the invitation to ivan alucard’s birthday party had been a welcome, if not slightly unexpected, surprise. as a relatively new member of the order, trinity didn’t expect anyone to know or even care about her quite yet. despite what her brother may have thought in the fantasy he conjured up, she was still rather low on the totem pole. still, she was more than happy to go celebrate the birthday of one of their members.
once she stepped foot inside the manor, she was hit with a rush of familiarity. though pureblood functions were already ever this celebratory, for the past few years she had been attending them in her parents’ stead. something about the atmosphere inside the manor reminded her of those galas. perhaps it was the elegance of the masks and formal wear, which provided some distant anonymity. perhaps it was the sheer number of people; ivan was certainly a well-loved man, if the guest list was any indication.
either way, trinity stepped into the familiarity with a soft confidence as she wandered among the party-goers. she saw phillip across the hall, though he looked away before she could smile. ignoring the bite of that, she instead engaged in conversation with a few other order members that she knew from the ministry. as the evening pulled on, she looked about for their host. whispers indicated she wasn’t the only one who hadn’t yet spot him, likely lost to the troves of masked faces.
so, she let herself relish in the refinement. her choice for the evening had been a lovely form-fitting black cape gown and a golden filigree mask decorated to appear like flowers and leaves. even with her heels, unfortunately, she was still a good bit shorter than most the crowd. though it helped her in weaving in and out of the masses, it made it incredibly difficult to spot anyone she knew. after a few conversations and spinning around in circles, she instead dove for the outer edge of the festivities to reorient herself.
with a barely-touched glass in her hand, she settled on the outer recesses. trinity gave a polite smile to the stranger looming beside her - really, does everyone have to so ridiculously tall? - and fixed her gaze on the crowd ahead.
then, she did a double take. the eyes clicked somewhere in her memory and then everything else quickly followed, a rush of feelings pulling a pleased, although confused, smile to her lips. “ransom. i did not expect to see you here, though i can’t say i abhor the familiar face. how do you know ivan?” she paused, before nudging him a bit with her arm. “it’s good to see you.”

❝ | Tonight was the night.Ransom had been dreading this event for much of the last few months, his conscience fighting with his survival instincts.Though, when wasn't that the case anymore?Ransom eternally felt like a rat in a trap with the Kindred. He knew that this was the future that he was destined to live, what with all of the brainwashing that Marianna had done. He was not a good person, was not destined to be the hero in any narrative moving forward. Ransom was stuck in a loop of negativity and fear. But, sticking with the Kindred was his only way to survive... and now, it was the only way to save Corvus. His brother had gone and done what he didn't think was possible...But, that wasn't important now. If he thought about it, Ransom knew he was going to upset himself all over again. He needed to be on guard, needed to be fully alert..."Ransom."Ransom stiffened at the sound of a familiar, feminine voice. He glanced down, the rest of her words lost on him.Trinity."You shouldn't be here," Ransom murmured, voice wavering. No, she couldn't be here. Not now, not with....Ransom reached out, grabbing her hand, pulling her away from the crowd and toward the door."You need to leave. Right now." |

she had been trying to have a friendly conversation, but trinity was startled with the abruptness with which ransom ignored the attempt. not only ignored it; she was floored by the abruptness with which he grabbed her hand and began to quite literally yank her out the door.
now she was not the most stunning conversationalist, but merlin knew she was not that bad.
“you shouldn’t be here,” he had said, before pulling her in tow without anything to say in the matter. if she really wanted to create a fuss, she likely could have, but the determination that settled along his brow brought concern to her own. “why not? ransom, what are you doing?” she whispered, awkwardly smiling at the passersby before he tugged her around another group.
she stumbled along, struggling to keep up with him.
“ransom.” she demanded his attention again, sterner, but with no response. just more tugging.
finally, she got something. “you need to leave. right now."
the moment they stepped out into somewhere not entirely flooded with people, the frustrated boiled over and she yanked her hand out of his grip. “ransom!” she snapped, before taking a step closer to jab his chest. “what is your problem? i was just trying to enjoy a decent conversation with you, because gods forbid i enjoy your company. why are you being so-” she clenched her fist a bit as she stared up at him.
once she got a look at him, she hesitated and the anger deflated slightly. the frown deepened. “can you use your words? please?”

❝ | Ransom could sense the hesitation within Trinity - though, to her credit, she allowed him to pull her along. He was blind to the eyes of the others around him, though he was certain there were more than a few who found his behavior suspicious. It didn't matter anymore, not really. If there were Kindred members or Followers of Death that wanted to out him for having a friendship with Trinity, so be it.Maybe it would be better if he were dead, especially if it meant that she wouldn't be."Why not? Ransom, what are you doing? Ransom."There was a forced politeness, a desire to save face... but, if he knew Trinity the way that he thought he did, then it wouldn't take long for her to fly off the handle. Ransom continued to pull her along until they were out of earshot of most of the crowd. When they finally stopped, he wasn't surprised at the ferocity in which Trinity pulled herself away from him. Ransom peered down at her as she stepped forward, finger poking his chest accusatorily."Ransom! What is your problem? I was just trying to enjoy a decent conversation with you, because gods forbid I enjoy your company. Why are you being so-"As she glared up at him, she seemed to realize the level of seriousness of the situation. She settled, face softening."Can you use your words? Please?""It's a trap," Ransom murmured, voice low. His eyes flickered back and forth before he pulled her closer to him. They were flush against each other, and he forced her to sway with the music. This was a risk - more than that, it was suicide if he was found out. But, of all of the regrets that he had, Ransom didn't want Trinity's death to be among them."He's going to kill everyone. You have to get yourself out." |

"he's going to kill everyone. you have to get yourself out."
trinity was careful not to let the complete horror show itself on her face. if what ransom said was true, and she had no reason to believe it to not be, then the event here would be nothing short of a slaughter. she was quiet for the first few moments of being swept into the dance, letting him guide her as she processed the gravity of his words.
even from here, she could see countless faces she recognized. piper and her husband were somewhere in that crowd. so were milo, aelizia, zekiel- so many people that she had considered allies, if not friends. how had this many high profile names in one place not drawn eyes? how had she, with all of her goddamn auror training, not seen through this?
completely unconsciously, she felt her fingers clench around the fabric of his sleeve. this was going to be like that night at hogwarts all over again. she and alastor had to stand up in front of the students and tell them that it was going to be alright, despite the uncertainty and dread. though it hadn’t been nearly the worst in regards to casualties this past year, it had been what she had remembered. the night she couldn’t be enough. that same dread was sinking into her bones, now, finding root deep beneath her skin.
“ivan? why would he do that?” she kept her voice steady and painted on a smile as a few eyes fell onto them again. smile, trinity, and no one will suspect a thing. “he’s a prominent member of the children, that would be devastating for the alliance. it’s completely barbaric, not to mention out of character.”
the smile didn’t reach her eyes as she looked up to him, watching as she let her analytical mind take over. the desperation in his tone frightened her. “ransom,” she whispered, the uneasiness coloring her tone. “why would he do that.”

❝ | Trinity's eyes widened, but her gaze didn't find Ransom's - not at first. It scanned the crowd, settling on figures that she obviously recognized, that she cared about. As she pinpointed individual people in the crowd, undoubtedly imagining their demise as much as he had been until he'd found her, the horror grew more palpable. She wasn't causing a scene, and Ransom commended her for that. How was one supposed to react when they were told that the people they cared about, that they themselves were being served up like sheep to the slaughter?Trinity's grip on his sleeve tightened and it broke Ransom's heart in a way he didn't know how to handle. He'd failed at keeping Corvus safe, had failed at keeping himself safe. Maybe this was his redemption. Maybe, just maybe, Trinity could get some people out, and he could feel some semblance of peace knowing that he'd made it possible. The cynical side of him, however, screamed at him for believing such fantasies, for even entertaining them in the first place. He was no hero, he was no martyr. "Ivan? Why would he do that? He’s a prominent member of the children, that would be devastating for the alliance. It’s completely barbaric, not to mention out of character.”Trinity mustered a smile that haunted Ransom, as if someone were pulling up her cheeks with wire and hooks."Ransom, why would he do that?""He's been playing both sides," Ransom told her. "He's been lying to everyone. I don't even know if he plans to let the Kindred out alive. He's said as much, but I don't trust him. Once he gets here, it will be too late - you need to get yourself out now."

hopelessness surged through trinity as she and ransom danced, spun along in some bullshit frivolity that she had foolishly enjoyed only a few minutes prior. what was she, one woman, to do in a situation such as this one? suddenly, she felt her age. twenty years old. twenty years old, with a whole life ahead of her and dreams that felt so small. she, in fact, had never felt as small as she did, her weight sinking into ransom with each passing moment. one singular, selfish thought swarmed her sensible mind:
she was too young to die.
then, as though she couldn’t feel any worse, ransom continued to speak. the words she understood quite simply, but she didn’t understand the why hidden behind them. why did ivan wish the slaughter of so many? why would he have gone to the other side? why would ransom-
her eyes slid up to connect with his in time with the profound pity that surged through her. ransom was a member of the kindred. her friend, her- whatever he was, was a member of the kindred. she had always known his family’s allegiances were not with the order, but she hadn’t dreamed of a world in which the man dancing with her would align himself with a group as monstrous as that.
she could not believe it. she would not believe that he was just like the man who had orchestrated this evening. her lips pursed, and with them, her resolve hardened.
“we need to get ourselves out,” she corrected, fixing back on a flirtatious smile. “you are going to lean down and whisper something in my ear, and then you are going to act as though you are pulling me off into a room. we’ll apparate out to my flat, and from there, i can call upon the ministry.”
she tossed her gaze over her shoulder at the rest of the party. most the order higher-ups were nowhere near her. she couldn’t think of tracking them down: she simply hadn’t the time.
trinity quickly locked her eyes back on ransom’s. “you are going to live to give me one hell of an explanation, ransom. whisper, now.”
please.
