Antonio is a shape-shifter when it comes to his personality, adopting traits as they suit the scenario, wearing them like masks or hats. It's rare that anyone sees who he truly is, frankly he doesn't fully remember anymore. He keeps his inner thoughts and feelings carefully guarded through layers of abrasive, defensive traits. When he doesn't need to sweet talk, he's aloof to the point of coldness- with a brusk exterior designed to keep people from getting too close. A staunch individualist, Antonio abhors being bossed around, and tends to rub authority figures the wrong way. But beneath the rough exterior of self-preservation, Antonio is a deeply caring man. biography For nearly a decade, Antonio Cortez's life was the picture of perfection. The firstborn son of Amara and Alastair Cortez, poised to inherit the family dynasty. The Cortezes were a powerful family, ruling their picturesque town with an iron fist, painting its streets in the blood of werewolves. Alastair was tough on his son, even from a young age, to prepare him to carry the family legacy. Antonio took to it, for the most part, though as a boy was closer with his mother- something which Alastair took for weakness, softness, and strove to press it out of him. Antonio still remembers the day when everything changed. He'd been tasked with keeping Isolde out from underfoot while their mother and grandmother prepared dinner. Antonio had been a natural with her ever since she was born (another trait resented by their father), and had taken the toddler down to the beach- where they'd spent the evening searching for starfish and crabs in the tide pools. Antonio had lost track of the time, sending the siblings scurrying back well after nightfall to witness the horrors within their home. Breached by werewolves intent on revenge. Alastair, away on business, had been their main target, but with him absent they'd turned their rage instead on the family he'd left behind, unguarded. Antonio had time only to hide with Isolde, shrouding them in darkness in a cupboard, his hand pressed over her mouth to stifle her cries as their mother was torn apart. Everything moved quickly from there. Deciding their home country was no longer safe, Alastair uprooted his children from Mexico to London. Starting over wasn't a good look on a man used to ruling the world, something which he took out on his children- raising them coldly, turning them to killers. Antonio recalls being slapped at age ten, crying for his mother. Weak, his father had told him. Thus began a lifetime of constructing walls around his emotions, emotions other than anger, which was valuable, useful. Antonio was a terror in school, often bullying the other students, rebelling against his professors. He had spent his whole life being told what to do, and resented it. He craved freedom that never came. Despite his troublemaking nature, Antonio was a gifted student, enough so where he had his sights set on becoming an auror after graduation. It would have granted him unparalleled access to records and more, to better pick off werewolves to avenge his mother. But Antonio's rebellion was his own undoing. One too many snaps back at senior aurors and he was booted from training. Insubordinate, careless, untrainable. His father had called him worse, Antonio took it in stride, instead returning to his father and younger sister, who had become a brilliant huntress, to carry on the family legacy.
