❝ | The masquerade had been a trap - in hindsight, everything about it had reeked of betrayal. She had never trusted Ivan, though she had been certain it was due to the prejudice against vampires that she'd gained through her time within the Death Eaters. If she had only followed her gut, maybe she could have done something to prevent the brutalization of the Order and the Children.
Mostly, however, she was angry.
She would forever be loyal to the people that had tried to help her father, that had given her a place to go when she'd needed it most. They, however, had been fighting a losing battle from the beginning. Verona wouldn't have bowed to Death, just as they hadn't... but, there had to have been more that could have been done.
Now, the world was in ruins, and there was no one but the Order to blame.
She respected Piper, she did... but, Verona was furious that any of this had happened at all. If people hadn't trusted Marianna Lestrange in the first place, if people like Piper and Vitoria hadn't cowed to her influence, then this would not have been happening. There would be no Death, there would be no cataclysmic, world-ending event.
There were pockets of people trying their best to salvage things, but London had fallen rather quickly. It was a pile of ash and rubble, smoldering still from the fire.
There had been so much fire.
Verona was making her rounds, checking on those she cared about. After her family, Minjun was first. She'd been to his lab once or twice before, allowing him to pull samples of her blood for experimentation as promised. It hadn't taken her long to get there - in the sun, there was little that could be done against those still alive. The Kindred were busy hunting the important Order members that had gotten away down, and the majority of the vampire followers couldn't roam free in the day.
Verona picked her way through the discarded cityscape. Minjun's building was still standing, if only just - but, she doubted that his basement lab had been touched. She moved around back to the entrance to the cellar, knocking on it. Her wand was perpetually drawn now, and she glanced over her shoulder and swept the area with her eyes before turning back towards the door.
"Min, it's me. You alive down there?"

London was burning, and it had been for days.
Minjun had not been at the banquet where the chaos had originated, but one did not have to have been there to bear witness to the chaos that had followed. For the first time, Minjun was grateful to his workaholic tendencies for keeping him from attending a social event. As the city burned around him, with werewolves and mudbloods being murdered in the streets, he had been safely locked away in his laboratory, working on Chen’s latest harebrained scheme while his partner had been somewhere else. Minjun rarely knew where he was these days, and he wished it did not concern him as much as it did. He would like to continue pretending that when his stomach had dropped in fear upon hearing the first screams, the terror had been for himself and not for Chen and Opal. It would be easier if it had been, knowing they did not feel the same terror for him.
They had not visited. He’d understood, at first. They had sent messages, reassuring him that they were alive, and busy with managing to piece together what still stood of their society. He would not pretend to know what their work entailed, and he did not doubt that it was difficult. He himself barely wanted to step foot outside his own door, at least not without the protection of someone influential such as his partners. And yet even then, he doubted that it would be enough. Min had not thought that he would ever regret his outspokenness for halfbreed rights, and his blatant association with the likes of Amir Dhanial. Now though, trapped in his former sanctuary like a rat in a trap, he wished he hadn’t put such a target on his back, knowing now that no one would be coming to save him. He wished it didn’t hurt so much to realise.
When he heard the knock on the door, his heart jumped into his throat. Finally, they’d come to see him. They wanted to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything and to see with their own eyes that he was still standing. No more patronus messages, or surreptitious calls through the Floo, he would be able to see both of them with his real eyes. His ribs ached as he leaned the crutch against them, but he did not care, so wrapt in his excitement he did not think to be suspicious as he opened the door. Only it was not who he’d been expecting at all.
“Verona,” He greeted, trying to mask the surprise. It was not as though he was not happy to see her. On the contrary, it was an immeasurable weight off his shoulders to know she was okay. But the surprise was present nonetheless. “You’re alright, thank Merlin. What are you doing here?”

❝ | When Minjun finally answered the door, he looked just about as Verona had expected - bewildered and tired. The bags that were usually well-concealed under his eyes had darkened and deepened with the state of the world, and there were lines in his face that hadn't been there previously. He leaned heavily against his crutch as he peered at her, seeming both relieved to see her as well as irritated that someone had shown up to bother him."Verona. You're alright, thank Merlin. What are you doing here?""Making sure you're alive," Verona replied. "I'm glad you are. Has anyone else come to check on you?" she asked, peering past him. The lab seemed empty other than him, in disarray from whatever experimentation Min was doing inside. Her eyes flickered back to him, studying him before darting behind her. She glanced warily about the area, grip tight on her wand, before she returned her attention to Minjun."Can I come in? I doubt there's anything to be concerned about right here, right now... but, what can I say? I'm paranoid," she said.(tagged)⏤ yang minjun (WORD COUNT)⏤ 181 words (notes)⏤ sorry it's so short! |

Had anyone else come to check on him? It was a simple question, and likely not one that Verona had meant to be funny, yet the corner of Minjun’s mouth curled up at the side wryly all the same. It was a question that he himself had been wondering about for a while himself. He knew that Opal and Chen were busy. He understood, he knew that as politicians they were doing anything and everything to handle the situation at hand. But politicians or not, he would have thought they’d cared about him enough to at least make sure he was still alive. Sure they’d sent patronus messages, however those worked only in one direction. Had they just assumed he was not responding? Did they even care to notice that they had not yet heard from him?
Of all the people to check in on him following the disaster, he had not anticipated it being Verona. He loved her, she was one of the closer friends he’d made in his time in London. Yet he’d only known the woman for a few months, and seen her only sparsely during that time. His lab partner, whom he worked with daily hadn’t bothered. It probably wouldn’t have hurt so much if he had not deluded himself into thinking that just maybe, Chen cared about him beyond his contribution to their work. That was his own fault, though, and he was the one who was going to have to live with that.
“Yeah, yeah, come in,” He sighed, taking a step to the side to allow Verona inside before locking the door behind her and limping his way back to his chair. His knee ached, and he gritted his teeth against showing weakness. He might trust Verona, but weakness was the last thing that either of them needed right now. “It’s just been me since the first night, but there hasn’t been much to report thank god. And yourself? What happened to you?”

❝ | Verona didn't miss the wry half-smirk that quirked the corner of Min's mouth upward for a split second. In the short time that they'd been in each other's lives, Min had spoken a bit about his lab partner and the woman helping to finance everything. She hadn't been able to pinpoint just what the nature of the relationship between the three of them was - not that it was any of her business - but it was clearly soured by their lack of caring for Min.It wasn't fair - he didn't deserve it. Verona was immeasurably happy that she was the one to come see him, given that it was apparent that others that he cared about hadn't. That was their lot in life, it seemed: monsters like them didn't have the luxury of true friendships, not really. They had each other, at least, though that was probably a pathetic way to look at things."It’s just been me since the first night, but there hasn’t been much to report thank god. And yourself? What happened to you?”"Just me, for the most part. I'm... actively trying to avoid the stupid fucking safehouses that have popped up, what little good the Order did to stop this mess," she replied. Verona shuffled inside, moving towards one of the work stations and peering at the work that Min had splayed out upon the desk."I was at 'Ground Zero,'" she said, using air quotes with her free hand. She still had her wand in her other, more out of habit than anything else. "Barely made it out, but it's getting harder and harder to kill me it seems. Just the way I like it, frankly."(tagged)⏤ yang minjun (WORD COUNT)⏤ 284 words (notes)⏤ <3 |

The longer that he looked at Verona, the more apparent it became that something was different. When he had first met the young woman, she had been guarded. Understandably so, given how much she had been through for someone so young. He would have been more concerned if she was open and bubbly. But once through the shell, her heart had been kind. She was as lonely as he had been and it showed, once he’d earned her trust and she had earned his, they had both been like scared children grasping at connection for the first time, terrified of it slipping through their clumsy, inexperienced fingers.
But now the softness that she had carried with her seemed to have dissipated. In its place was a coldness that had not been there before, and a month ago it might have scared him. Whatever she had seen that night at the party had changed his friend, and he was not entirely convinced yet whether or not it had been for the better. But the difference did not make him balk like others might. No, instead Min was intrigued. It was as though she were one of his projects strewn about the lab. He wanted to take her apart, see what made her tick. He wanted to know what had made her sharp, and he wanted to replicate it.
Minjun knew that he was broken. Not in the ways one might expect from looking at him, but something more integral. Something deeper, more psychological than anything that might have been wrong with his body. He knew it, as did those around him, and for that they treated him as though he were fragile even on his best days. But now, as the wold came burning down around them, he had been cast aside and forgotten. No, Minjun had no problems with being broken, but he wanted to do it in a way that was sharp. When they came back to scoop him up like a pretty toy that had been forgotten, he wanted to cut the fingertips that had dropped him in the first place.
“I can imagine,” he scoffed, sinking into the relative comfort of his office chair. “You’re a survivor, you’ve made that very clear to just about everyone. Which begs the question: why did you come? I know a social call probably wasn’t the only thing on your mind. If you just wanted to see if I was alive, you would have sent a patronus. So what is it?”

❝ | Verona had been under scrutiny for the entirety of her life. Her father had been the Boy Who Lived and, as the eldest child of the Chosen One, she was obligated to do something great with her life. She'd always hated the pressure that had come with it, had nearly buckled under it when she'd been in school. How did she know that the people around her truly admired and loved her for her? How could they, when she had such big shoes to fill? And she'd been proven right, time and time again. The only success she'd had that was her own was when she'd found Damien, when he'd helped her realize that her potential in the sport that she loved was so much bigger than her father's legacy. But even then, the press had managed to make her career about her father, and Death had only helped that when it had murdered him in front of her at the World Cup.Marianna had latched her claws in because of her strength and name, and had ruined her.The werewolf that had taken Josie from her had nearly taken her life, and had made her into a monster. With Minjun, that scrutiny turned to strength. When he observed her, it wasn't from the eyes of someone full of judgment. It was through the lens of someone who understood her - perhaps even better than she understood herself."You’re a survivor, you’ve made that very clear to just about everyone. Which begs the question: why did you come? I know a social call probably wasn’t the only thing on your mind. If you just wanted to see if I was alive, you would have sent a patronus. So what is it?”Verona didn't hesitate."I want to be the monster that they fear. I want to tear them all apart. Every single last one of them," Verona told him coldly."Make me a monster, Min. You're the only one who can."(tagged)⏤ yang minjun (WORD COUNT)⏤ 331 words (notes)⏤ <3 |

Had it been anyone else, Minjun might have minded the ulterior motive in coming to see him. The fact that there was always something that people wanted from him instead of him simply inspiring their care and affection just based on who he was as a person was an issue that had long plagued his insecurities. But Verona was an exception. Since he had met her, he had known that she was different from most people. She had been through so much, and it was rare for her to find someone like himself, someone who had been through as much, just in a different flavour. She might have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth, the daughter of the Chosen One, but she had cut her tongue on that spoon early, and had not stopped bleeding since. Minjun knew well how it felt to bleed.
Verona coming to him for help did not mean that she didn’t care. It did not detract from her desire to see him alive and well, in fact, he would argue that it was a testament to the level of trust that she held for him. After all, it was a risk for anyone to be out and about these days, but especially for someone like Verona. She had a target on her back a mile wide, and coming out here must have been a risk.
“You know what you’re asking me isn’t anything small,” He looked her up and down once again. She was strong, he was sure she could handle it. Her body could probably withstand more than what his could, and he had had no qualms in doing his own experiments on himself. Yet there was another risk here, that being what might happen if things went wrong. At least up until this point, he had not had to worry about anyone other than himself getting hurt, as evidenced by the rune scars cut into his flesh hidden under his clothes. He was lucky that Verona’s sense of smell was not developed enough to smell the old blood. “Once we start, there’s no way of going back.”

❝ | Just as she had hoped, there was no trace of judgement or fear from Minjun. He regarded her with the same look that he always had - with passive curiosity, perhaps even a little admiration. He was currently the only person alive who understood her - Damien had been the other. She had considered what her former mentor might have thought about her decision, given his affiliation with Piper. He'd not wanted to be involved in the war just as much as she hadn't, though his love for the leader of the Order had prevented him from truly staying out of it. In the end, he'd lost his life for it - yet another thing for Verona to hate the Order for.He shared the same mindset that she did with the world, that, after a certain point, it was beyond saving. It deserved to burn. Verona took comfort in knowing that he'd shared that thought process with her. But, would he have wanted her to become a monster to make it happen?Verona wasn't sure... but, he was dead now. It didn't matter."You know what you’re asking me isn’t anything small.”Verona nodded, watching Minjun as he watched her."Once we start, there’s no way of going back.”"I know," Verona said. With her assertion that she was ready, Minjun nodded tersely at Verona and gestured towards the most empty of the many tables scattered across the room. It would serve their purpose for now, though his lab was hardly set up at the moment for human experiments. That should worry him, he could feel it in the back of his mind. He should be concerned, he should look at the dismal conditions of what he was working with, and he should have some second thoughts about this whole thing. But he locked eyes with Verona, and he saw the fire burning there. It would not be dissuaded so easily, and neither would his own. What right did the elite of this world have to tell them about what they could or could not do? What could they possibly know that he did not?
All he had before this was research. It was extensive, to be sure, and tested in just about every way that he could possibly imagine. If performed correctly, the experiment would enhance the already present werewolf characteristics within an individual. He’d always intended it for himself, as a means of healing what little of his body he possibly could. Had he not been promoted, he would have tried it by now. But things had all happened so fast, and he knew it would be a risk to show Chen and Opal. Merlin knew it was hardly an ethical practice, they would have shut him down in a heartbeat, and he’d been too cowardly to test it on himself in case things went wrong. But now… Now he had Verona, who was strong and able bodied, there was nothing to suggest that her body would reject the treatment.
“There is a chance that this might still go wrong,” He warned, as he paced around the room ro collect the components he needed for the spell. The effort was exhausting, and he found himself doubled over coughing for a solid minute or so before he was able to catch his breath. He pretended he did not see the red that stained the back of his hand as he wiped his mouth and returned to her side. “But if done properly, you will be more werewolf than human.” He continued, using a small nub of chalk to sketch runes around her on the table. All the components arranged, he took a step back, book in hand. Only once he received her confirmation once more did he begin the incantation, and prayed that it would be alright.
