an inkpot spilled across parchment, a lantern flickering in a window, waves crashing against the side of a boat, looking out over a clear sea of stars, blood dripping from the blade of a dagger, books piled high around her, an open window gently billowing out the curtains, the soft light that comes with dawn, a sweet taste resting on your lips family information
biography katherine amara l'wanne was born the only child of claudius and lorelei l'wanne in april of 1635, the earl and countess of the old english city of arkaley. claudius and lorelei were the exception to the norm at the time; they were a marriage of love, not an arrangement. lorelei, before marrying claudius, was a few steps below his station; but that had hardly matttered to a young claudius, who had been absolutely smitten by the headstrong, witty alchemist. those were traits that were passed down to katherine, who grew up to be a smaller version of lorelei. from a young age, katherine showed the signs of following in her parents' path. though their primary occupation was guiding and leading the small merchant town of arkaley, their passion was the recovery and restoration of magical and muggle artifacts. the love of history was rampant throughout the l'wannes; dinner conversation was far more likely to cover their theories on a piece's origins than the political climate of the surrounding england. as a teenager, lorelei began to study alongside her mother with the intent to one day join her parents within the business. katherine became incredibly close with her parents. for all intents and purposes, the l'wannes were a perfect, little family. that all came crashing down in the winter of 1658. it was not uncommon for lorelei and claudius to leave town for a few days, sometimes even weeks, at a time to attend to their various business ventures. as katherine grew older, she was placed in charge of the estate (with the help of the l'wannes key advisor) during these absences. her parents left for a business trip in late fall of 1658 with a return date within a fortnight. a fortnight passed, and then another, before katherine began to grow worried. it was another week and no letters later that in a fit of either passion or stupidity she decided to head after them. accompanied by her advisor who had become a close friend, she followed their notes and began to head off. it was a year long journey full of entirely too much excitement, loss, and katherine ignoring the pressing feeling that it was all for naught. her only consolation was the company she had in their advisor, emerson. only a few years her senior, katherine soon found herself falling for him during their journey. delighted to learn he felt the same, they began a relationship and she found solace in the company despite the constant flutter from inn to inn and city to city in search of her parents. TW: mention of death the journey didn't end in her finding her parents alive. in fact, it ended in quite the opposite fashion; with emerson on a cliff threatening her at knife point. her greatest fear was actualized; it had indeed all been for naught. though he had intended to push her off the cliff, the scuffle ended in katherine getting ahold of his dagger and stopping him herself. she was left that night, alone and with the knowledge that she was being hunted. apparently her parents' vocal pro-halfbreed and anti-purist views hadn't settled well with a particular organization. for five years katherine roamed europe, fleeing the organization that killed her parents it wasn't until 1663 that she officially renounced her claim on arkaley and set sail on her family's ship, the apotelesma, as its captain. she found freedom in the sea. a freedom that, of course, didn't last for long. in 1666, her ship was attacked by another in the middle of the atlantic ocean. during the fight, much of her crew was killed by the very organization she found herself fleeing. katheine was prepared to do the same when their leader, a man that went by the name of thaxian, saw a use in her that the others of his group had not. a vampire and a sadistic man, he turned her and disappeared; leaving her with half her crew, a nearly destroyed boat, and a new reality to cope with. katherine decided to take her tragedy and do something with it. though it could have easily been seen as the distraction tactic it was, she fiercely ignored that fact and began to work as a smuggler of halfbreeds in need of passage. she provided free room and board to those seeking asylum and, in turn, learned much about the world during her travels. it wasn't until 1770 that she stepped down as captain to resume her studies, no longer finding the freedom in the sea that she once was. the apotelemesa still sails today as a cargo ship under a different name, though katherine is pleased whenever she sees the name of the ship pop up in her readings now and again. in 1776, katherine founded the historical society of magical preservation. inspired by her mother's hope that one day education would be more free and accessible, katherine decided to found a society brought together by those principles. the arkaley museum of magical history, built in 1823 adjacent to the society, was named after the city she once called home. katherine operated as the head curator of the society until 1937, when she stepped down to simply advising the board and operating as a senior historian. she is still heavily involved in the group and its work, dedicated to seeing out that her parents' legacy lives on through her work. throughout the years, thaxian had made occasional appearances. they often come with much pain to katherine, as she is his only fledgling and heavily under his influence, but she is comforted with the fact that they only come about every one hundred years. after she fought back during his last appearance, thaxian has yet to again rear his head. though she is due for another visit, she ignores it; instead focusing, as of late, on how her work falls into place in the context of the wizarding world yet again torn apart by war.
