with great power comes great responsibility.
| Everything was so cold, and the world that he had once known had come crashing down all around him in an instant. Benson didn’t know what to do with that; he didn’t know how to move forward or how to cope with the fact that everything had changed in the blink of an eye. It was terrifying to think about, but he knew that he had to be strong, he knew that he had to be the one to do something before they ended up in a universe where the sky was always dark and no one ever smiled again. Had this been what it was like for Harry Potter? Was this what things had come to all those years ago, was the sky so gloomy and the world so destitute? Benson didn’t know what was more terrifying, that or the fact that the fate of the world rested heavily on his shoulders. He swallowed thickly and shook his head, the muscle in his jaw jumping as he tried to think about what to do, what to say to people when he walked around this stupid safe house… He wasn’t a motivational speaker, not at all, he he wasn’t anyone’s superhero. Benson was just a kid. Still, there were some things worth fighting for, there were people that he needed to do the right thing for, important people that he needed to change the world for. Corvus and Aunt Maggie. The world didn’t deserve them, not the way that it was right now, but Benson was determined to be their superhero, he would do whatever he could for them, and not a single soul mattered aside from that. It would be hard, it would be tragic, but if it was what he was meant to do, then so be it. Now that his aunt was a little more stable, it meant that Benny had a little more time to spare to glue himself to Corvus’s side, and after Ransom’s impromptu visit, he knew that the older wizard needed it badly. There wasn’t much that they could do during the end of the world, especially since this war of epic proportions had reached the Muggles, but Benson would do what he could with a little magic and a stealthy trip to a nearby convenience market. It wasn’t much, and he would spend the rest of his life making up for it if he got the chance, but Benny knew that the distraction from his inner turmoil would be welcomed by Corvus. He set up a makeshift picnic, with a slightly frayed blanket from his bed, and made a small arrangement of the treats he’d managed to pick up. It would hopefully bring a smile back to Corvus’s face. He took the older boy’s hands, holding them gently as he led him to where he had set up their indoor picnic. It was a risk, sneaking out and bringing Corvus out of his makeshift hospital room, but Benny couldn’t stand the sterile nature and the scent of blood, plus he was more than certain that the older boy wanted a break from it, too. “Don’t you dare open your eyes yet,” Benson said sternly, cracking a half smile. “I worked really hard on this, and we’re almost there.” He chuckled a little before he stopped in front of the blanket and turned to look at Corvus, unable to help the smile that made its way onto his face. The Slytherin boy had always been beautiful, something that Benny had been jealous of (and intrigued by) from the minute they met, but that had only grown deeper and stronger as they had gotten older. He squeezed Cor’s hands and leaned in to kiss his cheek. “Open your eyes, love.” |
