family information
biography The Purcell family was one of the founding families of the Crystal People in Nevada, USA. They were some of the most staunch believers in the idea that they, and all witches and wizards, were the Chosen People of God. They believed that God had blessed them with magic and it was their natural right to have dominion over the world. Though the Purcells were pureblood, they welcomed any witch or wizard, for they were all chosen in the eyes of God. The Crystal People resided in Truth or Consequences in Nevada, where they lived among themselves and according to their beliefs. Phillip Purcell was the third generation of Purcell men that lived with the Crystal People. He and Maria Abernathy met while they attended Crystal Springs Academy for Magic. They were married within a year of Maria’s graduation, and she joined the Crystal People shortly before they announced their first pregnancy. Phillip and Maria Purcell’s family would eventually grow to five, though for some time they struggled. First there came a baby girl named Lauren Isabelle Purcell, a blessing on the couple. But the religious pressure of the Crystal People pushed the couple to try for another child, a son this time. A son was needed to carry on the family name and the family legacy. Maria and Phillip tried for two years, by which point they were thought to have lost the favor of God and were doomed to be son-less. At last, though, after four years, they were blessed with another pregnancy, though alas no son came out of it. They named their second daughter Iris Jayne Purcell. Phillip and Maria, along with much of the Crystal People community, were disappointed in the outcome of the Purcell’s second pregnancy, but they were spared further scrutiny when they had another child five years later, this time a son to carry on the family name. They named him Phillip Joseph Purcell Jr. For many years, all was well with the Purcell family. Maria and Phillip had no more children, as they had at last had the son they so desperately wanted. Their children were raised in the strict lifestyle of the Crystal People, raised to believe in their superiority as magical folk. Their father was a leader in the community, and raised his children as such. Punishment was often and strict, never letting even a single toe out of line. Drew Purcell knew from an early age that they were not the daughter their parents raised them to be. They were uncomfortable in the roles they were forced into within their community and couldn’t seem to figure out how they fit into it all, no matter how hard they tried. Every dress their mother fit them in was too tight or too loose, and they were strictly forbidden from wearing pants at home. The long hair their mother fawned on was a curse, and they hated the way they looked in the mirror. The name Iris felt wrong and unnatural. At eleven, Drew was allowed to attend Crystal Springs Academy for Magic. It was at the magical school in Nevada that they began to thrive, allowing themselves to start to discover who they were. Free of the oppressive rules of their household, at least for nine or ten months of the year, they finally had the chance to explore who they were. It was during their school years that they began questioning their identity and what they wanted out of their life. It was also at Crystal Springs that Drew became close with Zoe Gaier, though she did not go by that name at the time. Zoe was a fellow member of the Crystal People, though three years older. The two grew close, confiding in one another things they had never told anyone else, and for a brief couple of years, Drew didn’t feel so alone. And then it all came crashing down. Zoe, one of their only friends in the world, left Nevada for an internship in China shortly after graduating from Crystal Springs. Drew knew that she had been having issues with her family and herself, but they had never expected them to actually leave. She asked Drew to come with her, promising they could both start over, away from the oppressive cult that had been their upbringing. And Drew would have, if it had not been for their brother. Phillip Purcell Jr was only thirteen at the time, and was the only person in the world Drew cared about more than themselves. They couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him to fend for himself, especially because by then their older sister was married and trying for her first child. The harsh discipline Drew received would be transferred to Phillip, and that was the last thing Drew wanted. So, with a heavy heart, they said goodbye to Zoe. The two kept in touch for some time, but as it became clear to the Crystal People that Zoe was not returning, Drew was forced to cut off contact with her. For years they resigned themselves to never leaving, protecting their brother from the worst of their parent’s discipline. It was what they were meant to do, they told themselves. Protecting Phillip was the most important thing. Stuck at home with a strict family that allowed for no foibles, Drew dedicated themselves to learning an elemental ability, eventually deciding on air. They studied hard until they had all but mastered the ability, and they had resigned themselves to the live they led. It wasn't so bad, after all. It could always be worse. Just before Christmas 2021, however, Drew’s world was turned upside down. Their brother Phillip passed away suddenly, and they suddenly had no purpose, no direction. They were destroyed by his passing, and was allowed by their family to take a three-month potions internship in California. Their parents thought some space would help them deal with their grief and process their brother’s passing. In California, for the first time, Drew could truly breathe. For the first time, they were well and truly alone, away from their parents and the Crystal People. It was in Sacramento that they cut their hair and began to explore who they actually were and who they wanted to be. It was there they chose the name Drew, shedding the name Iris like an old, ill-fitting sweater. March 2022 brought the end of Drew’s internship. They were meant to return home, had even scheduled a Portkey to return them to Truth or Consequence. They had a family to return to, a life to resume. They even had a newborn niece to meet. But they couldn’t do it. They couldn’t go back, they couldn’t return to that life. They had to leave, had to get out. One of the last letters they had received from Zoe had told them she was moving to London, and, in an act of impulsivity they didn’t even know they were capable of, Drew visited the Sacramento MACUSA office and applied for an emergency Portkey to London. Now, Drew has arrived in London for a reason they aren’t even particularly sure of, chasing the ghost of a person that may no longer exist. What awaits them, they aren’t sure, but they know now there is no going back, no returning to the life they had once lived.
