biography There was no celebration when Rafael Ian Caiazzo was born, but the Duke and Duchess of Ferrara were pleased to have had a son on their first try. Rafael was raised as a proper gentleman, given private schooling up until his acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was received. Throughout his time at Hogwarts, Rafael was well known for his expertise in potions and defense against the dark arts, becoming a star pupil amongst his classmates and a shining star for his professors and other teachers. He went on to graduate with stellar marks and to attend Italy’s Institute of Bewitchery in Pompeii, furthering his excellence in the fields of potions and spell crafting, while now funneling the duties as the acting Duke of Ferrara now that he had come of age. Following the deaths of his parents back to back, Rafael continued to uphold his family name and estate, becoming the leader that he was always meant to be in his father’s eyes… Though there was no one around to help him celebrate his newfound greatness, at least not until Rafael met Nicola Lombardi. The other wizard spun fantastical stories and ideas about immortality, a feat that Rafael was told he would not be able to accomplish through simple magic and the spells and such he had tried to create. Young and impressionable, without much guidance, the Duke of Ferrara fell into the fantastical world that Nicola created with his words, manipulated by the idea of living forever and being poisoned against the idea of humanity, coming to resent most humans due to the trickery he suffered at the hands of the older wizard, as now, he was right where Nicola needed and wanted him to be. When he was thirty two years old, Rafael settled into the newness of immortality after he was manipulated into it, sinking into his newfound role as the lackey of Nicola Lombardi, being forced to carry out his evil deeds and be at his every beck and call, hardly ever getting a break when it came to himself and his own work. There was only one little bit of solace in his life, however, and that was Sabina Caruso, a human who loved Rafael as he was, who knew that he was not all bad and wanted nothing more than to be with him forever. The couple arranged to elope after Rafael turned her, escaping from Nicola's clutches and living out their immortal days together, however... Nicola found this out, a fact that Rafael still questions, and killed his love right in front of him. The vampire was tortured for days on end, chained up in the dungeon of Nicola's estate, until the final day when his sire crushed his Sun Stone under his boot and broke Rafael's hand by extension. It was that day when Rafael realized that he would never be truly free, that he was doomed to this fate for all eternity. Fate seemed to have a different plan, however, when she thrust Catherine Sutton into his life, another vampire and lover of his sire's, her and Rafael found a common interest — their hatred of Nicola Lombardi. Weak and heartbroken, he allowed himself to be manipulated by yet another vampire, yet for a good reason, and Rafael killed Nicola with a stake through the heart after his sire threatened to throw him out at dawn and watch him burn. Catherine and Rafael split Nicola's riches and embarked on an adventure of sorts together, often warming the other's bed and keeping them company when it was needed. The pair had a habit of wreaking havoc and getting into trouble, crashing galas and parties simply because they felt like doing so, and it was during one of these times when Rafael met Alessandro Carminati. The instant that their eyes met across the ballroom, Rafael fell fatally in love with Alessandro, but the lord was married, and Rafael would not tempt fate. Though it was by Fate's hand that Alessandro fell into Rafael's arms regardless, following the death of both his wife and child during childbirth. The Duke attempted to persuade the mournful lord into a life of longevity and immortality, but the man refused, preferring death to the possibility of being with him forever, so Rafael did as he was asked to. In the midst of being drained of his life source, however, Alessandro changed his mind and all Rafael could do was save him, turning him into a creature of the night. The pair were mated, by a strange twist of fate, and Rafael always swore that there was no force on Earth that would ever separate them, even if loving one another was hard as much as it was easy. Yet neither of them believed in the bond of mates, turning a blind eye to the intensity of their feelings, even when Rafael took an Unbreakable Vow as a promise, a brilliant show of his dedication to never leave Alessandro. For centuries the pair of vampires fought as passionately as they loved each other, and it was during one fateful night in 1955, in the middle of one such argument that Alessandro packed his things and left Rafael behind. It was during the time that they spent apart that Rafael realized that everything he thought he knew had been wrong, that they were mates, the pair of them were meant to be together forever... Yet he had ruined everything by being stubborn, cruel, and violent — as he had always promised he would never be. Sixty seven years have gone by since the last time the mates have seen one another, and Rafael has all but abandoned the prospect of ever seeing Alessandro again. A call from Catherine (and the brewing war), however, has brought Rafael to London for the first time in centuries, and he's there to stay... At least for now.
