biography Hassan Muzhir Karim was born the third child and second son of Sitara and Hamid Karim, a first generation immigrant to two parents born in Pakistan. Both Sitara and Hamid had lived in the United Kingdom for most of their lives, having immigrated with their families as children, but both retained many of the old-world values of their homeland which were imparted upon their children, as well. As the third-born child, Hassan did not have many of the same expectations placed on him as his older brother or sister. That is, at least at first. Hassan was just barely a year old when a great tragedy befell the Karim family; Farid, the eldest Karim son, was taken from their home in London by the infamous werewolf Fenrir Greyback. The Karim family was told he was likely dead. Fenrir Greyback had little use for children, or at least that was what they were told by the aurors assigned to the case. Sitara and Hamid Karim were devastated to lose their son, though they held out hope that he was still alive and would one day be rescued from Fenrir. One day, they hoped, Farid would come home, and their family would be whole once more. When Fenrir was killed by aurors five years later, and their son was not returned to them, Sitara and Hamid Karim resigned themselves to the fact that Farid was dead. Their eldest son, taken from them. It would take them years to grieve, and they never forgot him or stopped missing their son. Hassan grew up with memories of his brother that were not his own; he had been an infant when Farid was taken from his family, too young to remember his brother's crooked smile or his laugh or any number of other things his parents and older sister told him about. The family grieved the loss of their son and brother, but life went on. Hassan was now, in effect, the eldest son of the Karim family, and the expectations of being such were quickly placed on him. When Hassan came of age he attended Hogwarts and was quickly sorted into Hufflepuff. His bright spirit and wide-eyed optimism easily won him a place among his fellow Hufflepuffs, and it wasn't hard for him to make friends. In school was when he first began struggling with his sexuality, his family's views on homosexuality causing a lot of inner conflict for young Hassan. This struggle culminated in his sleeping with a female student, cheating on his first boyfriend, to prove his heterosexuality, and he still struggles with his orientation to this day. Though he was not always the best student, in school Hassan was quick to find the subjects and fields that sparked his interest. Hassan had a natural desire to learn, enjoying the intricacies of Archeology and Ancient Runes in particular, though his penchant for learning did not always translate well to assignments, tests, and essays. He worked hard for sometimes mediocre marks, and in the end he graduated somewhere near the middle of his class. Hassan took a two-year gap between his graduation from Hogwarts and his enrollment at Rutherford School for Powerful Mages, a magical university in London. During those two years Hassan bounced between jobs, trying to find something that sparked his interest, though in the end continuing his schooling was what called out to him the most. Upon enrollment at Rutherford School for Powerful Mages, Hassan moved out of his parents' home in favor of the college dorms, in which he was roomed with an old school acquaintance. Hassan enjoyed his time in college, though it became quickly obvious that he was not cut out for the pressure that came from attending university full-time. His grades suffered and he nearly flunked out two semesters in a row. Afraid of failing out of college entirely, Hassan took a semester off from school and started a job at the Ministry of Magic, landing a job as the secretary for the Department of Runes and Symbols. He had majored in ancient runes at Rutherford, and his interest in the subject made the position a natural fit for him. It was relaxing to be away from the pressure of tests and projects that had caused him so much stress in school, but Hassan's natural desire to learn soon left him missing college. And so, back to Rutherford he went. Part-time schooling turned out to be much more comfortable for Hassan. He wasn't going to school for a degree for a particular career, and so there was no pressure to earn his degree on any timetable. In the spring of 2022 Hassan reenrolled at Rutherford School for Powerful Mages, taking only three courses in the evenings after his workday at the Ministry. Now that his life has at last settled into a good rhythm, Hassan has begun to turn his sights towards the rest of his life, and, more importantly, what that life might look like when and if the war ends. As such he tends to focus on people's faces, almost to the point of being disconcerting in his intensity. He is an excellent cook but hates cooking, and would order delivery or takeout for every meal if he could.
