“ Del was home, and they were safe, but there were more than a few hurdles left for them to pass before things could go back to normal. If they could ever get back there at all.
The healers had been doing everything they could for Del, but it was clear from the look on their faces that they had a long road to recovery. Both of their ankles, one of their wrists, one arm, and one of their legs had had to be re-broken and set properly so that they could heal, they still had several broken ribs, and scars littered their skin from countless other injuries inflicted upon them by the Kindred. They were ghostly thin and frail, and it would be weeks, maybe longer, before they were strong enough to be up and walking around again.
For now, Del couldn't do much more than sleep. The healers had them on some pretty powerful pain potions that left them drowsy and spacey, which was good when it came to managing their pain and the nightmares that inevitably followed every time they closed their eyes, but wasn't so good when it came to the long line of visitors that had come to see them. There had been countless Order members, Children of the Moon, and Aurors come to talk to them, on top of their family and friends. Everyone wanted to talk to them, and Del found themself exhausted from even the shortest interactions. Their dads helping them shave the last few remaining locks of hair from their head days before had proved too much, and they had been exhausted ever since.
That day, Del had spent much of the morning being poked and prodded at by the healers, which had become the norm for them in the past days. Their dads had been by their side as much as possible since they had arrived at the hospital, and when the healers were done, the three of them talked while Del struggled through their breakfast. As hungry as they were, even the act of lifting food from their tray to their mouth was too much for them. They refused to let their dads help more than absolutely necessary; they needed to be able to do this one thing on their own, when they could do so little already.
Del grew restless as the afternoon arrived. It was a Saturday, and Quinn was due to arrive with Austen soon after lunch. Del had been relieved to hear that Austen was safe, that he had been rescued while they were captured. Though it had been more than a week since they had been rescued, Del hadn't wanted the boy to see them in the state they had been in when they were first rescued, nor did they want Austen to miss school for them. So they had waited until the following weekend to see him.
A knock on the door drew Del's attention, and Roger and Jacob took it as their cue to leave for a few minutes. It would do their dads to get some air, and Del wanted a moment alone with Austen, anyway. Del struggled into a more-seated position as the door opened, and they let out a breath they didn't know they'd been holding when Austen came into view. Del Remington Addams★ dandy ♫

Surely someone will reach out a hand And show you a safe place to land Del had been rescued, they were alive and safe in the hospital. Austen had been eager for days to go see them, bothering Quinn twice a day for news and to pick him up from school. But their leader had insisted that Del wasn’t quite strong enough, and Austen ought to go to his classes anyway. Finally, on Saturday, it was time to go see Del. Quinn briefed Austen probably as much as he dared. Del was in rough shape with broken bones, scars, and would be very thin. Austen knew that ought to prepare him for seeing his parent, but he really couldn’t imagine Del any other way than how they’d always been to him- so bright and full of life. Even if Del looked worse for wear, Austen hoped he would still get that same feeling from them. They walked through the hospital, Quinn passing straight by the welcome desk and several healers on the way to Del’s room. He knocked shortly on the door, causing two people Austen could only assume were Del’s dads to walk outside. Austen gave them a little nod, but before they could speak, Quinn gave him a little nudge to go into the room on his own. Austen stepped in and immediately saw Del. They didn’t look the same as before, of course, but Austen still broke into a wide grin at the sight of his parent. ”Del!” he exclaimed, immediately rushing forward. He stopped short of the bed, just barely getting himself to curb his enthusiasm before totally overwhelming Del. He reached his arms out delicately, wrapping them lightly, so lightly, across Del’s tiny frame. ”I’m so sorry,” Austen found himself whispering. ”I know I went missing out of the blue, I wish I’d fought back more. And then when Quinn found me, you were gone. I missed you so much, I’m glad you’re back.” Austen kept his head low as he spoke, tears starting to well in his eyes. It had been a long few months. “ Quinn had told Del probably a thousand times by now that Austen was alright, that he was away at Hogwarts but was safe and sound. He had been rescued from Marianna Lestrange's clutches unharmed and, though another werewolf had died in his place, Austen was home now. He was safe.
Despite their alpha's reassurances, however, Del could have cried when Austen stepped into the room. They needed to see for themself that it was true, that he was okay. And he was—he was thinner than they remembered, but he had the same scent and the same mop of curly red hair they so adored.
Austen hesitated when he drew near, obviously worried about hurting them or jostling them too much, but Del had no reservations. They were weak, and their legs and arms hurt with too much movement, but they didn't care. They wrapped Austen in as tight a hug as they could manage (which wasn't saying much) and closed their eyes, breathing in his scent and just holding him close.
Tears pricked at Del's eyes, but they didn't let them fall. This was a good moment, a soft reunion that Del wanted to hold on to. But they couldn't help but remember the people they wouldn't be reuniting with any time soon or ever. Nolan, dead and buried long before Del could even begin to mourn them. Katya, in hiding somewhere only Quinn knew. So many others had fled or been loss, and Del felt the waves of grief crashing over them in cascades, even as they held Austen. They were catching up on all of the grieving and emotions they had missed out on while being held by the Kindred, it seemed.
”Del! I’m so sorry. I know I went missing out of the blue, I wish I’d fought back more. And then when Quinn found me, you were gone. I missed you so much, I’m glad you’re back.”
"Shh, shh, it's okay," Del whispered, sniffling a little and letting go of Austen. A sad smile touched their lips and they smoothed a lock of unkempt auburn hair from his face, then leaned back. They winced as they relaxed back into the veritable mountain of pillows stacked up behind them. Everything still hurt, though day by day the pain got fractionally less. They had to hold on to that optimism. "I'm just glad you're okay. I know you were in good hands with Quinn, that he took care of you when I couldn't."

Surely someone will reach out a hand And show you a safe place to land As Austen reached gently to wrap Del in a hug, they grabbed onto him, pulling Austen into a tighter hug and holding him close for several seconds. Austen immediately felt more at ease in Del’s arms, like he’d come home from school to see his parent. They had both been through the world since that summer, but now they were finally back together. Austen knew there were still battles ahead, but he’d help Del get back on their feet as best he could. ”Shh, shh, it’s okay.”A few tears fell from Austen’s face as Del comforted them, feeling their hand smooth his hair just before Austen leaned back from his crouched position over the bed. Quinn had been putting on a good face, but Austen was smart enough to know that things with their pack were going poorly. Nolan was dead, Katya was gone and Austen had no idea what would happen next. He felt like the world and by extension, his pack, was splintering. But seeing Del put one important piece back together. ”I’m just glad you’re okay. I know you were in good hands with Quinn, that he took care of you when I couldn’t.””Yeah, Quinn’s been great,” Austen acknowledged, giving Del a little nod. ”He rescued me with some other wolves, it was so brave. But I’ve really missed you, I’m just so glad that you’re alive and I get to see you again.” Austen paused a moment, finding for a moment that he wished he didn’t have to go back to school. ”Del?” he asked after a short moment. There was a beat as Austen considered what he wanted to say, almost ashamed to admit the nice things he was longing for. Peace and quiet, an extended Christmas break perhaps. ”Can we find someplace quiet for Christmas? Maybe Quinn can come along too if he can get away. But I really just want to read books by the fire and bake cookies.” MADE BY VEL OF GS

“ ”Yeah, Quinn’s been great. He rescued me with some other wolves, it was so brave. But I’ve really missed you, I’m just so glad that you’re alive and I get to see you again.”
Del nodded. Quinn had filled them in on the basics of Austen's rescue, including Kai Lennox's sacrifice. Another death that would weigh on Del's soul for all their days. The world was quickly filling up with loss, one after another.
"I'm glad I'm alive, too," Del replied, attempting a joke and a little chuckle, but it ended up being little more than an exhalation of breath and a wince. Okay, not the best idea, they noted. There was little that didn't hurt to do, but just when Del thought they had learned their limits, they found something else that sent pain ricocheting through their thin frame. They could add laughing to that list too, apparently.
Instead, they reached out and took hold of Austen's hand. Their movements were clumsy, three splinted fingers keeping them from effectively holding his hand, but it was something. They gave his hand a gentle squeeze, or as much of a squeeze as they could manage.
”Del? Can we find someplace quiet for Christmas? Maybe Quinn can come along too if he can get away. But I really just want to read books by the fire and bake cookies.”
The request brought a smile to Del's face. It was such a simple thing, such an innocent request, but it filled their heart with warmth. After everything the two of them had been through in the past year, they deserved nothing less than a quiet holiday, away from the carnage of war and the tragedy of the world. "I think," They replied, looking down at the pair's joined hands. "That is a lovely idea. We can get out of the city, go somewhere quiet, just the two or three of us."
Somewhere in the back of their mind they wondered if they would be well enough to do any of that come Christmas, but they didn't voice those fears. It wouldn't do them any good to get ahead of themself, and they wanted to make sure Austen knew everything was okay.
