verity elsa st. croix you’re a sweet talker, but darling whatcha gonna say now? general info
personality
Verity, on the surface, is a bastion of poise and elegance- seemingly always knowing just what to say and when to hold her tongue. She can diffuse tense situations with a smile, coming out on top with her social adversary hardly noticing. It is a persona of sorts, carefully crafted in her years in high society. Verity is truthfully highly self-serving, viewing most interactions as a game where she stands to gain something. Her pride is easily wounded, and she can easily turn venomous when pushed too far- always seeking revenge for perceived slights. Equal parts sly and smart, Verity carefully crafts her schemes, with the determination to back those traits up she is a force to be reckoned with when she has her sights set on something. family information
biography Verity’s story begins with her father, Octavian, the fourth of his name and the end of a long line of pureblood wizards, and his difficulty in finding a wife with which to have children to continue the name. On a holiday to Germany, he met Lisel Kaiser, a woman seven years his junior- the pair were immediately smitten, and it wasn’t long before the pair married, with the blessing of both pureblood families. They settled in the historic Jarsdel Manor in Octavian’s native England. It took them several years before they had their first, and only, child. Much to Octavian’s dismay, Lisel was only able to give him a daughter, thus meaning the Jarsdel line would end with him. Verity often felt distance from her father growing up, who had only wanted a son, but found it ultimately didn’t matter. Lisel was a very doting mother, who spoiled her rotten. Her mother taught her about the finer things in life, passing down generations’ worth of pureblood supremacy in the process. To no surprise, Verity received her Hogwarts letter at eleven, and in September of that year was sorted into her father’s former house of Slytherin. She found the Jarsdel name came with it respect from her fellow purebloods, and she took great care to only associate with those she considered to be on her level. Verity was rather popular in school, primarily due to family money, but in her youth honed well on her social skills. She found she was often the life of high society parties. Verity scored average marks in most subjects, despite her intelligence, she simply couldn’t be bothered with homework knowing a life of luxury with little academic effort awaited her after schooling. After graduating Verity settled into said life easily, affiliating with Quidditch stars, Ministry officials, and anyone else she deemed important. It was during this time, at nineteen, Verity became acquainted with the man who would become her husband. In a slightly scandalous move, she openly pursued the widower forty-eight years her senior in a precise, calculated way. The St. Croix family was just as old as her own, and just as wealthy. Playing the long con, Verity got close to Jacques, doting on him, making him feel special. It took two years of effort before the pair were betrothed, and they were wed the year following in a lavish ceremony. Verity easily settled into the role of the lady of the manor, promptly redecorating the stuffy old place, wanting to remove every last trace of Jacques’ late first wife. Including the nagging detail of her now stepson, Marquis. With Jacques wrapped around her finger it took little effort to get Marquis cut off from the St. Croix Gringott’s vault, but the real battle would come four years later, when Jacques suffered a fatal stroke. The healers had been unable to save him, leaving Verity a widow at twenty-six. It was then that the legal proceedings had begun. Jacques had willed everything to Verity, and Marquis was prepared to fight tooth and nail to not be left penniless. Wanting nothing more than to be rid of the speed bump in her plan, Verity enlisted (or rather, threatened) the butler of the St. Croix manor to help her spin an entirely false tale of how Marquis was abusive towards her and his late father, hence why they had agreed to cut him out. She was lying through her teeth, but able to cry on command, Verity swayed the judge and ultimately won the settlement- the St. Croix manor and fortune were hers. Coming up on the year mark of the trial, Verity is still playing the role of widow in mourning, but is staying sharp as she likely has not seen the last of Marquis.
