biography Born in colonial Brazil in the year of 1609, Manoel was the firstborn child to Emilio and Doroteia Delgado, and this seemingly small detail would shape the way the little boy grew into a man - and later, a woman. His mother and father, who owned an engenho, or sugar plantation, were proud to have a son as their firstborn to carry on the line, and expected that he would take over the family property when he had come of age. These hopes had been dashed when the Dutch seized power, pushing many native Portuguese families from their homes and livelihoods, the Delgado's included. Manoel was eleven at the time of the invasion of his family's town. His sister, born three years after Manoel, was barely eight. His parents, both magic, sent him off to school. When not around his parents, Manny found the ability to express himself a bit more, tending towards the more feminine nature of things, but he received a great deal of ridicule from both peers and his family when he revealed these things, so he learned to keep quiet about them, tucking that part of him away. His parents expected him to be the man of the family, to marry early, have children, and continue on the family legacy. This pressure came down directly on Manny, who had no brother to help soften the blow of these expectations. His sister, Fernanda, did not have these expectations placed upon her, and instead was put into practices to ready her to become a bride. Manny became almost jealous of Fern, who delighted in the little things she could do. Manoel suppressed his feelings, for the sake of his family. He did not indulge in the things that brought him joy. When his parents arranged for him to marry Iolanda when he was only sixteen and she was fourteen, he did not protest. After Manoel graduated Castelobruxo, the spouses welcomed a son, and then, two years later, a daughter. Manoel did not know his children beyond the ages of ten and eight. Through everything, Manny had one thing: music. He loved to sing, He would spend most his nights out, performing on the streets and in small shows, while his wife stayed home with the children. It was while he was out one night that he met a man that enchanted him. He knew he didn't really love Iolanda, but that their marriage was necessary. He hadn't really had any romantic feelings before, but this man...it stirred something confusing within him. It felt wrong to be attracted to a man, and in the seventeenth century, such an attraction was enough to get one executed. So, like everything else that felt true to his identity, Manny hid that part of himself. Still, he had been so inspired by this man that he left his wife and children to pursue music. He travelled about South America, happy to finally do at least something he enjoyed. The Dutch incursion, however, had not yet quite fully begun, and soon, the violence arrived. Manny, as a musician, hadn't really witnessed much of it aside from a skirmish here and there. But one night, a brawl erupted in a bar between Dutch soldiers and Portuguese natives, and Manoel was caught in the chaos as he tried to leave. He caught the wrong end of a blow that rendered him unconscious, and the rest he doesn't remember. He woke up a good time later with a burning in his throat unlike anything he had ever known. His Castelobruxo education had given him enough information to know that he was now um vampiro. The thirst in the first few decades was insatiable - he could hardly focus on anything except his next meal. When that urge subsided, it took Manoel a while to come to terms with what had happened, but he used the new time he had stretched before him to really devote himself to his music. In his immortality, he also found himself better able to express what it was he truly enjoyed - the more feminine side of things. It wasn't until about the middle of the nineteenth century that Manoel realized he could entirely change his identity as a vampire who outlived most the people around him. Instead of being a feminine-leaning man, he changed his appearance and recreated himself as a woman. He felt much more at home in that form, which became known as "drag" starting in around 1870. Manoel - now going by Leila - did not identify with the term until much later, however, until the trend really took off. When drag and drag queens in particular gained popularity and Leila was introduced to the world, she realized this was where she truly felt at home, and the people around her made her feel a little less like an outcaset and more like she belonged. From that moment, she became Senhora Solstice Equinox, a drag queen. Before this transformation, however, she became a member of the Absinthe Angels, encountering Elvira while in a South-Asian country shortly after rebranding herself as Leila. She is still a member of the group, but is the only drag queen. Elvira and Claudette both know she is biologically a man, but neither of them know the life Equinox led before she became Leila. She has cut herself off entirely from that part of her life, and has fully devoted herself to the Equinox persona, which she feels she can live fully through.
