magical ability descriptions
teach me a thing or two
below are the different abilities that can be learned. The header will list the ability, as well as whether the ability can be learned or is genetic.
This ability allows a witch or wizard to morph into an animal of their choosing without the use of a wand. This is limited to one animal only. The animal will have distinct markings similar to the witch or wizard (if the Animagus wears glasses, there will be a pattern in the fur or scales of the creature that resemble glasses, etc). The animal is chosen by the Animagus, but typically reflects their personality (wise person morphs into an owl, etc). The point is to blend in, so the animal will rarely be magical. It's a very difficult process and can be quite dangerous if done incorrectly.
A practitioner of this magic, called a Legilimens, can use magic to enter the mind of another person and sift through their thoughts and memories. While this is a learned ability, one must have a natural knack for it in order to be successful. It's a very invasive magic and is heavily frowned upon. True Legilimens are rare, for the consequences to both the Legilimens and the victim if the Legilimency is performed incorrectly can be deadly.
he opposite of Legilimency, this magic is used to keep people out of the mind. Practitioners of this magic are called Occlumens, and are relatively rare. While this is a learned ability, one must have a natural knack for it in order to be successful. A basic form of this magic is being taught in Defense Against the Dark Arts, but true Occlumens are rare, given the danger of this magic when performed incorrectly.
People with this ability can change parts of their appearance at will. They can't morph fully into another person or animal, but they can give themselves different characteristics of people and animals. For example, they can give themselves wings or tails or a different eye or hair color. Their weight and height will not fluctuate, however. This ability is a bit difficult to control, especially in fits of extreme emotion, with hair and eye color changing with different moods, though control gets easier with age.
These people have the ability to glimpse into the past and the future through visions, and the future can be determined through prophecy. Full Seers are very rare and are the only ones who have true visions and prophecies. Most Partial Seers have more feelings and sensations in the Other, rather than true visions or prophecies (think Professor Trelawney).
People that can talk to snakes, or speak Parseltongue. This is a trait that is typically associated with Dark Magic, thus being an ability that is seen as evil and unwanted. This discrimination has lessened a bit because of Harry Potter. This is a recessive trait, making it a pretty rare ability, with family history on both the paternal and maternal side needed for the trait to appear.
these abilities can be either learned or genetic. The person with this ability can control a certain element. Learned Elementals are genuinely a lot less potent than Genetic Elementals. Genetic Elementals have a more difficult time controlling their abilities because of this. Purebloods are most likely to develop the ability genetically, though it's a rare thing to possess. This is a relatively difficult skill to learn as well, making both Learned and Genetic Elementals relatively rare. The list of elemental abilities, both learned and genetic, are below:
animagus (learned)
