biography for most of evander's childhood, he wished to be seen. he was born the oldest child to isadora and victor selwyn, who conceived him out of wedlock a few months before their wedding. though this may not have been an issue for every family, the two were purebloods; at the very least, it was considered improper. as such, the circumstances of his birth were kept a secret. having a bastard for a son would tarnish the selwyn name, and that simply couldn't happen. so, even as an infant only faulted with coming too soon, evander started his life hidden from the public eye. soon after evander came adella, the first girl of the family and the first one to be paraded about the pureblood community. alastor followed a few years later, and evander slowly began to realized that there was something fundamentally different in the way he was treated by his family. many things made him unsuitable for the selwyn name; he was meek rather than strong, intelligent rather than charming, and all around a less-than-ideal candidate for the traditional heir of a pureblood family. this was something he was chastised about for most of his childhood, all but confined to his room in the manor. one of his biggest tormentors ended up being his younger brother. though he wanted, desperately, to fit a role that pleased his parents- he couldn't. instead, he counted down the days until he was able to leave home. while attending hogwarts, his parents arranged for him to go by his mother's maiden name: burnes. it was common enough as to not draw eyes, so his relation to the selwyns remained almost entirely unknown. while at hogwarts, evander discovered alchemy. even before it was technically a class he was allowed to take, he was teaching himself. there came a respite in learning. knowledge wasn't something anyone could take from him. socially, he fell into the same pitfalls that kept him hidden from the pureblood community. though he suffered some bullying as a result, he learned that by keeping to his studies he was able to find peace. this, also, was when he began to hate the life that was made for him. by the time he was fifteen, evander was already designing formulas and chemical compounds worthy of teaching. he was, intellectually, rather brilliant. the summers he spent experimenting at home, away from prying eyes. it didn't earn him less ridicule, but he hardly cared by the time he turned sixteen. he understood his place. he began to count down the days, now, until he was able to get out entirely of the stifling lifestyle he had grown to absolutely abhor. once he was eighteen, he would be free of the expectations and could part ways with his parents. over the years, valid or not, a steady resentment had built toward his family. if they were so eager to hide him, then he would happily be gone as soon as he could. and he did. within a few days of graduating hogwarts, evander disappeared from the selwyn estate. he did most of the moving himself, quietly and quickly, as he was eager to be out on his own. his announcement at dinner one night was a simple, "i'm leaving", said near the end during a lull in conversation. whether or not they believed him, or fully understood, he didn't care to ask; after dinner he put on his jacket and walked out of the door. none of them have seen him since. now, evander goes entirely by burnes and revels in the separation from his past it gives him. early on in his career, someone from the criminal underground took note of his skill and began to use his talents for their work. though he now has established the notoriety to be able to work for himself, most of his clients do tend to be of the less-than-legal variety. he does anything from explosives to firearms, but only tends to take assignments he's interesting in now that he has the luxury of being selective. for most of his childhood, evander wished to be seen. but now, as an adult, he enjoys the peace and independence that comes with operating out of sight.
