gash widened and began pouring blood. ”You know, I didn’t ever promise to play fair.” MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ Thalia was good. The slash across her arm had been enough to distract her for just a split second, but that was all Thalia had needed to wrench the injured arm at an unnatural angle, pinning Gen against her. Thalia's wand tip at her throat was enough to keep Gen from struggling too much, at least at first. She largely ignored the cut on her arm and the blood seeping from it; the adrenaline coursing through her made it practically painless.
”One on one it is. You did say you wanted me without a shield, didn’t you? You know, I didn’t ever promise to play fair.”
"You're a coward," Gen growled, teeth gritted. For now, there wasn't a lot she could do without getting herself killed, though her wand remained tight in her hand. Thalia would be just as fast to kill her as Gen would be to fire a curse to break free. "Too scared I'll beat you to play on even ground. But that's all you Kindred, isn't it? You know you can't win playing by the rules. You're no match for the Order unless you cheat, you lie, and you tip the scales in your favor. You're weak."

Gen could die, and as long as Emma came out the other side relatively unharmed (at least, no more harmed than she already was), Gen would be okay with that.
