❝ | How did one move on after the loss of love?
Piper had thought that losing Damien would be the worst of it, but then she'd lost her child. It had been horrific, traumatic, and painful in a way that she didn't know how to explain. The miscarriage had only happened a few days prior, but Piper was doing her best to keep moving. Her stomach turned over inside her at the thought of food, her legs wanting nothing more than to give out.
But, in this time of insurmountable pain, she found herself seeking the company of the one woman she didn't think she'd ever be able to relate to.
Marianna had come to her immediately after the masquerade with a bloody and dying Aurelius, begging for refuge. She claimed that she had been wrong, that she had chosen the wrong side... many didn't believe her. Hell, Piper wasn't even sure if she believed her. Still, at the end of the day, it was the living against Death and his undead children. They needed all the help they could get.
And so, as graciously as possible, Piper had ensured that both Marianna and Aurelius were cared for. She hadn't checked on either since, though she had received daily reports. Aurelius had only just woken up, and Marianna was cooperating in every sense of the word. Piper supposed that was all she could ask for.
Though her caretakers had resisted, wanting her to stay in bed, Piper had managed to convince them to let her move about on her own. She was still pale from the loss of blood, and her appearance was already starting to suffer from the lack of nutrients she was giving her body. Still, she carried on - she wanted nothing more than to give up, but she had a duty to fulfill.
Perhaps the true grief of what she'd lost hadn't hit her yet.
Piper entered the room where Marianna's cell was, the other woman behind glass. Piper bypassed that, ignoring the looks from the defeated Dark Lady as she entered into the cell, shutting and locking it behind her. She settled into a seat with a long sigh, hands coming up to rub at her temples.
"How are you?" Piper asked, voice slightly hoarse and tone defeated.

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Days in a cage thus far had no effect on her. It would tear at her eventually, but nothing was going to be worse than sitting and knowing her baby was still in Death’s hold. She’d held off Death long enough to get Aurelius out alive, and it was angry despite its sweeping victory. Her baby would suffer for her was her worry, and while Eleanor would likely be able to keep her out of harm’s way, nothing was ever a guarantee. Not knowing if Aurelius was even alive would ache until she knew the Order had done their job and saved his life. Her fate was forfeit if the two of them were gone.
The heavy door that led to her cell creaked loudly as it opened. There was no way to know who was descending until they stepped into her view. It was most likely another Order lackey, who she would once again refuse to speak to. If it was one of her cousins, she hoped they would heed her request to bring her things to her. She was fine to live in her cage, but she wanted it to be as comfortable as possible. Yet it was Piper Steele who stepped into her view. Marianna had not seen her ex-coworker, her former friend, since the last night she’d been in the castle. Long before that, Piper had stood at her side as her most trusted second, and before that they had been close friends. Close enough for Marianna to share the details of her life and let her in. Piper had betrayed her in the end, and she had yet to forgive her for it.
The glass door on her cage unlocked and in Piper came. Marianna made no move to make her escape; she had promised Orion as much. She held her book on her lap, watching as Piper settled into the chair at the corner of the room. She pressed her fingers to her temples, perhaps in an attempt to ease her stress. In times past, she would have dug into her mind and eased out the information before Piper had to tell her. Now they only had their words.
“How are you?”
“Me?” Marianna asked incrediously. When had Piper ever actually cared how she’d been? She’d only ever been her friend to turn on her, learned her life so she could ruin it. “I’ve been better and far worse. It's hardly the first time the world has crashed down around me.” She slid the book from her lap, abandoning the meaningless words meant for her entertainment. She examined her former friend closer now; pale and fragile were never how she’d have described her before.
“It seems like the same applies to you.”

❝ | Piper half-expected Marianna to instantly root around in her head, preparing herself to feel the ghastly talons scraping at her mental walls - not that they'd ever been particularly strong. She had her Sight, and she assumed that whatever was blocking her Inner Eye kept her mind closed as well... but, that was simply a theory. Everything in regards to her Seer abilities was just a theory at this point, and she'd gotten no closer to solving the problem. However, there was no attempt on Marianna's part. The other woman merely watched her, seemingly surprised by her innocent question. Piper supposed she couldn't blame her - they hadn't been friends for many years. Had they ever been, truly? Marianna had a way with people that she herself didn't seem to grasp, an enchanting power to pinpoint the weak and bend them to her will. Piper had been no exception, welcomed into the fold at her most vulnerable and warped into the perfect little weapon. That was neither here nor there anymore, though."Me? I’ve been better and far worse. It's hardly the first time the world has crashed down around me."Marianna leaned forward, studying her with slightly squinted eyes.“It seems like the same applies to you.”"For the first time, it seems we have a lot in common," Piper replied. Her eyes fell to her lap, where her hands had found rest. Her thumb grazed the ring that Damien had given her - far from the engagement ring they'd talked about, the onyx stone rested in silver on the middle finger of her right hand."Death killed Damien. Foolish, heroic Damien... he sacrificed himself to get me out," she replied, feeling tears burning her eyes. "I was pregnant, too. Was. I suppose women like us weren't meant to have anything good last." |

you die, i thrive, and so it goes, Marianna wanted desperately to know why Piper had come to see her. Yet, the wards that had been placed on her cage were strong, strong enough to keep her from using her skills to find out. She didn’t need a wand to use magic, and someone along the chain of command had anticipated that in earnest. She kept her walls built in anticipation of the Order using one of their far less talented legilimens to try and get the information out of her before she chose to give it up.
Yet she sat in silence, still, with her hands folded in her lap as her old friend sat before her. She expected ire in her gaze but was met with none. Instead, her old friend seemed tired. Not just tired, but for the first time Piper looked defeated. Usually, she was able to mask it better, but all pretenses between the women were dropped. Even as friends they’d worn masks, one’s better than the other’s, but this was the first time there was nothing but truth lying between them.
There was no need for anything else.
“Death killed Damien. Foolish, heroic Damien... he sacrificed himself to get me out.”
In a previous time, Marianna would have comforted her, but she felt unequipped to do so now. It was by her hand Death was roaming the world, so it was her direct fault that Damien was dead. Damien had always been a thorn in her side, he was no doubt a fool, and their personalities had butted heads time and time again. She never had truly wanted him dead; he had brought her friend joy the same way she had found with her own lover.
“I was pregnant, too. Was. I suppose women like us weren't meant to have anything good last.”
Piper would have been a mother. They’d talked once before about having children, but it had not come to fruition until most recently. Maybe it was ironic that the two of them would only have families as the world shattered around them. Yet Piper had lost lover and babe; she had both somewhere in the terrifying world. Her hands unfolded, her body moving with a brain wired to try and help her friend, and she reached out for her before she hesitated. Her hand fell through the air, moving back to clasp in her lap.
What could she really do? This was another disaster of her own making.
“I’ve always thought I don’t deserve it,” Marianna said, her voice softer than before as she met her friend’s teary eyes. Marianna never deserved Aurelius, no matter how perfectly bad they were for one another, and she certainly didn't deserve her sweet daughter. Piper deserved Damien.
“But you do, and I’m sorry you lost them.”
