To those who don't know her, Amaya is a timid young girl, too afraid to so much as raise her hand in class- if she's even noticed at all. But behind the anxiety, and inability to speak in all but the most intimate situations, is an inquisitive mind, an observant soul, and a gentle heart. Though she rarely speaks, Amaya has a talent for words, often expressing her feelings through poetry (though she's not apt to share it), or escaping into the world of a book. biography Amaya and her twin sister Adora began life as something of a novelty, the identical girls having a rare set of birthdays- Amaya, the eldest of what would become five children, was born at 11:56 PM on December 31st. Adora making her debut several minutes later, after the clock struck midnight. The twins made a local newspaper, heralding the end of a year, and the beginning of another, though their sensational beginning paved way to a much simpler, more difficult way of life. Their mother Yessenia was very young, unmarried, and their father was disinterested in raising them. Angelo wasn't much of a presence in the life of any of his children (which he and his on and off girlfriend made rather easily), coming and going on a whim, leading along poor Yessenia who was helplessly enamored with him. That's not to say it was all bad in the Rivera household. Despite their valid complaints with Angelo, Yessenia's parents (who had had her later in life) were active as they could be in helping raise their grandchildren. Amaya took to an almost invisible sort of supporting role when she was old enough to begin helping- stepping up to help care for, clean up after, and cook for her younger siblings. She became used to slipping through the cracks, her younger, louder, needier siblings requiring more of the limited attention the household could provide. Over the years Amaya spoke less and less, seemingly unnoticed. She spoke readily to her abuelos, her hermanos, but by the time she was ten her voice seemingly turned off the moment she stepped from the house- or when an outsider stepped in. Primary school and making friends were difficult for Amaya, who wished to participate, but was too afraid to do so. Amaya kept close to Adora, her twin being one of the few who understood her social difficulty, the girls often joined at the hip. She clung further on one of the most difficult days they'd had thus far. Yessenia's fourth pregnancy was tumultuous, complications during the delivery of Tulio resulting in her untimely death. Angelo, still disinterested, ignored all attempts at contact from Yessenia's devastated parents. Too old and frail to parent five children, one of them a newborn, they sorrowfully placed their grandchildren up for adoption. Terrified of being split from her siblings, Amaya clammed up further in the face of the unknown. Fortunately, her worries eventually proved unfounded. Hector and Aryan Santos, a married couple who longed for fatherhood, had been looking for a child to adopt when they heard the plight of the Rivera children- and they graciously opened their home to all five. Amaya is now on the path to slowly growing accustomed to her new home and new life, both anxious and excited about beginning Hogwarts in the autumn.
